Sorta random to find a bagpiper in the midst of downtown, but this guy cranks it out for the tourists! He always hangs out right by the Torch of Friendship, but can be heard for blocks around. He can crank out the old favorites by request, or jam out on some new ones that he makes up on the spot. This guy gets five stars for jamming out downtown, instead of being my neighbor or something. I don’t quite get how this guy is promoting Scottish culture in the midst of so many other prevalent cultures in San Antonio, but good for him! Next time you see him downtown, I suggest you do a Scottish jig to keep him on target, and crank out those tunes!

Wow, I can’t believe you can leave a Unilocal review for a street performer. I was walking from my hotel towards the Riverwalk and thought it was rather strange that music from a bagpipe was playing a block away. It was a dark, warm night and here you hear something you’d never expect. I’ll have to give the guy a ton of credit for being so dedicated and good at what he does. The next night, here he was again blowing his pipes with his heart’s intent. I’m not sure when exactly the man comes out, but I can only speculate it is at night. Great music and it’s not annoying like drums or cymbals.

Here’s to you, Mr. Bagpipes-On-the-Riverwalk-Player (Mister Bagpipesontheriverwalk plaaaaa-ayh-ayher) Every night, you hang out under a bridge playing for tourists who just came from Rainforest Café. The juxtaposition of Irish and Scottish melodies in a city with Spanish heritage leaves them dumbfounded. (Honey, get the camera) Every cent you collect is a penny less for mariachis and the guy who sells glowsticks. (It’s burning a hole in my pocket) You can’t be bothered to give directions or history lessons. You are too busy keeping that steady bagpipe drone going. (Which way to the Marriot?) So crack open an ice cold Bud Light, Mr. Bagpipes-On-the-Riverwalk-Player. Because there’s no open container law on the Riverwalk. I miss the pipes right about now… First time I saw/heard him was wild, then I started listening for it. I remember a piper playing since ’98

listened to the bagpiper for about 15 – 20 waiting for a trolley near the Riverwalk. I was like Oh Cool! at first, but soon I realized that he was out of tune, doing the same music over and over and over and over again. I like to think he was doing his nightly practicing and hoping to get a few dollars on the side.

I am so glad that the bagpiper is being Unilocaled. Sometimes I wonder if it is just one person who does it every night. I think there may be a couple of them that switch off. But this person, whomever he is on any given night, is a signature sound to the Riverwalk. The night my husband asked me to marry me, we were right below the Torch and the bagpiper started playing. I took it as a sign of good fortune to have someone out there on a cold January evening — playing sweet sounds to our future!

As I was walking towards the riverwalk I heard a sound that was odd to my ears. It sounded strangely familiar to bagpipes… Why bagpiping in SA??? I really don’t know but it was cool! I ended up following my ears all the way to him. He was just below the The Torch of Friendship, which is the giant 65′ red tower given to SA by mexico. He was actually pretty talented and I ended up listening to him for a good 5 minutes while I gazed at the sculpture and space needle.
