5 for décor: millionaire farmer country-casual with a sophisticated urban edge. 5 for comfy design(rare in the Bay Area): spacious aisles, wonderful chairs, big tables. 4 for food; 5 for value. How so? Quality food, but concept doesn’t always come off; Solbar(their flagship restaurant) is better overall. Corned beef hash: only a few lonely Brussels sprouts leaves, but housemade corned beef was outstanding. But the cutting of beef and potatoes went overboard, from coarse to sloppy — needs more care in knifework. Even if you’re going to do a coarse-chopped hash, that still means DICING, not SLICING. Eggs poached perfectly, yolks provided some much-needed moisture(there were no veggies sauteed in the hash at all, not even onions; a serious mistake). Just a little tweaking would make this a straight 5 star dish. Norwegian Eggs are a smoked salmon benedict, and outstanding. Best housemade lox we’ve had since the Ritz-Carlton when it was still under chef Ron Siegel. Coffee was press-pot, good blend, properly made. Cinnamon bun, supposedly much heralded, was awful. I have no idea why Californians are so enamored of leaden, heavy, dreary buns. Why? Breakfast buns should be light as air, soft and pillowy. There is no way to make them healthy and good for you, so why not just make the best, lightest, most delicate sweet bun possible? Menu is short, so be sure to check the web for dishes that will please you(and your dining companions). We prefer quality to quantity, so would rather a restaurant offer a few high quality choices than a wide variety of schlock.

There are quite a bit of places that serve lunch in the Valley. Some places also do brunch, this is one of them and it’s quite good. The signature dish here is their Blueberry Pancakes, and that did not disappoint. It was fluffy and soft. If there is only one thing I could get here, that is what I would get. We also tried the Crab Poh boy and the Norwegian Egg Florentine, both of which was good to decent. The salmon on the Egg Florentine was a bit too salty for me. They did get their English Muffin from The Model Bakery down the street, which is a plus. Overall the atmosphere here is charming and unique, where people sit on couches and tables are more communal then other places. I wools come back here again. Parking is street only so I would recommend get here a bit early to find parking.

I had a great time at Archetype. For an upscale Napa Valley place I’d say this is a pretty good value, too. I would definitely recommend to others, and plan to be back! I visited with my sister last Friday around noon. We had no problem getting seated(we chose the bar). Even on a relatively off day the place was about half-full when we left. The service was excellent. Lots of attention from the bartender and other staff. Interior’s quite impressive. There’s lots of fun stuff to look at and the kitchen’s exposed to the restaurant. I ordered a burger and fries, my sister got an omelette. We were both impressed with the dishes, and the prices were reasonable (relative to the area). The wine, booze, and beer selections were great. A lot of folks were ordering their take on a Bloody Mary. My sister opted for a spicy tequila cocktail that was pretty refreshing.

Being a local, I hear so many great things about Archetype and it falls flat for us every time. I’ve tried it just about every 8 – 9 months thinking it will get better and it just doesn’t. The ambiance is dialed in, but the service and the brunch menu is eclectic. Service was sporadic. It was a long time between seating us and offering specials, then he disappeared when we were all done. Wish the service was much better with a menu that had a good choice of basic brunch entrees, kids options along with their own menu items. Had the chicken and waffles special and it definitely made up for the service. Would recommend. Donut holes were an awesome starter course.

Love love love this place. Our favorite restaurant in Napa Valley which is saying a lot because of all the amazing food choices. We particularly love the decoration and vibe !! Howard Backen’s architecture is superb! We were here with a party of 8 and covered most of the dishes on the menu. From the delicious tuna tartare to the blue crab appetizers to fall off the bone short ribs with grits is was all fabulous. One tip– leave room for dessert!!! Enjoy an amazing restaurant experience.

I had to give Archetype a try after hearing one of my favorite bloggers, Gal Meets Glam, rave about it several times. We had reservations after a tour at Newton which ran long. Staff was great about working with us to adjust our reservations. We ate right next to the big gorgeous windows that light the whole beautiful white restaurant. A pleasant fire crackled next to us and I enjoyed resting on the big pillows on our bench seat. The food was delicious. I had to order the waffle with duck confit & a side of grits because that is pretty much all of my favorite foods in one plate. My husband enjoyed the special that day. It was a bacon cheeseburger with an egg served on an English muffin from the nearby Model Bakery. Luckily for me, the burger was huge! I enjoyed as much of it as I could sneak off of his plate. That was the most incredible English muffin I’ve ever had. It really gave a great flavor to the burger. Next time I am looking forward to ordering the donut holes & lemon pancakes!

I highly recommend this place for brunch! It’s a gorgeous restaurant with high ceilings, big windows, and a quintessentially Napa-dressed crowd. The Norwegian eggs were delicious and ordered by half my table but my favorite dish was the side of cheese grits, which had a surprisingly light and fluffy texture. The pink mimosa with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice was delightful as well.

Outstanding! The décor is just perfect for breakfast and Napa, from the inside to the sun room. And the food was outstanding. If we lived there, this might be our Saturday morning routine! If you are looking to eat in St Helena, then you need to try this! Duck confit waffle — YES Beenie Weenies — YES Cheddar biscuits — a must! Corned beef short rib hash — that is a winner!

Let’s start by saying the Decour and feel of the restaurant is outstanding. Went with friends we all tried something different and was not disappointed the chicken and dumplings is my favorite I do feel that the short rib needed a lot more mole sauce… The artichoke was fabulous and the dipping béarnaise sauce was my favorite I have have had a lot of pork belly and there’s goes to the top of the list. Our waiter was great with dealing with three women that had been drinking wine all day BAHAAHAHAH Will definitely be making this a stop whenever I’m in the area

Food and service were superb. Everything was cooked perfectly and plated like a piece of art. The chicken and dumplings dish and the duck were the highlights of dinner. We’ve also eaten here for brunch and the meal was also very good. This place is a great example of top notch cuisine in Napa Valley. Atmosphere was classy but not pretentious. Highly recommended.

I had bookmarked this place and finally got to go this weekend for dinner. I would still like to try their brunch because this place is really awesome. Items ordered: Artichoke dip — very fresh and the dip was awesome Foie gras — amazing presentation and very savory Pork belly — moist and juicy, very flavorful Chicken and potato dumplings — best chicken i’ve had in years. skin was crispy and meat was very tender and juicy. the dumplings were pillows of delight. I LOVED this dish NO corkage fee. I repeat, no corkage fee. Food was reasonably priced and worth the money. I have become a very huge critic of places that charge over-priced bland food and Archetype is not one of those places. Loved the décor of the place as well. Service was excellent and comforting. Very happy I got to try this place and I am very much looking forward to going back whenever I am in the St Helena area.

After finding that Farmstead had closed their patio on the night we went(we had a big friendly dog with us) we came across this gem on Unilocal. The initial draw was the gorgeous patio/sunroom? that was easily one of the nicest accommodations for dog friendly dining I’ve seen. The area was well lit, warm(with a fireplace and plenty of heaters) and comfortable(decked out with loads of pillows) so it didn’t even feel like we were outside. Very nice after a day of hiking! Service was superb with just the right amount of friendly check-in’s. The food was amazing and reasonably priced for the quality you get. I got the scallops with the sweet potato fries, A+. Fun side note: This place has the best tater tots you’ll ever have. It’s about $ 7 for the sour cream and onion dip with tater tots, or you can splurge and for $ 110 get it with caviar.

AMAZING brunch spot. The food here was excellent, and better than a dinner at a Michelin start restaurant in Yountville that shall remain nameless. I had the broccoli and ham omelet, which was fluffy and delicious, and it came with potatoes with some Epic hot creamy sauce(chimichurri?). My wife had the ‘Beany weany’ which was amazing churizo sausage with chilaquiles, and once again, an amazing white citrus sauce. It is a little pricy, but well worth it. The bar looked really cool, and the ambiance is great with multiple fire places, an atrium, and very high ceilings. My favorite breakfast spot it all of the Napa Vally by far. Check it out!

Came here with the boyfriend on a drizzly morning for brunch. Thankfully we were seated in the front entry area instead of the back restaurant, because there was bright natural light and cozy with heaters(under the seats!) whereas the dining area inside was quite dark. Coffee: was actually really good, from Sonoma. Very chocolate-y and less acidic which I prefer. Corned beef hash: the potatoes were super crispy and delicious(possibly fried in lard, no wonder it tastes so good). I normally don’t like potatoes, but I liked these. The corned beef was not overly salty as most are and was very tender. Definitely a popular dish for a reason! Lemon ricotta pancakes: we got the half stack and it was plenty. They are smaller pancakes, about the size of a sand dollar. The almond butter doesn’t add much, but everything tastes light and fluffy, and the lemon and blueberry brings the whole dish together. TLDR: sit in the front area and get corned beef hash and lemon ricotta pancakes!

Perfect place for food porn pics. Everything about this restaurant screams classy, fresh, «cool», and delicious. White(or I guess cream?) themed, with a gorgeous patio out front, equipped with heaters for those rainy days. Much ambiance. So brunch. I tried the lemon ricotta pancakes and orange glaze cinnamon rolls. Umm. Yum. I hate to say that the cinnamon roll was better than pancakes, but regardless, both are fabulous. Also a prime location– once you’re done with your meal you can walk around downtown and enjoy the day. We started our wine tasting trip here, and all the carbs were perfect for prepping our bodies for massive wine consumption. Highly recommended.

Made this our brunch stop for our day of vineyard hoping. The restaurant is on a busy Main Street next to a lot of other restaurant in St. helena, but I was glad I picked this place for its comfy seating and interiors. Walls featured different home goods and crafts made in the area. The patio looked like a good option on a nice day. I went a la carte here and just ordered the grits, biscuits and gravy, and doughnuts to share with the table. Every one else chose entrees and we’re all happy with their orders. Our table had everything from the blueberry pancakes(little baby pancakes), short rib hash with Brussel sprouts, the burger, chorizo chaliquiles, and the fish and chips. Food here is definitely filling or at least what we ordered was and it definitely sobered us all up. Although they do have a good cocktail menu if you don’t want to sober up. Service was good.

Wandering around Napa while hunting for wedding venues, we stumbled upon this and decided to check it out. This was before the Michelin hype(yes I have a backlog/notes on restaurants I need to review…) and a coworker had recommended it to me. I almost didn’t head in because their establishment looks too fancy for a simple weekend lunch, but the mister liked the architecture and insisted that we dine here. I’m glad I did end up eating here. The atmosphere is way more casual than it looks outside, and the waitstaff was friendly and offered us suggestions from the menu. We shared some lettuce cups, a delightful peach and cream salad, and a cannolo. The savory dishes were so very good. The peach and cream salad was hands down the best salad I’ve eaten — it was so delicious we even raved about it to the waiter multiple times. This dish has me dreaming about it and I’ll so travel for it. As for the cannolo. well it was decent and satisfied the mister’s sweet tooth. But everyone who has been to Mike’s in Boston knows there is simply no competition, nuh-uh. However, that’s hard to live up to so I’m letting it pass.

Very awesome brunch place just a little north of Napa! Reservations recommended as this place can get pretty popping and seats fill up fast. PARKING: Free 3 hour street parking! RESERVATIONS: My boyfriend and I came here for a New Year’s Day Brunch(we made reservations) and it was great! We made reservations for 12pm and were seated when we arrived. They had New Year’s party favors(hats and things) to celebrate as well! Not sure how the wait would be on a normal day. SEATING: Indoor and outdoor seating available. We were seated«outdoors» which is still enclosed in a greenhouse looking setting with heaters as well. It wasn’t too cold sitting outside and they have a nice, small, cozy fireplace that is shared out to the street. Outdoor seating was comfortable, indoor seating looked cool! Would probably opt to made a note for indoor seating on our next reservation. MENU: When you come for breakfast or lunch, it’s always brunch! Their brunch menu has both«morning» and«afternoon» dishes depending on what you’re feeling. My boyfriend had the corned beef hash and I opted for the Norwegian Eggs(basically a smoked salmon benedict). Both choices were great! The corned beef hash was a little heavier(with potatoes) and the Norwegian Eggs a little lighter(dill hollandaise sauce was great!) Looking at the other reviews/pictures, I’m going to say that the menu changes every so often. We’ll be back to try some of the other stuff! Cute, quaint little place. Close by to some great wineries too!(near Calistoga, etc.)

My wife and I decided to stay in wine country for a few nights on our way back up to Oregon from Southern California, primarily to visit with some close friends that live there. We made a reservation for a dinner at Archetype on New Year’s Eve, after a day of wine-tasting and catching up with these long-time friends. We’d made the reservation more than three weeks prior to the holiday, and were excited to spend the night there, since it is the only local restaurant that none of us have been to. We even considered trying the brunch and dinner both in one trip! There’s a regular turnover for restaurants in the valley and if you grew up here, or come here often, you become acquainted with all of them. We were looking forward to becoming acquainted with Archetype. Unfortunately, we wouldn’t be given that opportunity on New Year’s Eve… In short, they were ill-prepared and unprofessional, even condescending at points-sufficient to ruin a holiday. When my friends and I arrived at Archetype on NYE, the place was rather empty, save for a couple of populated areas inside and several tabes quietly enjoying the sparse but warm ambience. The four of us were seated in the covered patio area, after a moment, and each given a one-page menu. We were immediately disheartened. You see, we are familiar with pre-fixe menus and special holiday arrangements, but we were under the impression that it was business as usual at Archetype this evening. It was their standard menu that we had looked forward to and we had actively checked for the possibility of a pre-fixe! Again, we had made our reservations several weeks prior and had checked the web-site several times, in the days preceding our visit and on the day-of even. Further, we tried calling the restaurant on several occasions but were always given an automated message(referring one to OpenTable) or simply not picked up at all. This in-itself was striking as unprofessional. The $ 70 per person pre-fixe certainly looked fine content-wise, but it wasn’t what we had expected nor what we would have ordered, if given the choice. We’ve done plenty of pre-fixe meals before, but this one simply didn’t deliver. My wife, being pregnant, couldn’t(or didn’t want to) consume half of what was offered. A friend with culinary sensitivities was equally turned off. After speaking with a couple of servers, a manager was sent over to «see what could be done.» The manager’s suggestion? He advised us to order two meals instead of four, that way the two couples could share. Implicit in his recommendation was the impression that we were offended because we couldn’t afford or were put off by the price alone. This was of-course condescending and offensive, but somewhat typical of this manager’s style, as we would soon discover. He offered to call other establishments to «get us in.» This was pure hyperbole of course, as he couldn’t get anyone into anywhere. Mentioning the other eateries we had in mind, he confirmed that it was impossible to get-in. Did he think we wanted to downgrade? At no point were we greeted as guests should be, especially on a holiday such as New Year’s Eve. We actually felt condescended to. The possibility that we didn’t like the menu offered was simply not considered. Walking out of the restaurant, the hostess actually had the impertinence to say, «I’m sorry you couldn’t warm-up to us,» perfectly punctuating our experience at Archetype. Of course, in truth, it the other way around, and I’m sorry Archetype couldn’t warm up to us.

The atmosphere is adorable and all of the employees are clearly well educated in the food. The tuna tartare was really good and the crab cake was alright. The signature cocktails are intricate and very aromatic. A bit too aromatic for my tastes but still worth a try. My party ordered the short rib, trout, and lamb as entries. The Short rib was alright. The meat was very tender but not as flavorful as expected. The collar greens were a bit heavy with the vinegar flavor for my tastes. The potato it came with was nice and crispy and helps mellow out the flavor of the collar greens. The trout was by far my favorite dish. The sauce was delicious and creamy. The mustard flavor was subtle but went well with the fish. There were soft type of fried chips around the side that were nice too. The Lamb was nice and tender with a sweet start but savory ending. The meat wasn’t dry but also wasn’t as juicy as I expected. We decided to opt out on desert because the entrees were far more filling than expected(dishes larger than as appear in pictures). Would definitely come here again.

Stopped here twice after a Napa trip for dinner. The place is really nice and the food is great! Next time, I hope to try the brunch. Liberty Farms Duck Breast — cooked really well. Not overcooked like how most places do. Chicken & Potato Dumplings — that chicken was so moist! Slicing through w/a knife made a clean cut. The skin on top was extra crispy. The potato dumplings was smothered in a creamy sauce. It exuded the usual comfort of chicken and dumplings, but had a very refined, organized presentation to it. Kennebec Fries — these come out really hot, so wait a bit. Otherwise, hits just the spot as a side.

Very nice brunch place right in downtown St. Helena! We came here for brunch on the way home from a nice weekend in Calistoga. We were lucky to find street parking in front of the restaurant! The restaurant is brightly lit, both inside and outside. It’s like eating lunch at a garden. Shrimp and grits was a good-sized dish with grilled shrimp that were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Grits had some sweet corn mixed in and was creamy and good, in a rich way. Babyback rib sandwich was a nice riff on Peking Duck, with a gigantic soft bun and hoisin-glazed pork rib meat and some pickled veggies. Very decadent and balanced in meat: veggie:sauce:bread ratio. Their side of pork belly fried rice was excellent as well! For dessert we shared their half stack of lemon ricotta pancakes with blueberry syrup and almond butter. Soft, fluffy, and sweet! Best to eat by cutting vertically and eating stacks as opposed to individual cakes. All three dishes we ordered were excellent! I would normally rate 5 stars on such great dishes but will deduct a star for somewhat slow food service and the lemongrass soda which tasted more like a sour lemonade and wasn’t too special. Still, I’d come back here in a heartbeat to sample their dinner menu.

In terms of ambiance this place gets an A+, tons of natural light and light furnishings make you feel like you are inside of a Pottery Barn. The open kitchen brings the restaurant to center and adds to the appeal. Their items are quite expensive(welcome to Napa Valley!) (probably some of the most expensive mimosas that I’ve ever had) but their dishes really do speak to freshness and quality of cuisine: — Pink Mimosa: fresh grapefruit juice really drives the crispness of this mimosa, on the expensive side — Maple Sugared Donuts with Butter Pecan Sauce: SO worth it, definitely order as a side for the table — the donuts are cooked to perfection(crispy on the outside and nice and soft on the inside)… butter pecan sauce isn’t overwhelmingly sweet — Duck Confit and Buttermilk Waffle: though I wish the waffle had been crispier and the egg a little less well done, the Duck brought it all together — cooked to perfection, the syrup of the pancake actually gave it a nice contrast Service was excellent. Someday would really love to have a private party in their beautiful outdoor patio area.

Super cute place! We walked in and got immediately seated(though half an hour early for our reservation). Service is a bit slow… but the food is delicious! We used the check in on Unilocal to get a free plate of maple sugar donuts(super delicious with a vanilla bean sauce), duck confit buttermilk waffle that was toasted to the perfect crisp, half stack of ricotta pancakes that were smaller than your usual pancake but salivating, and a Cuban sandwich that was just so so(but maybe cz I’m not a huge fan of pickles). Side note: though service was slow, our waiter was very sweet! We asked for a recommendation of wineries to go to around the area, and he wrote us a large list and gave us tips!

Amazing service. Amazing food. Amazing drinks. Amazing architecture! Boy am I lucky to have a foodie bf who knows just the spots to make reservations for us when we’re out of town. This restaurant is simply divine. I absolutely loved the interior design of this place. But we’re not here just to admire the furniture pieces are we? Hellz no. We foodies and we gotta talk about dat grub! Things I swallowed that were amazing: –The Scala: Jalapeño Infused Tequila, Lemongrass Syrup, Domaine de Canton, Lime Juice(this drink is one of my top fave tequila cocktails now) –Kennebec Fries w/Meyer Lemon Aioli(fries are perfectly crisped!) -(Vegetarian Pesto Pasta Dish — I forgot the name! The pasta was handmade fettuccine and completely doused in this amazing pine nut pesto sauce. The best part of this dish were the sun chokes and green peas for sure.) I tasted some of the bf’s American Mule as well as his Oven Roasted Petaluma Chicken which was sooo bomb! That chicken was super crispy and juicy! This is a MUST go-to if you ever dine in Saint Helena. But remember, make reservations. I’m sure this place gets just as packed on weeknights as they do on weekends.
