There aren’t a lot of places in the area where you can purchase some good Chinese birthday cake, so when I found this on Unilocal,I kind of had to check it out. It’s definitely a shorter drive than hauling myself to Oakland or San Francisco’s Chinatown. The service is subpar, but that’s to be expected of these places. They’re not in business for the stellar service. It’s like that in Chinatown too, so I guess you can say this is authentic. The food is usually fresh, but they do run out of stuff quickly. If you can, try and go earlier in the day. They have the sponge cake, birthday cake, coconut buns, and pork buns you can find at your regular Chinese bakery. It’s pretty authentic. I would come back only because I don’t really have much in the way of options for these places.

Haven’t been here for awhile so I was stoked to gets some goodies. I got a big bitch who was rude, doesn’t like her job… And some mold. On top of that, the pastry was under baked.

I love coming here only for the paper sponge cake. I’ve order cake before too, but the cake wasn’t as good as the paper sponge cake. The cream they use on the cake taste really fake just doesn’t taste right. There customer service here is really bad. The lady that runs the front counter is straight up rude, she seem to hate her job. Don’t ask her any questions or else she will run you off. Smh. If it wasn’t for the sponge cake I will never enter this establishment. 5 star for the paper sponge cake and –5 star for her attitude FYI: the lady runs the front is short, fat and in her mid 30’s is rude as F!

After reading all the reviews and everyone raving about the fruit cake I decided to give this place a try. I bought the 8″ fruit cake, $ 25 I felt a little pricey for a 8″ cake. After reading all the reviews I was expecting bad customer service when I waked in. But that wasn’t the case at all. The lady greeted me, packed my cake up nicely, thanked me for coming in. The cake it self is super light sponge cake with a very light whipped cream like frosting. The fruits were all very fresh, a mixture of strawberries, apples, blueberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, pineapples and oranges. Overall a delicious cake, but a little pricey.

The cake is pretty… but the service is terrible. It’s so bad that I won’t be returning despite how good the cake tastes(haven’t tasted it yet). After I paid, the lady walked to the back kitchen. She didn’t say«thank you» or «bye» or give me a receipt to signal that I was done. I stood there awkwardly for 2 minutes wondering if it was okay for me to go. What a rude and uncomfortable experience. I just paid you $ 18 for a cake I can buy anywhere else.

My first time ordering a cake from here, referred by my coworker, got a cake with double fruit for my daughters 11th birthday party $ 35, and let me say it was so good! the fruit was fresh and so nicely placed. The cake was moist and spongy to perfection, I will most be coming back here for more cakes for sure!

Delicious Cake… Bad Service. I recently purchased a full sheet cake for a party. I’ve grown up to fruit basket cakes since I was littler icing in Oakland/SF and was really excited to try one of their cakes up here in Sacramento. The pricing was in the expensive end. They have their regular fruit basket case for $ 40 something… their double fruit cake is double the price for some extra fruit decorated in top…$ 40 something more for extra fruit??? I ordered the cake few days before I needed it. I included writing on top and was planning to pick up the cake at 7:30a when they opened. The lady who took my order said«To come on time because we have a lot of cake.» I thought that was weird to say to a customer. But I confirmed with her the cake should be ready to pick up when I arrive at 7:30, she said«yes». So come pick up day, I arrived on time to pick up my cake. First off, there was no writing on it. Second, she asked me to stay until 8am for the person who writes in cake is due to arrive then. What is the point of telling me to come on time? How come no one communicated to me before I ordered the cake? I could’ve came after 8am to have this done. I made sure I addressed this issue. Due to time constraint, I had to get this done asap. So this lady behind the counter did a not so decent job on the writing. She had the nerve to ask«Is this ok?» Ummmmm, do I have a choice??? It’s been written on already!!! Don’t get me wrong, the cake was good. I would buy again BUT not early in the morning… NOT the double fruit(not worth the price). Will try some of their pastries too, didn’t have enough time to order them.

First time here and bought the mix fruit cake for my son bday. Cake was super soft and had a bunch of fruits inside… customer service was awesome. Man behind the counter stayed a little later after closing because I told him I was coming but running late. He was really nice about it. Thank you so much!

The fruit basket cake is absolutely to die for! It’s beautiful to look at and chock full of fresh fruit! It was a huge hit at my party. I got the rectangular one and it was gone before the party was even over. I personally am not even a huge fan of desserts, but I just couldn’t resist having not one, but two large pieces! Absolutely delicious!

Food is great but the 2 stars because customer service NEEDS improvement. TIP: make sure you bring cash because they charge a fee. 5% for credit card and $ 1 for debit

My husband bought me a birthday cake from here. I remember their cakes being a lot better than the one he got. The cake itself was dry, not good like it use to be. The fruit also seemed dry and old. Not the best I’ve had.

I love their fruit basket cake. It’s light due to the fruit and sponge cake with whipped cream frosting. They make it look so delicious and beautiful.

I ordered an 8 inch fruit basket cake for the first time for my mom’s birthday. The cake was surprisingly very fresh and moist. There was a lot of fruit toppings both on the inside and on top of the cake. Fruits also tasted very fresh and ripe. The icing is very light and not too sweet compared to other Asian bakeries in town. They also sell other bakery goods such as cookies, cupcakes, egg tarts and bread. I will definitely order a cake from here again for the next upcoming birthday! :)

This unassuming bakery sits in a small unassuming strip mall, but apparently it has made itself popular despite it’s location. Joe K and I were running some daily errands and started craving something sweet. That’s when Joe recommended checking this place out as a dessert destination. I have had their delicious fruit basket cakes in the past, never realizing that this was the place that created them until now! Upon entering, I noticed that we must have come at a late time of day, because the selections were a little sparse and picked over. They still had their tempting fruit basket cakes and fruit tarts available, but we just wanted something smaller. Joe decided on purchasing some almond cookies and Baos to take home. I didn’t see anything that had chocolate as the main ingredient and was a little disappointed on what they had left to choose from. After a full day of completing my chores and errands, I was too tired and forgot about eating our desserts. Needless to say, Joe ate everything before I had the chance to try them out! Anyway, I still have to rate them at least 4 stars, because those fruit basket cakes are the main attraction! I just might secretly return here alone and buy a fruit tart all for myself!

Damn great bakery goods including my favorite: buttercream bun! Oh my goodness we went here again yesterday and enjoyed the red bean bun, custard bun and buttercream bun. Amazing! Also had iced coffee… wonderful! I am glad we don’t live close by!

I come in for the the Thai tea with boba. It’s really sweet, but Thai tea served almost anywhere is overly sweet. I like coming here because the Thai tea boba is consistently good and it’s probably the best priced Thai tea boba I’ve seen. I’ve also had the baked goods which are also good. The pork buns here aren’t my favorite, but they’ll do in a pinch, and I enjoy the fruit tarts and fruit cupcakes, good if you are craving fruit basket cake but don’t have an event that warrants a whole cake.

My family and I usually come here for the fruit basket cake for birthdays and such. Their cakes are light and not too sweet. The taste is usually consistent. Today I went in to get a cake for my boyfriend’s birthday. They close earlier on Sunday so there wasn’t much to select from. I got a blue and yellow cake and they wrote on with red gel! Wtf? The handwriting wasn’t very beautiful either. I decided to let it got and just get the heck out of there. When I got home and took out the cake, I realized that the person who did the writing wrote, not only crooked, but upside down as well! Obviously presentation isn’t a priority/forte. I couldn’t do anything about it because they were already closed and I already paid for it. After cutting the cake, it tastes like it usually does. However, while chewing, I heard a crunch! I took it out and it was a big piece of egg shell! I’m absolutely not going back! Very disappointed!

This bakery has been a recommendation from a friend of a family, and we’ve been fans for several years since. My review is for their fruit basket cake. We’ve been ordering the fruit basket cake for several years now. It’s always delicious. We appreciate a more subtle hint of sweet versus the sweet cakes we are so accustomed to, at most bakeries. The cake here, is a moist sponge cake. They put a decent amount of fruit on top also, from watermelon to mango, they’re very generous on the fruit. Plus, the price is unbeatable. The store is tiny but packed with a decent amount of baked goodies. They sell little sponge cup cakes and egg tarts at about a buck each, so yummy. It’s perfect for your drive home and satisfies your desire for a bite of that cake. Be patient when ordering, there is a slight language barrier. My suggestion is that you write down what you would like written on top of your cake. Believe me, we’ve had those frustrations of trying to order over the phone. We’ve learned it’s best to go in and write down what you want. Yeah, some of the reviewers mentioned the lettering may not be as fancy as your better bakeries. But once you take a bite, you won’t care!

I came here to get a decorated cake for a friend’s retirement party. The woman behind the counter was nice and patient when I was mulling over what sort of decoration I wanted. Flipping through their cake portfolio book for ideas, I got the idea for making the top of the cake look like a landing strip at a small airport. We bought a small, flaky pastry to nibble on while sketching ideas and writing notes onto a scrap of paper. We made sure that we made a clear and concise«map» of what we wanted. Overall, it was a very pleasant interaction with the bakery. A few days later, when I picked up the cake, it was just as I’d hoped: beautiful! The decorator here is talented and artistic. The cake was applauded and well-received at the party. One person insisted on picking it up and showing it off around the room before we cut it up to serve. The moist, fresh cake was very tasty and pleasant as a dessert after a filling dinner. I had several people ask me where I’d gotten the cake. They liked that it was fresh and very light… not overly sweet. I will definitely return to J & J Bakery for future cakes.
