I was hoping that the new deli that opened up in Paletta’s location would go back to it’s roots. I ordered the Yankee sandwich, Soup, Tea & a cookie all of that for less than $ 8.50. I thought this place was headed in the right direction with fair prices. Then the food started to arrive. 1st was the soup creamy cheesy broccolli it was hot but not creamy or really cheesy. The soup had separated and was lacking in flavor. I went to add salt and pepper but the table clothed table had none. I finally found salt & pepper packets at the iced tea station. Wait a minute! table cloths on the tables yet no condiments on the table! Whoever thought that is a good idea should be shot. Next came the sandwich pastrami, corned beef, Swiss cheese, & brown mustard on swirled rye bread. This was not bad however I make a better sandwiches at home for my children. The bread was I guess toasted and the mustard tasty. The Pastrami, Corned Beef and Swiss cheese were the let down. It appeared to be pre-sliced and packaged meat and cheese like from the grocery store. Yuck! A deli sandwich should have fresh sliced meats. Last was the cookie, Chocolate Chip. Now this was tasty! it was deliciously overloaded with chips. My motto is the richer the better and it certainly was rich. Maybe the food will improve with time but I will wait awhile before I head back to see!

Dulcinea recently opened in the space at the corner of Recoleta and Jackson Keller that used to house the Italian grocery/deli Paletta’s — which besides being one of my favorite places was a SA icon and the only NY style ethnic grocery in SA. Dulcinea is a combination deli and catering operation — the main room that previously housed the grocery portion of Paletta’s is now a large open dining room — the décor is minimal and the tables seem a little too fancy for the setting with formal table cloths. A little art on the walls would go a long way towards making this space feel more comfortable. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to the table. The food was all tasty and pretty cheap — I got a turkey avocado sandwich with potato salad, a cup of soup, a cookie and an iced tea for a little over $ 8 before tip. This place just opened last month and you can tell it’s a little bit of a work in progress, but the food is good and it definately has potential…
