A near-downtown staple since 1967, Antiquarian Book Mart is a small-on-the-outside, big-on-the-inside shop that specializes in books ranging from lightly used to ones published in 19th century London. Though Half Price Books is located next door, the items you can find at Antiquarian are extremely unique… many a rare find. Each book — hand-picked and individually read — reflects the owner’s careful effort to carry quality titles, particularly in these specialties: Literature, Humanities, Americana, Southwest Americana, Texas, and Military. The shop’s one to get lost in, browsing away for a good while. The owner is super chill and chatty. Having brought numerous books to the counter, and before finally deciding on Aldous Huxley’s The Perennial Philosophy, we talked no less than 15 minutes about the current state of the world, rather fittingly. Finally…(1) parking’s in the back, accessible by either driving on Avenue B or pulling through a narrow alley after turning off Broadway St;(2) the shop’s more cramped and stuffy than Half Price;(3) W.D. Deli next door is the perfect place to start reading your new find;(4) be mindful of occasional homeless people who may ask for a dollar or two — don’t casually linger in the parking lot!
