Great Lowlander food, had the shrimp burger, fried shrimp, flounder sandwich, sweet potato fries and homemade southern sweet tea, Great place for lunch, nothing fancy, great food and friendly service. Highly recommended

Went there, ate the food, bought the T-shirt. Husband went 2 days in a row, and said the shrimp burger was beautiful. A dive, that felt like it was made for fisherman. He loved that atmosphere. Grandparents recommended it as a favorite of each of their 6 sons, and all the guests who visit them.

We hit the shrimp shack after a beautiful visit to hunting island! !! Amazingly at 1pm there was no wait to order. The woman behind the counter was very helpful and assisted us through the menu. The bf ordered the fried bonanza. Fried shrimp which came with 2 hush puppies and 2 sides… he chose Cole slaw and onion rings. He loved the shrimp and really liked the Cole slaw. The onion rings were only 4 in number and good. Hush puppies probably got him as too much grease because that was the only thing left. I can’t do that much grease, so opted for the shrimp salad on lettuce with tomato and crackers, but with an added side of sweet potato fries. The shrimp salad was fresh and very good. The sweet potato fries were also fresh, but just a bit soggy. We wish that we had room to try the pecan pie or key lime pie, but maybe next time.

We stopped here on the way back from Hunting Island because of all the great reviews. We love trying new, local restaurants so we gave it a shot. My husband and I had the shrimp burgers. Thin patty on very thick bun. My dad had the fried shrimp. He said it was ok. Hush puppies were average. Stop if you’re starving after a day on the beach. The atmosphere is charming, but just about everything is fried. If that’s not your thing, you may want to keep driving.

Honestly, if I could give this no stars, I would. I ordered the flounder sandwich, there was more skin than fish. I didn’t know they cut flounder that thin. I haven’t been to a place that bad in a while. It was a whole other level of sloppy. I never thought I’d write a Unilocal review that was so critical yet so accurate.

Great shrimp platter. Shared the meal. Loved the shrimp creole soup. Service fast and friendly. No frills restaurant with very sticky wooden chairs.

It is what it is. This is truly a shack. We ventured here as there are numerous to do lists that recommend it. They do NOT take credit card so remember to bring CASH! There is also no air conditioning but they had more seating than you would expect. They fried shrimp, fried fish, fried hush puppies, fried… fried…fried. We asked and they do cook in peanut oil so if there is an allergy be cautious.(although standard peanut oil is believed to be safe for peanut allergies). I had their shrimp burger and it overall tasted good, but for me nothing«fabulous» or «to die for». Which I was hoping for. Think of crab cake but with shrimp instead. The meal included a couple sides. Overall okay priced. A neat experience on a vacation but one visit on this vacation was enough.

We ate the best beach lunch today. Reminds me of Aunt Carries in Pt Judith, RI. Make sure to put this on your to do list next time you are on Hunting Island.

My wife and I hit up The Shack every time we visit Harbor Island. The shrimp boats dock across the street, so the seafood is off-the-boat fresh, quite literally. I always go for the large shrimp burger. It is the best shrimp burger I’ve ever had. Great batter and no filler, just chunks of buttery shrimp inside. I add their cocktail sauce, and pair it with a lemonade and whatever side I am feeling that day. But really you are good with any of the seafood. I’m not a clam strips fan, but I love their clam strips. I’m not a flounder fan, but I love their flounder. It’s all in the family-recipe batter. Bring cash but don’t expect fancy. If you want fancy, you’re welcome to pay two-and-a-half times more at some tourist trap, that looks nice. Me? I’ll stick to eating my tasty shrimp burger in a shack.

I want to start off that we understood that with the word«Shack» in the name, we did not expect a fine dining experience for our visit to the Shrimp Shack. The parking is somewhat of a disorganized affair– think of how people park at a house party or picnic and you have the general idea. Not really a problem but I can see how some people could be put off by the lack of a paved lot with nice crisply painted lines, etc. We came to the Shrimp Shack at an «off» hour for lunch hoping that the line at the ordering window would have diminished– no such luck. It still was about a half hour wait to put an order in. I suppose this is a testament to their products that people are willing to wait like this to get a shrimp-burger? It was about 45 mins total from getting in line to sitting down at a table with our food. I can only imagine what it must be like at «peak» times. There was a local person behind us that must have sensed we were tourists and chatted with us in a kind and friendly fashion to pass the time. The order taker and the person who handed us our food were both very nice and welcoming. They had a sort of down home sweetness to their manner that made the hot, sticky wait in line somewhat easier to bear. The«process» in general did not seem conducive to parents with young or overly sensitive children. Beware of coming to the Shrimp Shack if you are not an adult with something of a quick wit. Yes the prices are somewhat higher than«Dollar Menu», but this is a resort area and anyone who doesn’t expect to be up-charged to some degree could use a reality check. It’s unfair to compare a handmade family recipe shrimp-burger to a national chain mystery meat burger in the first place. The alternative for those who complain about price, etc. is to GO to the national chain and get the usual dollar special. But I digress: As another reviewer mentioned– the super shrimp-burger with sweet tea is the hot ticket. I combined mine with sweet potato fries and added cocktail sauce just because that’s the way that I roll. The burger was awesome and the fries good/fair; a bit soggy for my tastes but I am told that’s the proper preparation here in the area. I wonder what they would be like with some malt vinegar on them? We chose to sit outside at one of the picnic tables and it was somewhat of a battle to fend off the insects. If I had it to do over again, I would try the inside screened dining area instead to avoid this problem. Unfortunately there are only a few seats«inside» so it’s not always possible to snag a bug free seat. I noticed that people were friendly about sharing tables and such so it appears that being bold and asking to join someone else can pay off. I wanted to try either their key lime pie or pecan pie but waved it off as the line was still formidable after we finished with lunch and to be honest 30+ mins. standing in line for pie seemed absurd. Tip: order your dessert at the same time as your meal if at all possible, or call in your order when you are about 20 mins. from arrival because phone orders apparently bypass the wait in the«order» line altogether! Overall we loved our visit to The Shrimp Shack– not only for the delicious food but to enjoy a bit of the local color too. We hope you will give them a try when you are in the area.

Best shrimp burgers. Make sure to pair it with a sweet tea. This is one of my favorite places in Beaufort. The location makes for the perfect stop after a day at the beach. Local gem. Highly recommended.

I live in Atlanta, and eat out about 5 days a week. My wife and I are total foodies very rarely eat at chain restaurants. I tell you all of this to let you know his place is amazing! Order the shrimp burger. Get the super sized. It comes on a soft, but sturdy bun. They put a thin layer of tartar sauce on. I highly recommend adding the cocktail sauce which has a lot of horseradish in it. The French Fries are okay. The hush puppies are amazing. They only accept cash and check. If they ever wanted to open another restaurant I would totally fund it in Atlanta. There is nothing like the shrimp burgers I promise you!!!

These shrimp burgers were WHAT’S UP, but even supersized, they were very much on the small side for the price. This was also made more obvious by the fact that they are delicious, and you’ll end up wanting to eat way more than one fairly thin patty. I highly recommend getting sweet potato fries on the side, as well as checking the hours before you go(by giving them a call). This was a great pit stop before/after a day at Hunting Island. FYI: Cash only.

No bargains here. We got the shrimp dinner with onion rings and slaw. Portions are small and the prices are not so cheap. Food was ok but you will pay a lot for a spoonful of coleslaw and a couple of onion rings with your shrimp. $ 10.99. Place your order at the window and wait until they call your number. Make sure you have cash because they don’t take anything else. There are better places around if you want seafood. Try the Foolish Frog in Frogmore.

A classic roadside seafood shack. We had the shrimp burger and shrimp dinner with sweet potato fries and onion rings. Both were good.

Let me start off by saying that I feel really annoyed reading half of these reviews. I’m very confused by them. Where the Shrimp Burger recipe is a highly guarded family secret, I can tell it absolutely is not filled with breading. It’s ground shrimp held together by some type of binding agent and absolutely delicious. I’ve never had another shrimp burger like this, one that was purely shrimp. The portion sizes of the sides can be small sometimes, but where else are you paying $ 1.50 for sides? Don’t be greedy, order two! The place is called the Shrimp SHACK! Don’t go there expecting fine dining. It’s a quaint, beach restaurant where you can enjoy extremely local seafood on the screened in porch and feel the salty breeze as you sip on your very Southern, very sweet tea. It’s impossible to take trip down to the local beaches and not make a stop at The Shack for some delicious local seafood. Almost everything is fried, but hey… that’s how us Southerners do it. Try a seafood dinner with your favorite catch or combination of seafood and two sides. There hushpuppies are delicious. Simple. Not those dense cardboard balls you get at most seafood restaurants. These are light and fluffly. Shrimp Salad, Boiled Shrimp, and Deviled Crabs are your non fried options. Not feeling the seafood? Shrimp Shack has delcioius burgers, chick filets, and nuggets for the kids. The ladies in the back are the sweetest you’ve ever met. They’ve been running the show for years. During the summer you can find a gang of teenagers working their summer away. Order a tea or lemonade for free refills, soda refills are a quarter. Make sure you call for hours. They are very seasonal and never open on Sunday.
