Sooooo while I knew there’s history behind the name; for me this review is simply about the sheer pleasure I have with crossing this bridge & others like it. For me, bridges have literal & figurative significance. Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with the details; I will however mention the outstanding view of the #MuddyMississippi that can be seen once you’re at its apex. When I learned of its existence, it’s been on my #BucketList(in the local section) of things to do. I’ve been longing to cross this bridge for about 10 years; we’ll before Hurricane Katrina. Soooooooo I can scratch that one off… It was all that I thought it’d be.

This is one of several cantilever bridges we in Louisiana use to cross the mighty Mississippi… This bridge connects the western half of Ascension Parish(Donaldsonville) to the eastern half(Gonzales) along with allowing travel to Baton Rouge via I-10 once one is on the east bank… Built in 1964 during the administration of The Singing Governor, Jimmie Davis. From opening until 2001 a toll was charged to go from east to west on the bridge. It was given the derogatory name of The Sunshine Bridge by the governor’s critics in reference to the famous song«You Are My Sunshine» which was written/sung by Gov. Davis. I guess the governor gets the last laugh cause the name stuck and if one knows their LA history crossing this bridge always brings that childhood song to mind. As an aside Governor Davis, based in large part on that song, is a member of both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame… Betcha didn’t think you’d get a history lesson reading a review about a bridge didja?
