OK, I have been to a Charley’s twice. Once at the airport. Once here at the Maplewood Mall. I was at the airport waiting for a flight out of this town for a few days. Being it was work related travel, I was entitled to a lunch. I looked around and saw this place. I do not remember what my other options were nearby. A Philly Cheese sounded very good to me. Charley’s it is. Service was quick. Fries were too hot as delivered. Sandwich was too. So had to wait a few minutes for all to cool down to a comfortable eating temperature. At least I had a properly cooled beverage to enjoy while I wait for my sandwich and fries to cool off. The sandwich was very good. I didn’t die and go to heaven, but it was a very tasty sandwich. Nice thin sliced/chopped beef on a fresh roll with cheese/onions/peppers/mushrooms. Gotta get all the extras. Came to around $ 11.00. Boss questioned why I had to get lunch on my way out of town. Simply told him, it was lunch time, I was waiting for my flight and I WASHUNGRY. My expense sheet was not denied because of this lunch purchase, but I thought he was a dink for even questioning it. Fast forward a few months. I was wanting a Philly again. I looked up this place and found they had a store at the mall. I like going to the mall as much as a woman likes giving birth. She, may come out happy, but it is a painful experience. Same with me on going to a mall. I might not like going there, but hopefully I will be happy coming out. I did not come out happy on this visit. The sandwich had an off flavor that did not appeal to me. I was not able to determine what the«off flavor» was. I didn’t throw it out, but did not enjoy it either. One thing I find interesting about this place. This operation was started in the mid 80’s. So was Jimmy John’s. Though they started in different states, both started on or near a college campus. I do not understand how college students can afford this type of meal so much that 2 places can get off the ground to become successful businesses. I guess students of the 80’s had more disposable income than those of us who were students in the 70’s or before. I will return to the airport location. But I have no plans for travel anytime soon. So it may be a while. In the mean time, I found a very small sandwich shop nearby that offers a philly cheese. So small, it is take out only. Now that I have been writing/thinking about a philly cheese, I think I need a philly cheese in a few minutes.

I love Charlie’s so much I would give them a 10 if I could. I go here at least twice a week and could almost go here daily! They service is very quick which makes it a very good choice for my lunch hour. The owners are also very nice and when they were not carrying banana peppers the owner went to the grocery store and got them just for people like me who love them!

One of the best sub places(ya I know its a chain restaraunt but its great).Order the philly steak sub with sauted mushrooms and onions and have them put tomato, lettuce, mayo, and chipotle sauce on it. Ii is great, they also put your sandwich bun on the grill with butter for a few seconds and its wonderful. The ingredients on the sandwich are fresh and its a nice change to have the option of getting fries at a sandwich place versus chips.

This wasn’t that bad. First time I ate here was great. but my second visit wasn’t so much. probably because it was a different cook. but the grilled subs are pretty good. and the cheesy fries.
