I came to the Beachcomber bbq on the very strong recommendation of my bartender at the King and Prince resort. I normally only frequent Sothern Soul BBQ, but I was told beachcomber is better. I am on St Simons Island several times a year and the anticipation of world class dry smoked ribs is a constant daydream for the rest of the year. Smokeing my own ribs is an obsession of mine, so I know a little on the subject. What I received was actutually very undercooked spare ribs, hot, wet, with grease and a trace of blood. The meat did not pull off the boat at all, but needed to be scraped off with my teath. I tasted no spice. The smoke flavor was bitter and acrid from cold smoke. I watched the smoker, the flu was nearly closed and white thick smoke billowed out from the bottom of the smoker, so the acrid flavor should be expected. The coldslaw was plain, the baked beans also had little flavor. It all went in the garbage. They do have large, accessible garbage cans. I really wanted to love this place, but I am just left with a sick feeling. Don’t waist your TIME with this place, If you can get in the door, visit Sothern Soul BBQ, you will not be sick or dissapointed.

This is the type of fare and atmosphere that Carolinians are accustomed to. Step back to the beach trips of your youth. Enter the Comber in your flip-flops and order at the window. Take your Q and sit outside at one of their picnic tables. Yes, there will probably be a fly or two… but you’re at a barbecue joint… there won’t be linen table cloths. The beachcomber requires leaving pretentious opinions and your stressed out compatriots at home. The Q is solid slow smoked Q. I didn’t feel the need to sauce anything that I tried. That’s a huge plus… but again… something Carolinians are used to. The beans and slaw are also traditional expectations at a decent barbecue joint. Nothing here is a culinary masterpiece, it may have a few flies and an empty ice machine… but hey… that’s what I like about it here! Try: the pulled pork(tastes as it should) Avoid: dressing up

Much respect lost for Alton Brown… this place has either suffered an epic loss in quality or you seriously have to question his mental well being! Pork, brisket and chicken all consistently overlooked and incredibly dry. The Mac and cheese was simply Velveta and noodles. Packets of fake lemon juice for the tea. Ice machine with no ice… and most off-putting was that the dining area was overrun with flies!

Great Southern BBQ! This is where it’s at guys. You will not be disappointed at all. Had pulled pork, beans, and slaw. Sauces where more on the sweet side. However this is not a deal breaker. Good food.

UPDATE: Burgers are good! Bar is chill spot to hang out and drink late at night. Interesting atmosphere. Mixed feelings. Nice employees Overpriced, decent at best, nothing special, pork doesn’t taste smoked, bbq sauce tastes like KC Master piece, out of mac n cheese… etc. paid $ 30 for 3 sandwiches, 2 sides and 1 drink. Sorry, but Southern Soul was amazing…

Average beach food. Pork was okay. Not all its hyped up to be. Southern Souls is better if you’re on the island.

Loved the island theme, outdoor seating with BBQ smoker out front, and laid back servers. unfortunately the only item on my plate of brisket, pork, and mac and cheese and fried okra that was close to being warm was the okra. Tasted like leftovers that had been nuked for a minute. Go to Southern Soul…

Worst experience ever! My daughter was seriously injured on their unsafe fans without covers and they laughed as she bled and cried. Doesnt matter what the food tastes like, this place is nightmare!

We initially came up for the Shrimp & Grits Festival on Jekyll Island, however, a BBQ Quest filled the first part of our day. I had a couple places bookmarked from Food Network that I’ve wanted to try for a while. Beachcomber was our first stop. Knowing we were going to be sampling a few menus, we had to be wise with our order. We decided to split the Supreme: 2 meats, 2 sides & Texas Toast. I got the pulled pork, Mr. Uncorked went for the ribs. For his two sides he went with Brunswick stew & the beans. I get the sides at the next stop. The pulled pork was delicious. Moist, but just pure pork. Not swimming in sauce or juice. I piled it high on the toast and made myself an open faced sandwich with a mix of the hot & sweet sauces on the table. For details on the ribs, you’ll have to wait until Mr. Uncorked reviews them. He’s found his voice again. As for atmosphere, Beachcomber is exactly what I would conjure up when trying to imagine a BBQ shack near the beach. The smoke is real and not just a façade like some other(now closed) places we’ve tried in GA.

Great little place near the beach. Great bbq, great homemade sauce, great kichen crew. Thanks
