Even on a cloudy late October morning, the Eagles soared, the views were spectacular and the train was a romantic getaway. Bring a picnic lunch, unless you want chili dogs and nachos from the«club» car, or opt for first class with lunch served, at $ 50 more per ticket though, I can pack one amazing lunch! 3 hour trip, great photo ops, good people. Plan to make an annual event.

This is also called the Potomac Eagle Scenic Railroad. The reason this scenic train is called as such is because they boast that once you get on their train, you would be able to see eagles. This was recommended to us while we were staying in Romney, WV. When we went to board the train, we realized that this train had a retro feel to it. There is a kitchen/concession car, the gondola, the car with all the seats, and the car with some tables. The train’s window uses a door latch to hold it open. There seems to be no central air so you’d just need to open the window. Once the train starts moving, the breeze that passes through is really nice. The train’s seats are adjustable depending on how you want the seats to face. You are also allowed to stick your head out of this train while it is moving. While seating inside the train and looking out, we saw a few cows and deer. Some cows were cooling themselves off by the river and some were hidden under the trees’ shades. There were fawns frolicking with their mothers too. Halfway through the trip, the train stopped and asked the passengers if they want to step out into the gondola. The gondola is the open air car of the train. Although wooden seats in the middle were available, most people stood and enjoyed the scenic view. Out on the gondola, we saw an eagle flew above us. We also saw a couple of cranes. The guide also pointed out the eagle’s nest. As we passed by the river, we also saw a few kayakers, boaters, and mooners. Since we only saw one eagle, the train operator explained that Romney, WV just encountered a big thunderstorm recently which made the river muddy. The eagles are having a hard time catching fish so they are flying above up on the mountains catching rabbits instead. It’s definitely a scenic and relaxing way to spend your time.
