Breakaway Matcha teas are simply my favorite beverages on the planet. I’m partial to the smooth complexity of Blend 100, though all the blends are amazing. I tried them because of all the great health benefits, but the taste got me hooked. Plus, I really enjoy the ritual of making a gorgeous, frothy green warm cup every morning.
I’ve become a bit of a matcha nut. Many of the matchas out there are bitter, fishy, and flat. Not so for Breakaway Matcha. The blends taste like fresh grilled vegetables, and have complex umami layers.

I seek matcha wherever I can find it. The prices can range wildly as does the finesse of the taste. Am I fanatical about my tea? I guess so, maybe even obsessive. Ok definitely obsessive. Introduced to me by the folks at Benu, I figure this one of those places that would take the approach to matcha the way they do it in Japan. It’s not cheap but it definitely is amongst the best if you find yourself obsessing about flavor like I do.

I used to think that matcha was something you drink because it’s good for you, but Breakaway Matcha changed the game completely. It is creamy and delicious with just enough ceremony and none of the bitterness. What I like about matcha as opposed to coffee is that there is a sustained yet gentle boost of caffeine without the crash (and the bad breath) that coffee gives you. Eric is the master of matcha hands down.

After an intensive search Eric has sourced, from small-​yield Japanese tea farmers, quite possibly the highest quality matcha tea available worldwide — make no mistake this is a premium product and is priced accordingly. The tea is deliciously creamy, potent, and full of amino acids. Surprisingly it contains more antioxidants than pomegranate juice.
But the genius is he’s figured out how to prepare this phenomenal beverage in a no-​fuss and intensely flavorful manner. Clever advice such as using cheap milk frothers yield a crema on top of a shockingly vibrant green drink that may soon displace your daily cappuccino.
