Seems this place has closed… Went with my best friend in late June. Some type of antipasto plate and spicy green beans for apps. Steak tips(with fries and pasta… yea, my friend is weird) and cheese ravioli for main courses. Lemon berry cake for dessert. The apps and main courses were unremarkable. The dessert was delicious — comes from the bakery nearby(Sweet Tooth) which I have yet to check out but am still eager to do so! I wish we had tried one of the specials on the chalk menu. The food is hearty and portions are generous, but I left feeling the prices were steep. If the owners ever open another place, I would be willing to give it a try… regardless, I really need to stop at Sweet Tooth soon!

sweet omelet + homemade sausage + mimosa(s) = heaven By far one of my favs for some weekend breakfast/brunch close to home. Unassuming and unpretentious — great service, reasonable prices and yummy food… * it is a small place — Peter does most of the cooking while Natasha takes care of the service. As such life comes up… the owners have lives/obligations like the rest of us… The first time we tried to visit for some breakfast, we were greeted by a sign apologizing that they were away that weekend for a wedding… it’s the only time I encountered this«issue»… but you may want to give a ring if St. A’s isn’t close by…

I had really been looking forward to visiting St. Alphonzo’s. Small place — feels like you’re going into someone’s home. The menus are hand drawn and very neat. But the important part — the food — was unimpressive and certain entrees a bit overpriced to me… Am I missing something?! I see so many other outstanding ratings but it felt like someone made dinner for me. It didn’t feel like restaurant food. Or is that the point?

Don’t read this review! I won’t have a seat when I want to eat here next time. This place is like a big comfy couch for your taste buds to perch up for a couple hours. I’m glad it is tucked away on A where no one will find it. I went hunting yesterday with a friend for the elusive St. As and found it. We split the obligatory dish of calamari then I had the BBQ Beef plate with a side salad and some corn bread. It was tasty and though I did not like the barbecue sauce as it was too vinegary for my liking, everything else was truly great. I walked to Drink after as well which helped cap the night. I’ll have to get dessert and the spicy green beans next time and yes, oh yes there will be a next time.

I’m really not one for long, verbose reviews… so I’ll keep this short and sweet. Natasha and Peter are amazing, and St. Alphonzo’s Kitchen is a direct reflection of their skill and ability. Food = AMAZING. Atmosphere = SUPERCHILL/RELAXED. Service = FRIENDLY, ACCOMMODATING, ALL-AROUNDFANTASTIC. Prices = BEYONDREASONABLE. I love absolutely everything on their menu, and they have it all. I have eaten here a few times with the man, and we’ve always been treated exceptionally well and eaten like kings. Also, it’s right around the corner from the Broadway T stop(red line), and parking in that part of Southie isn’t bad at all. This is definitely a must-try!

Everyone else raves about this place… I wish I could rate their experiences instead of my own. Went here last night… the water served before our meal was seriously the worst tasting water I’ve ever had in my whole life. I know this may seem minor, but if it seems minor, you’re thinking that it’s that kind of water that has a slight taste to it and isn’t the Fiji you’re accustomed to. Nope. This water tasted bad. Bad bad bad. Awful bad. Very bad. Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad. This water was worse than Alexander’s day. We ordered The Big Cheese as an appetizer, and it was phenomenal. Think of a mozzarella stick on steroids. Cheesy, gooey, and delicious. That’s where the awesomeness ended. She had the roasted chicken and mashed potatoes… I had the steak tips. Her’s was better than mine, but still tasted like you could have gone to Stop and Shop and bought a rotisserie chicken and saved yourself some money on a better meal. My steak tips ordered medium rare came medium well to well and were extremely tough and fibrous. And fatty. Mashed potatoes were bland; not bad, but nothing to write home about. I think my experience must have been an anomaly because every else raves about this place… I’ll give it another shot in hopes of a better experience. I don’t know why everyone was talking about how cheap it is… both of our entrees were $ 14…not awful, but I’d say on par for this type of entrée pretty much anywhere else.

We were really happy to stumble upon this place last week. From the space itself to the menu to the beer and wine list, it’s got a consistent theme: small, simple, and very good. I got the meatloaf sandwich and my wife got the Cuban; both were delicious and only $ 8 – 9 with tasty fries. The service was, as someone else said, very warm and personal without being obtrusive. The only drawback was that we sat by the kitchen and I think our clothes kind of reeked of my sandwich’s sauteed onions at the party we went to later. So… sorry about that, everybody!

I have been to St. Alphonzo’s twice now and both times have topped my list of favorite dinners. That being said, I am yet to get the spicy green beans or be there on a day where they have red velvet cake(I’m itching to try both). The service is incredibly personal, though I would imagine it impossible not to be since you are sitting in(what feels like) someone’s home. The dining area is small, but manages not to feel crowded and instead captures a «home-y» vibe. Maybe it’s the eclectic decorations and maybe it’s the staff. Either way, I’m a huge fan. Food is fantastic with large portions and homemade seeping out of everything. I can recommend: — «The Big Cheese» — an appetizer that is essentially a big mozzarella stick, but so fun so say. The marinara is also amazing. — Greek salad — if you like feta, this is a must try — Calamari — HUGE portion and includes fried banana peppers. Fantastic. — Steak tips — Anything on the special’s board (Side note: This precedes my living in Southie, but they have stopped serving lunch. Check the hours on the website before you go!)

This place gets such phenomenal reviews and I feel like I’m quite out of place, but I’m calling it like I see it. This being said, I will admit that my experience is solely based on the food as I ordered for pick-up and did not dine in. It sounds very much like dining in here is a large part of the experience, so perhaps my food would have been more satisfying sitting in their dining room. I ordered the Chicken Parm dinner and I was told I could have two sides. My choices were mashed potatos, fries, caesar salad or house salad. I assumed, naturally, that Chicken Parm comes with pasta. It always comes with pasta! I was wrong. I ordered mashed potatoes and a caesar salad and when I picked up the order… I had chicken parm over mashed potatoes… not quite what I was hoping for. Don’t get me wrong, I love both mashed potatoes and chicken parm, but together… it’s just… wrong. Plus, the mashed were dry. Booo. The caesar salad was good, it had a kick to it, a little spicy and I could definitely taste the sardine component(or is it anchovy? they look the same…) I dunno… I wasn’t blown away. It was pretty good, but not anything I’m going to write home about.

I came here with a date before I realized that it was down a somewhat sketch looking street. Luckily, she didn’t think I was a huge creepster and bolt on me. The restaurant is a short walk from the Broadway T stop. It is a very cozy(read: small) unpretentious place. The food is also unpretentious and very good. I had the steak tips and they were delicious. And there’s something about their mashed potatoes that I love. My date had a chicken special and it came out very tender and juicy, which was a pleasant surprise because restaurants tend to cook the life out of chicken. We also had the spicy green beans that Unilocalers seem to rave about. They’re good but I don’t get what the hype was about. Overall, the food here is really good. I’ve been here a few times and the food is consistently delicious. The atmosphere is very intimate. Definitely worth a trip down to Southie.

I love St. Alphonso’s! You know a place is good when the menu is small, changes all the time, tastes phenomenal and is extremely affordable. You really feel like you have found something special there as you see the chef working in his tiny kitchen and the one waitress running back and forth. For brunch I had an awesome western omelette and out of this world home made sausage. Excellent mimosas!

I’ve been coming since they opened. It’s a great little place run by a husband and wife couple. The food is simple, homey, and consistently good. Steak-tips, pork chops, sandwiches, … It’s a great, nonsense local place. It’s a small place and only seats about 16?. They have beer and wine, no hard liquor. The only negative, is that the chef does have a heavy hand with the salt(especially on the pork chops), so I usually ask him to go easy. Great local place; definitely recommend it.

Great dine-in service; Peter and Natasha(owners) run a tight ship(somewhat literally), and have an outstanding menu. Try the spicy green beans. Order them once, and you’ll be hooked! Walking distance from the Broadway MBTA stop. If you’re in Boston for a short while(staying at the Westin Boston Waterfront, Seaport Boston Hotel, Renaissance Boston Waterfront), this is a short(3 – 4 min) cab ride. Just say«…corner of A Street and West 3rd in Southie.»

Located on A Street in Southie, this is the kind of gem that makes you eager and excited to support local businesses. There are all of about six tables in the entire place, one server, and one cook. Very cozy. Hip as can be, funky knick-knacks adorn the walls, while late 80’s/early 90s Brit-rock streamed from the speakers(had to go visit iTunes after being reminded of how good New Order’s «Substance» was). Add to that the wide front doors are kept open so that a nice breeze keeps the place cool, and well… an awesome first visit. The food was top-notch. True comfort food with a comfort food price. I had a Cuban sandwich and a plate of fries with a glass of Beamer’s Irish Stout. Yeah… this fat kid was pretty much set up after that. We will definitely be heading back. Eager to try breakfast. Right off Broadway Station on the Red line so EVERYONE should be trying this one!

Love it! Small, tasty, a 5 minute walk from where I live and they understand you when you say«I’m allergic to gluten». While there aren’t tons of food for us celiacs to eat, they do understand what it is and isn’t in. I got the chicken with mashed potatoes and a salad and of course a glass of Malbec. I left with half the chicken, a slight buzz and a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart and stomach for this place.

I remember going here when it first opened as Potbellies, then there was that legal issue with the name, so they had to change it. Regardless, it’s a perfect place for Southie — tiny but with an open kitchen and staff that serve everyone regardless of where you sit. I enjoy sitting at the counter and peering into the food preparation area. The chalkboard menu on the wall also gives it a more fun feel to it. Parking isn’t bad, as long as you pay attention to the posted signs on the street. The menu offers many classics with a unique twist, and nothing tasted boring. I had a really smoky eggplant soup, and I liked the pickled vegetables they gave as a side for the main dishes. There are options for vegetarians, too, and there are a lot of sandwich choices. Everything is under $ 20, and they managed to get a wine license, too. It’s one of those hidden Southie treasures. go check it out.

This unassuming little eatery in Southie has captured my heart and my stomach, with a dining room that holds maybe 14 people and a staff that treats you as if you were coming to dinner in their very own home. The menu is simple, filled with classics like mussels marinara and peppered with standouts like spicy string beans. These green little suckers are coated in a sauce made with sriracha(yes — cock sauce), olive oil, garlic and red pepper. My whole mouth was burning yet I couldn’t stop eating them. After each bite I cooled my palette down with some easy drinking Cabernet and went back for more! The list of sandwiches(all around $ 7 – 8) is reason alone to pop in here and, after sampling their Cuban(with a twist: a sprinkling of spicy peppers), I know I’ll be going back to try more of their selections. High up there on the cheap(but good) eats list, a meal for six people, with beers, apps, entrees and three bottles of wine, came to about $ 150. St. Alpohonzo’s is intimate without being romantic, friendly without the phony and just some solid, home-cooked food in an atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re coming home… sans the helping out with the dishes part.

So what started out as a casual fling with St. Alphonzo’s has pretty much turned into a full blown love affair. I LOVE St. Alphonzo’s so much in fact, that I’ve been there 3 times in the last week. I know, I have issues. But it just kinda, happens. I’ll drive down West Broadway and my car just turns right at A St, and oops… there’s St. Alphonzo’s on my right. Sooo since I’m right here, I might as well stop in for dinner. The staff in very nice and attentive. My first question is always: «Do you guys have red velvet cake tonight??» Actually, the last time I was there this past Tuesday, I didn’t even have to ask. The Irish waitress said, «And yes, we have red velvet cake tonight.» Eek, I think I have a problem.(Maybe I should just go up the street to Sweet Tooth Bakery and buy a whole cake!) So on to the food… yummy. The sandwiches are so good… I like the dagwood, the chicken parm, and the godfather. They come with lots of crispy, hot fries. The entrees are also very good and specials vary night to night. I also like that the entrees come with 2 sides. The caesar salad always has just the right amount of dressing and the parmesan shavings are a perfect topper. The pasta bolognese is pretty spectacular as well. The atmosphere is nice and cozy. There are only a few tables but I like it like that… it makes you feel special and always attended to. Bruce is my favorite waiter there, he even gave my dining partner a sampling of 3 or 4 hot sauces the last time we had him which I thought was very cool. OH! and get the REDVELVETCAKE! YUMYUM!
