NIOSA — this used to be a favorite festival of mine, but it’s become too crowded too early. Tuesday’s used to be a good day to take the family, but by 6PM this year it was already crowded and way too packed by 7PM. I first attended in 1993 and it seems the area the festival uses has not changed much in 20 years, but the San Antonio population has grown a lot. It’s like putting a size 10 foot into size 8 show. The shoe still looks good from the outside, but you don’t your little piggies ot be the ones crammed inside. I would encourage the city to work with the NIOSA festival to expand the area to include part of Hemisfair Park. That would allow the crowd to be spread out a bit more. Perhaps move Clown Alley to the park and let the kids have more room to play the games. This year Clown Alley was crowded with a lot of adults, but few kids. My favorite food this year was steak on a stick. Tender, flavorful, and a nice spice to it. My favortite beer was Blue Moon.

For years I had heard about NIOSA and always wanted to go but for one reason or another I wasn’t able to attend. Well with this being my last year in San Antonio I decided DOIT! Make time for this Fiesta event and bring the kiddo with you. Due to scheduling conflicts, I ended up having to check it out on COLLEGENIGHT. oh yea… tons of drunk college kids dressed«to impress» in a dark humid limited amount of space. oh yea. rolling eyes. If I had known it was basically a huge lot with food & drink stands with the SAME types of food throughout the entire area I would have saved my $ 12 and parking fee! I mean it was alright, but they wouldn’t let me take my bitchin red wagon to tote my 4 year old, they don’t do military or student discounts, you have to use tickets to get to the food and drinks. I guess for some reason I assumed NIOSA = night in old san antonio I’d be seeing something historical about San Antonio, learning or seeing old architecture or art something along those lines and I clearly did not get the memo. Plus with college night going on, I got such mixed reactions from the youngsters for bringing my son from AWWW he’s the cutest coolest«college kid» to «why would someone bring a baby to NIOSA?!» my son is 4 years old… that’s not a baby. that’s a semi-fully functioning person who walks, talks, eats, and can even voice an opinion on crappy events.
