Purchased 2 Bone in Prime ribs from here one on ¹²⁄₂₀ (14 lbs) and one for ¹²⁄₂₅ (18 lbs) Both where wonderful ! If you want great meat… buy it here! They cut the bones and tied them back on per instructions

I’ve been here a couple time since I discovered it was hiding behind the other shops. I have gotten the meatloaf (LOVED), the parmesan garlic pork chops (they weren’t bad, but not for me) and various steaks (great cuts!). I have not gotten any of the frozen soups or meals, I am sure I’ll get those in the winter. Hoping the Italian beef is good!
But let me go back to that meatloaf for a second. I make a pretty good meatloaf myself. Hubby’s never complained, it’s always full of flavor and juicy. I usually spend about as much on meat as I did on the already prepared meatloaf. This meatloaf was amazing! I don’t know what they put into it, but it was delicious, tender, juicy, not greasy, flavorful, like actual savory meat, not over seasoned flavor. So good!
I’ve also gotten the jerky, decent price compared to other places. Cajun is my fav so far.
My only meh about the place and I didn’t take a star away for this b/​c honestly I go to a butcher shop for the meat, not for the frozen pierogi or pastas, but their prices for those were a couple dollars more than I’ve seen at other small grocery stores or butcher shops. That was disappointing since it is nice to have a one stop shop for dinner if you need a whole meal.

Can never get the kids there to wait on you if the boss isn’t there… won’t be going back anytime soon.

Im so sad to say that something must have changed in the last year or two… its very hit or miss now. I still shop here on rare occasion but dont find the quality or freshness to be the same as it used to be… i even once bought rancid smelling chicken from here which was wrapped up for me BY THE MANAGER ON DUTY… HOW COULD HE HAVE NOT SMELLED THAT? Turns out, they were having problems with their cooler for a couple days but when i bought the rancid chicken back to them, the same manager was selling other customers chicken from the same cooler =/​i tend to come here more in the summer when the turnover is high and ONLY if the meat in the coolers looks fresh. so sad

Before Unilocal or any social media, you could ask anyone in Lake County, IN where the best place to buy steaks and they would tell you to go to stop and shop in St. John.
A family owned business since… well, way before I was born, they have been serving the community with good eats and friendly smiles.
I went in to buy some steaks a few weeks ago and just like in the old days — they were great.
Even though Ed Welch can’t hit a fast ball high and inside, when it comes to meat, Welch’s Stop and Shop hits it out of the park.

We used to go here all the time, but the quality has gone down hill. Their ground beef is a good example. The fat content has definitely went up. I can barely make a burger on the grill without having a huge amount of flare ups. Also the potato salad used to really good now it is about the same as the market across the street. We now buy our meat and salads somewhere else.

Love this place. Delicious high quality fresh foods. Friendly staff who seem appreciative of your business and are willing to help. A great local place that you want to support!

awesome mom and pop kind of place… great quality meats and prepared foods. extreemly friendly folks… the best of the best… I just wish their prices were a bit less. I know good quality demands a higher price… but sometimes I think they could do just a bit better.

Stopped in here about a week ago, and was HIGHLY impressed! I knew I found a hidden gem for meats and specialty items. They had some pretty nice dry pasta that I’ve been looking to try. (That I haven’t been able to find in the BIG supermarkets.)
I’m tired of the BIG markets not offering items I need to make a recipe, and find small shops like this carry what I need. We need to support our small business owners so they continue operating in our communities!

Just to add to Jackie’s thorough review — they offer smoked barbecue ribs on the weekends (not sure if it’s just in the summer). These are the best ribs in the region, and so far, any place I’ve had ribs (sorry, Memphis — I just wasn’t impressed). Any of their in-​house bread/​rolls are great too.
4 stars instead of 5, because I think they’re just a bit too pricey. This is one of those «mom & pop» places where the extra price can be overlooked on account of the quality.

This place is consistently voted best of the Region – with good reason!
My fiancée calls this place a meat emporium… It’s all that and more. We come here on weekend when we plan to grill for our cuts of meat. I’ve had regular and stuffed pork chops (delicious), baby back ribs, ribeye steaks, hademade sausages/​brats, and their marinated chicken (southwest is my fav). All are definite winners. Not a bad cut of meat in the place!
They also sell frozen packaged meals, like pulled pork, italian beef, etc. Made there, all you have to do is bring it home and heat it up. Convenient and great value for the prices. They also bring in homemade peroghies from some place in Whiting (home of Peroghi Fest)…Try the spinach and cheese!
I could go on and on… They have meat sticks and beef jerkey too. So flavorful, so fresh! Addictive! All of the employees actually seem happy to work there too! It gets crowded in the summer, but their staff are quick, so don’t be turned off by the crowds.
This is genuinely one-​stop shopping. You can get produce, spices, condiments, desserts, side dishes and salads (separate counter), snacks, and the main course! They also stock soda and juice – If you’re a drinker there’s a liquor store in the same strip mall.
This is your friendly neighborhood butcher shop times 100! Truly the best in the Region!
