Hole in wall. Limited parking, run down look. Awesome food! Anybody who eats Mexican knows these are the best places to eat, not some ‘fine dining’ place. Stupid app wants a longer review, don’t really know what else to say so now I’m just writing whatever comes to mind in order to make this review long enough.

Loved the guisado and salsa! Definitely my favorite place for Mexican food in San Antonio.

If authentic, homemade at your abuelitas food is what you’re wanting look no further! Hands down the best taco spot in San Antonio. The tortillas are always fresh, and the carne guisada is to die for. It’s not the prettiest, most spacious place but who cares?! I come here for the FOOD& friendly hospitality of the staff. It’s cash only & the parking lot is awful but you can always find a spot down the side street.

I was very disappointed when I had lunch here today. They often do not have the full menu. I order the special and my food was cold. I only ate the crispy tacos left the rice and beans. The waitresses ignored us and I still tipped her. When I went to the counter to pay I told the owner about the food. She only charged me the tacos and full price at that and it was more money than the cost of the special. What a rip off. That is fine but I will not come here again. Also their parking lot is a nightmare, cars parking one behind the other and when someone is ready to leave the customer has to stop eating, go out and move their car. I’m so over it.

I’ve been eating tacos in this great city for over 30 years now, and coming to Cuco’s for the majority of that time. When people talk about finding hidden Mexican gems in a hole-in-the-wall, this is EXACTLY what they’re talking about. Nothing flashy here, just good food and cheap prices. The menu isn’t extensive, they got all the staples. But the carne guisada, chorizo and egg taco, barbacoa, menudo and enchiladas are nothing short of amazing. The tortillas, both flour and corn, are thick, moist and hot every time without fail. Now, with all of that said, a few things to keep in mind. They only accept cash, so don’t forget to stop by the ATM on the way. The staff doesn’t speak much English, and often none at all, so don’t expect to talk to your waitress about much other than ordering your food(unless you speak Spanish of course). The building is tiny, without a lot of seating, and weekends generally bring a large crowd. It’s anything but classy, so don’t expect candle lighting or a flower at your table. And I’m not sure of their hours, but I’m pretty sure they’re only open through lunchtime. Although some may see these things as negatives, I see them all as positives that only add to the appeal of the place. Cuco’s takes me back to the days of my youth when I’d eat at my friends’ houses and their abuelita(grandmother) would put something delicious together for us kids to eat there in the kitchen. Nostalgia at its best.

This is a small family owned restaurant that I have been going to since I was a wee lad. If you are craving great carne guisada then this is the place. The recipe has not changed in over 30 years(did I just say that?) I cannot give it five stars because it is cramped and you might come out smelling like Mexican food. Just looking out for my Mexican food novices out there. Anyway, the Big Red is cold and the tortillas are handmade. What else do you need?
