1…10…100…1000… Orders of magnitude. Since 1000 is a milestone, I thought I’d mark this Unilocal not with a business but a state of mind. A Northern Exposure state of mind. Please play: Who woulda thunk that right here, smack-dab in the middle of Washington state we’d have: The Alaskan Riviera. If you’re a fan of the old TV show«Northern Exposure», you know what I’m talking about. Northern Exposure took place in the fictional Alaskan town of Cicely, AK. Being a Californian, I think I just assumed it was a real place. The town looked wild: snow, moose, northern lights, pine trees as far as the eye can see. But I eventually discovered Cicely was in fact: Roslyn, WA. I made my first visit down«Main St. Cicely» back in ’94 while road-trippin’ from California. I never thought I’d live in the same state as Cicely, but maybe it was just destiny. The series is long gone, but it still leaves an impression. I constantly think of the show’s characters and parallel with my life in some way. Dr. Joel Fleishman: Sometimes when I feel like I’m going to flip out and go crazy for the lack of «culture» out in eastern WA Ed: I have dreams of being a big time Hollywood director, a Native one no less! Chris in the Morning: I aspire to have Chris’ prowess on the mic, with his art, and with the ladies. Marilyn Whirlwind: She reminds me of my people(Northern Exposure gets total props for it’s portrayal of Natives). ******************** Cicely, AK ******************** The town is pretty much still in tact. *** The Brick( ): The outside of it looks as it did in the show. The interior isn’t like the set used in the show, but it’s still fun. *** Roslyn Café( ): It’s been ages since I’ve been here, but this is the joint which has the famous mural on it(«painted by hippies» as Maurice Minnifield said). The«apostrophe s» is long gone, but it still has its grandeur. *** Village Pizza( )): Although not much of this space was filmed on the show, I remember it’s «Village Pizza» sign on the show. They’re pizzas are pretty tasty, too. Now it’s been a couple years since I’ve walked around Cicely(aka Roslyn), but they still had good olé Minnifield Communications as it looked on the show. The office and Chris In The Morning’s KBHR studio was kept as it was( ). I also think they had Joel Fleischman’s office there(it was a gift shop a few years ago, complete with all sorts of Northern Exposure memorabilia). If you love or remember the show, you have to make a stop by Cicely, AK(just take the Roslyn Exit off of I-90). Thankfully there’s no Sarah Palin in this Alaska! «NORTHTOTHEFUTURE!!»
