If Unilocal had a 10-​star rating, I’d give Matt Kotefka at First Choice DJ Service 15 stars. Here’s why he gets top ratings.
I needed a DJ for my 20^th anniversary party, and I had no clue where to even get started looking. Quite by accident, I discovered GigMasters, where you’re able to find all kinds of vendors for events. You can even get free quotes from vendors.
At the same time, I also placed an ad on Craigslist for DJ services. Let me tell you, you get a wide range of ‘professionals’, from those who are to those who are not. And that’s what was scary about trying to find a DJ and a photographer. I didn’t want a nightmare situation where we’d wind up on Judge Judy.
So I narrowed down my search to a handful of vendors, and after email exchanges, I ‘interviewed’ each over the phone. That was the one of the wisest things I did and I would pass that on as a tip. I asked specific questions of each to gauge their experience level and that was telling.
Because I had very specific music I wanted played that spanned 20 years (and then some!) and because I had PowerPoints timed with some of the songs, I was one of ‘those’ customers. I had narrowed down my choices to two DJs, but Matt won because of his personality.
Matt’s easy-​going nature and sense of humor is so similar to mine, he played the perfect straight-​man to my corny jokes. And even though I had every song planned out, I trusted Matt enough to go with his recommendations to move around the order of some of my songs.
Matt was concerned that due to some of my music choices, some people wouldn’t dance. I told him due to the age group, and the fact that I didn’t care if anyone danced, because I was going to dance alone if I wanted to (and did), it didn’t bother me. But being the expert and knowing his business, he moved around some of my music choices so that there was more dancing that not.
It’s been two weeks after the party, and I still have family and friends talking about it. Many have asked for the spreadsheets I created to help Matt and me plan the flow of songs. And everyone has said they loved the back-​and-​forth banter Matt and I had throughout the night.
I know I made the right choice going with First Choice Entertainment. In my mind, they were the ONLY choice! Thanks Matt for making our party memorable.
