Visited for the first time since new management took over. I got to admit I was disappointed. Gyros were terrible and the Monte Cristo was Meh. I hope they get their act together but for now it doesn’t compare to the former Mels.

Went here on Mother’s Day for a quick breakfast and had a great experience. Off the beaten path, this place wasn’t too busy and we were seated fast. When you walk in, you know what you’re getting… a quick, diner dining experience like the old days. Super friendly group of people, and I love when you can see the entire grill/cooking area. You can sit at the bar or grab a table. Coffee came fast, hot and frequently. Server was happy and quick with recommendations when asked. Maybe a little on the pricy side but I guess that’s just how things are nowadays. I’d go back in a second and you should too!

New ownership at Mel’s. I want this place to do well because it is the closest diner for breakfast. Service was very friendly(5), but the vegetarian omelette not the best, give it a 2. Nice size, but the American chess was folded up inside and not melted, and overall it was watery as heck. coffee was good. I will give it another chance, but not with the omelette. State Street diner in Geneva is still the best diner around.

I was just at Mels in Campton Hills. I can always tell after eating at a place, by the reviews, who eats out a lot,(so don’t know what good food is) and people like me who usually eat at home because food out is typically marginally preferable to going hungry or worse and just as typically costing 4 to 8 times what it costs one to make at home in several minutes. If you liked Mels several years ago before they closed down, its essentially the same place, so you will like it again. If you usually eat at home, so find typical café food kind of offensive and over priced for what they serve you, and you eat here anyway, you can’t now say that you haven’t been warned. The people that work there seem to be genuinely nice, but for what they charge, the food should be homemade and excellent, rather than the tasteless, other than salt, second rate,(but dressed up here) quality food almost all ma & pa cafés seem to serve. I had the chicken soup. I would rate it on a par with Campbell’s chunky, it’s ok. I had a Ruben sandwich. Its was noticeably light in really really tender tasteless corned beef, but had plenty of that gross liquid kind of «swiss cheese» on it. The onion rings that I had with the ruben,(yes I know, not really a good combo., but the waitress wasn’t taking” nothing thank you”, for a side) were as bad as any frozen prepared onion rings as I’ve ever had. The coffee was ok. I guess I just expected Much better that what I got for $ 11+, +tip. So, to sum up. If you eat out a lot, so you likely don’t know what good food tastes like, and you don’t mind paying premium prices for it, then I think you will like this place. I personally see no reason to go back.

I had heard some fuss about this place, so I went to check it out. Yes, the breakfast burrito is very good, but that’s where the kudos end. Our waitress was cold and emotionless. Was she human? It was a weekday around 10am, so it was nearly empty in there, so it’s not as if she was overwhelmed. Also, the atmosphere was dumpy, even for a diner, which I generally don’t expect to be hip places to dine. It was more than $ 30 for 2 of us, which for a dingy environment and uninterested service, I’d rather spend my money elsewhere. Back to my favorite, Nosh, in Geneva.

My first trip to Mel’s was this week. Service was friendly and efficient. Food was good, not exciting but good. I can see this is not a diner where there is a tremendous selection but just the staples. I am not sure I would go there for a special breakfast but only if I wanted to grab something fast and did not feel like making it at home. I could see that there are probably ‘regulars’ who come in for coffee and toast. What I would love to see is a signature dish or seasonal(like blueberry pancakes), even waffles. However, if you are looking to get out of the house and catch a standard breakfast this is the place.

Excellent food and service. We had eaten at Mel’s on Geneva for the last two years, and we are so thankful that Mel’s is now near our house in West St. Charles. Try the Breakfast Burrito, it’s awesome.
