A fairly new winery, but they clearly know what they’re doing. Lovely scenery and tasting room, great service, and several enjoyable wines. I especially enjoyed the chambourcin, the white chambourcin –only place I’ve ever seen one — and the unique Cayuga white.

Lovely vineyard in Caroline county. We met one of the owners — Ann was very nice and welcoming, we really enjoyed chatting with her. We sampled 8 wines and they were all great. The day was overcast and chilly so we didn’t stay long, but we did leave with 4 bottles and will be back soon to enjoy the rocking chairs and porch swing!

We went here on the recommendation of James River Cellars. The wines were ok. The white chambourcin was very good — very different. Small pours, but tasting included the glass. Cute stemless glasses with air bubbles. Met the owner, she was very nice.

Excellent winery. My husband and I went late on a Sunday afternoon. Not only did the owners stay open a little later to accommodate our arrival time, they were kind and a pleasure to talk to. The wine is great including white chambourcin which is amazing. We will definitely go to this winery again!

I happened to stop on my way somewhere else, and it was by far my favorite part of the trip. While most vineyards will hesitate to tell you how young their vines are, Sassafras Shade had old vines, which translated to amazing wine! Their vines have weathered the years while the owners pursued wine making as a hobby. While the vineyard is new, the wine rivals the best in VA thanks to the strength of their vines. This winery has won awards, and it’s easy to see why. To summarize: great people, amazing wine, better prices. If you pass this area without stopping, you’re making a huge mistake!
