3 stars because the Hot Pastrami sandwich on rye can be an awesome 5 stars or a lame 1 star all depending on who is behind the counter. Today I just got a 1 star version. It contained barely a layer of meat which consisted ONLY of chopped tough ends of pastrami made of 2⁄3 fat. If I worked closer — I would demand my money back. But last time it was AMAZING. Schizo sandwich. Their bread and oatmeal honey cookies are always good.

Best sandwich spot ever! The bread is always fresh. I usually call in my order in advance. I usually order the French baguette sandwich, I add avocado, and always get it toasted. All sandwich orders come with lays classic chips. Location is great, service is good, and the produce is always fresh. I wish they were open past 6:00PM on weekdays but it makes business sense.

I’m editing this review. Just heard from from the owner and I am impressed with his message. I will be returning for another try. It’s nice to hear the business was busy. The food must be great and I clearly need to give it a try. Went in at 9am for some breakfast. Coffee not ready. Only had decaf. Out of all muffins. They had a few items sitting out. Wow. I heard good things about this place but I didn’t see it. It’s dirty and they clearly are not trying to drive business. Why be open? Would not bother going here.

The Bread Store has a great selection of sandwiches, bread, and pastries. The bread is clearly fresh and cut right there in house(my friends and I watched the machine do its business several times — fascinating!). Service was slow because few staff were behind the counter. I ordered the half soup(vegetarian chili) and half hot pastrami on rye. It was carb heaven because the chili still came out with half a crusty baguette, in addition to the sandwich and I ATEITALL. The sandwich was well-stacked, hot, and delicious. The chili was pretty good, a little bit more like refried beans than chili. The baguette was spectacular; the bread here is really quite good. Four-stars because the seating is a bit uncomfortable, the tables had clearly not been wiped down for awhile, and things ran slow because of low staff numbers.

This is the only place I will order a Veggie Sandwich. And you know it’s good because I don’t crave veggie sandwiches – ever. But this, this is sensational.

This place was okay! A decent sandwich and a good pickle spear. I didn’t feel that the ingredients were as fresh or tasty as the Sandwich Spot’s, especially their turkey. I also didn’t thing their bread was much better, which surprised me given the name of this place. But I’d probably have to try other kinds of breads there before I can make a fair comparison. Still, it’s a pretty good, local spot for those in the neighborhood.

I was told the pick two combo was only a few bucks by the cashier but when I ordered my half turkey on honey oat & a half ceasar salad it came out to $ 9.32…um that’s not a few bucks dude. Togo’s offers the same deal with much more quantity for $ 7. Dont get me wrong the sandwhich was good but it’s the same quality as other sandwhich eateries. The baguette was so hard! Work on that please!

I no longer buy my bread from a grocery store. We love the sourdough and honey wheat. I recommend you try to get their raisin bread when it’s available. Very cool business.

2 trips in 2 days. ‘Nuff said. This place is fantastic. I come here every time I come to a convention in Sacramento. And always more than once. This place has well crafted, layers of flavor, wide varieties of sandwich awesomeness. Their bread is all very good — crunchy, hearty crust… flavorful spongy center… not too soft, not too hard. Seriously delicious. My personal favorite is their veggie sandwich with avocado add on. The way that they layer the ingredients(all super fresh) and put the dill sauce on shows serious craftsmanship and balance. This isn’t a thrown together mish mash of ingredients. You can taste the quality. I love this sandwich so much that I made it my wife’s picture on my phone for awhile, which is weird I admit, but shows some serious love for the sandwich:) I’ve had the hot Cubano sandwich as well, which is a great combination of tang, spice, and salt. Again, depth of flavor is evident here. These guys are sandwich artists and I’m loving what they are making. Definitely come here if you are in town and looking for a great lunch. Place gets packed, so be prepared to wait a bit. But it’s totally worth it. The line says it all.

Just got to the bread store. Lunch time rush like I would expect. It’s very clean, smells fantastic. No one greets you when you walk in(that’s no biggie) it took roughly 10m-15m before I was able to order. The young guy at the register was friendly, welcomed me and said he was glad i found this place, being that it was my first time. He did seem a little overwhelmed. Why I took off the stars was because no one uses gloves here. Made me want to leave. They’re touching their faces, clothes, drawers, counters, register, going the back, scratching their arms. Yuck. I received my soup in less than 5m. I’ll update once I eat the soup. The soup was mediocre at best, lacked flavor. It does have a kick to it. Will eat it once I’m home and can add some seasoning to it. Lots of veggies in it which is nice. I wouldn’t order i again. Doubt I will be back.

Best Sandwich in California I have ever had! That is a bold statement coming from a native Californian from Sonoma County, as we have great sandwiches where I come from. I ordered a turkey sandwich with avocado added on sliced sourdough. The bread is as fresh as it gets, and all the ingredients taste extremely fresh. Every time I drive through the Sacramento area I make it a point to stop, or show off to a friend. I want this place to be known as a must for an outstanding sandwich and bread. I made it appoint to meet the owner and shake his hand for his great work. Keep it up! I will continue to share my experience.

I can remember coming to the bread store 20 years ago getting a hot chocolate in the morning with a cinnamon stick in it as a kid! BNot sure if they still do that… but I’m happy to report that the Bread Store is still just as amazing 20 years later! I’m a vegetarian so I always get their veggie sandwich but it is amazing every time. I highly recommend their focaccia bread! They bake it with cheese and tomatoes on the top so it just adds to the goodness of the sandwich. Whenever I’m in the downtown area around lunch I make sure to eat here. The wait can be long if you hit it around lunch rush, but they’re always efficient and get the sandwiches out quickly. The staff is a bit quirky but they’ve always been polite and kind to me so who cares. Stop in, you will not regret it!

The tuna is so bomb. Definitely coming back to try others. And the service is quite speedy. Had our food within 10 minutes. The bread is so on point too. Also coming back for loaves and such. Prices are on point too.

My friend and I were originally drawn in by the name and when we saw the pictures for the El Cubano, we were sold. At the suggestion of our cashier, we opted to split an El Cubano since we didn’t want to be too stuffed. Our order came out pretty quickly; granted, we came after the lunch rush. They came with a pickle and a bag of chips for each of us which made the perfect sized meal. The sandwich itself was absolutely delicious. The ciabatta was pretty thick but the bread to filling ratio was well balanced. The price is also pretty good for the amount of food you get. There aren’t too many options sandwich-wise here though: only 3 cold and 4 hot ones according to the menu. There are some extra add-ons, including an option for cranberry. There are some reviews about the service but we experienced really good service. We interacted with three different employees and they were all very friendly. The owner seems to be pretty active on the Unilocal page so I’m assuming that they’ve been making improvements. Overally, this is a lovely little sandwich shop. I would definitely come here often if I lived closer. I don’t think there’s a sandwich on Earth that could justify an almost two hour drive…

When I need motivation My one solution is bread store because the bread stays strong, yeah yeah It’s always across the corner, right where I want it All these other lunch places are tempting but I’m empty when the food is gone And they say Do you need the food? Do you think it’s pretty Do I make you feel like cheating(on your regular food menu) And I’m like no not really because Oh I think I’ve become the bread store’s cheerleader! (sung to the lyrics of Cheerleader by OMI) When I started my internship, I was told to explore Sacramento and stop eating at the same places(like pieology). The lines at pieology were sometimes 30 minutes and when they were, I always went straight here. When I first got here, I noticed how there were only 3 – 5 people in line. The line doesn’t move as fast but it’s much shorter so I got my food quickly and quickly ate it at work. If the bread store were in a more central location, I could see it doing much better. In honor of Cuba finally starting to open its borders, I ordered the El Cubano. Boy was it delicious! Definitely a five star sandwich! Why is this place four? I was not crazy about the reuben. My supervisor gets a reuben nearly every lunch so I decided to get one to tease him. I like reubens but this one was another story. There was just too much bread and I didn’t get to taste the pastrami that I love at my favorite LA Jewish Delis. So overall, four stars for the great Cubano and the not as great Reuben.

OMG, how have I not been here before! The Bread Store is my absolute new favorite place to get sandwiches! Being from Davis, I really like Zia’s Delicatessen, but The Bread Store is a revelation. With a name like The Bread Store, the place better have some decent bread — and it does. The bread here is spectacular. It has a great harder crunchy crust with a perfectly chewy center. The bread is highly addicting. I chose to get a turkey sandwich on sourdough. It was exactly that, but the best version of it! It was fresh and delicious and left me satisfied in the end. My wife got the multi-grain bread. I’m not usually one who enjoys multi-grain, but after having a bite of her sandwich I may have changed my mind if I get it at the bread store. We ended up leaving with another roll just because it was so great. I’m anticipating eating that bad boy soon! Love, love, love The Bread Store and highly recommend it!

Big starts to Andy the owner. He replied to my comment and sent me a complimentary gift card. How thoughtful. We need more caring owners like Andy. If I could give this place 100 stars, I would. Big props to a local business with great, consistent food!

I decided to come here on a Monday morning around 6:45 a.m. since I work downtown and saw that they were open. I was excited when I saw that they offered breakfast sandwiches, but then was informed that they ran out of eggs. Since I’m vegetarian and the breakfast sandwich only came with egg, meat, and cheese on a croissant, no egg was not going to cut it. I opted for a freshly baked croissant instead, which while tasty, would of been better with egg and cheese. I thought that I could maybe grab a sandwich for lunch, but then was told that it would have to be on a croissant because all the breads are only done at 10:30 a.m. Say what? Sounds like they should only be opening at 11 a.m. rather than 6:30 a.m. if they won’t have things available till then anyways. I recommend that they either expand their breakfast menu and keep things in stock or change their hours to only open at lunch. Until then, I don’t see myself going out of my way to come back.

I was soooo disappointed with past Friday lunch service. I came in around 12:50 pm craving the El Cubano sandwich and a sweet treat. I waited and waited… It took 23 minutes to get my el Cubano sandwich, and I’m not including the time I waited in line to order.(And yes, I did ask about the order after awhile of waiting). With 3 sandwich makers behind the counter, it shouldn’t have taken that long. Ugh! Oh, Bread Store… how you tortured me with the long wait. I had to hurry back to the office, which delayed me sinking my teeth into the fresh hot sandwich. Downside: 1) it took nearly 30 minutes to get a sandwich, 2) no apology after I told them I’ve been waiting for nearly 20 minutes and 3) cookie pricing is a bit high $ 2.50. Upside: 1) El Cubano sandwich is delicious, and 2) Danishes and honey oatmeal cookie is tasty.
