I love this place– my favorite breakfast place around! I always make a point of coming here when I come home. Don’t miss their anadama bread !

A local institution. They make fantastic food. I honestly haven’t had a bad meal here yet. The food isn’t overly complicated or fussy but it is still delicious.

Sought out this place based on great Unilocal reviews. The reviews are right, great food, nice people. Waited about ten minutes for a table. Small restaurant seats maybe 25 or so. Had the corned beef hash, tasted great with a huge slice of homemade bread. Cash only so stop at an ATM.

Such a cute café in a small town. The place was crowded for 9:00am on a Tuesday but I grabbed a seat at the bar right away. The staff was obviously busy but made it a point to get me coffee right away and a menu. I ordered the usual, with sausage which was good but typical. The star of the meal was the grilled banana pecan brane muffin. It was unbelievable, probably one of the best muffins I have ever had. The carpe diem coffee was also very good. I would certainly return if I am ever back in the area.

First time here, already love this little place. Nice that they do different flavors of coffee, and even iced! The food is great, hearty, tastes fresh. The specials on the chalk board are the way to go. You can tell they enjoy making these special items. Great people. Cook brought out a fruit bowl for our 1 year old without us asking.

I’m a very easy going person, and I was literally shocked by how poor the service was here. I literally felt invisible. My friend and I went here on a Saturday morning and they weren’t particularly busy. There was a short wait, so we put our name in and then walked the the ATM(they don’t take cards). We were seated right when we got back, and that’s where it went south. We sat at our table, which was in the middle of the small dining room, for 15 minutes without being acknowledged at all. No menus, no coffee, no eye contact, nothing. Meanwhile, the two waitresses walked right by us multiple times to help tables that were seated after us. Other groups had their orders in and coffees delivered before we even had menus. We were seriously considering leaving when she finally came over to take our order. We had to ask for menus… Finally got our order in, then it was a solid 30 more minutes before it was ready. Again, I’m usually pretty easy going… I understand that 15 minutes for service and 30 minutes for food really isn’t that bad, but everyone else in the restaurant was being well attended to. The food was pretty good, standard breakfast food, and then we had to ask for the check multiple times before someone actually acknowledged us. I honestly felt invisible in the middle of the room.

We eat out quite often and were at a loss this morning as to where to go in the area for breakfast. Googled the Unilocal reviews for this area and here we are. Very nice, good food, pleasant place and excellent service. We will be back often!

Excellent food. Very unique offerings. Pleasant atmosphere. Service was a little slow. Waited for food and coffee longer than necessary. the only reason I didnt give it 5 stars.

My favorite place for breakfast. Phil and the crew are the best. When I walk in, the blackboard always has some creative dish that I have to try. I have only read the menu a couple times. I don’t know who comes up with the daily specials, but I always stop there. Every meal I’ve had there looks great and tastes amazing. One of my many, many pet peeves is bad coffee at a breakfast place. The coffee at the Black Bean is awesome. It’s full flavored, bold, and perks you right up. If you are interested in some light entertainment with your breakfast, sit at the bar. The folks behind the bar are always good for more than a few laughs. There is usually some light hearted banter back and forth, occasionally someone starts singing along with the stereo, or you can just watch how amazingly easy it is for good cooks to just throw things together effortlessly and have it come out amazing. I don’t care where you are, The Black Bean Café is well worth the trip. Don’t forget to check out the yummy stuff on the shelves under the cash register on your way out.

Correction about the Carpe Diem coffee — it’s ALL amazing. What I meant was that their Hazelnut coffee is the best Hazelnut I’ve ever had. It doesn’t have that fake hazelnut flavoring taste.

The Black Bean is our go-to breakfast place… and not just because it’s less than a block from our house. The food is always unique and tasty(Best. Hash. Ever.). You can tell the ingredients are all very fresh, and it’s hard to decide which special I want each time we go. Their pastries are great too, and their coffee is amazing :-D

Black Bean is a good, local breakfast joint. Bread is excellent, food is good, service is usually okay but nothing special. Local artwork and support of local business is excellent.

Cute and cozy with friendly staff and great menu. If it’s on the menu, be sure to get the Huevos Rancheros.

Delicious locally roasted coffee drinks and very good food. Total hidden gem. When I used to do laundry at the place down the street, I’d stop in for a breakfast sandwich and a double latte. Nice, comfortable place with great food. Local art shown on the walls.

Went to breakfast with a friend and sat at the breakfast bar. I got the hash with poached eggs and home fries and my friend got the 3 egg scramble. My eggs were perfectly poached atop a pillow of the best corned beef hash I’ve ever tasted. Very fresh and flavorful and full of chopped meat. My friend loved his breakfast too. Friendly, attentive waitstaff and relaxed cozy atmosphere. Love the Bean!

WAY better than I anticipated in terms of both atmosphere and food. Limited menu means freshness and quality reign here. Everything you could love in a breakfast place, sans grease on the spoons. Rollinsford is easier to get to by accident than on purpose, but the Black Bean makes a special trip worth it!

I love anywhere that will serve me breakfast in the afternoon, but this place is exceptional. The cinnamon swirl french toast was thick and fresh and I left with a chocolate chip cookie that was cooked to perfection(crisp on the edges but soft in the middle.. . nom, nom, nom…). I was there by myself, and so were a few other diners, but everyone was talking to each other and laughing. It was a nice change from LA. I’ll eat there often.

I’ll admit, I’ve been going out to eat a lot this weekend, and I totally blame Unilocal for it. That, and I’ve been depriving myself of going out lately, and I just needed a weekend like this to try a few new things. On to the review… Before today I had never been to Rollinsford before. It’s a hamlet of a community, and it’s not near anything I regularly go to, so the opportunity has never arisen. My girlfriend(SB) and I decided to go on an adventure today, so we struck out for the Black Bean Café and their homemade baked goods. Thank you, Jennifer W, for writing a review about this place and introducing me to my new favorite breakfast spot. The BBC is a lovely little one room restaurant(café really works for this place) that’s probably no bigger than my meager living room. What they lack in size, they make up for in warm wood floors, fresh baked breads, and beautiful local art. It’s so charming and cute, it makes other establishments pale in comparison. What else makes other breakfast joints pale in comparison? Their food. We decided on opening with some brioche, then closing with huevos rancheros and an egg scramble. Sadly, by the time we actually got around to going out for breakfast, other folks had beaten us to the other specials. The brioche was, in a word, ridiculous. It was an apple, raspberry, blackberry, and blueberry concoction of mouth watering excellence. The bread itself was light and buttery in flavor. The inside texture was soft and chewy, while the outside was just slightly crunchy, like a well baked bread should be. The berries were the perfect balance of tart and sweet, and I’m pretty sure I could have eaten six servings all by my lonesome. This bread may very well go on my deathbed wish-list… it’s that damn good. Seriously, if you go there, try it because, as I said before, it’s ridiculous. I ordered off the specials menu and got the last remaining huevos rancheros(huepa!). It featured a large, wheat tortilla, sprinkled inside and out with cheese, then griddled. It was topped with warm refried black beans, sour cream, a nice, fresh pico de gallo(or salsa fresco, whatever), and a whipped guacamole. It was wonderfully fresh tasting, and while huge, hearty, and very filling, it did not leave me feeling sickly full. I clean my plate less often than you’d think, and this time I definitely cleaned it. SB had an egg scramble of sausage, cheddar, broccoli, and onions. The eggs were moist and buttery. The sausage flavorful, the broccoli perfectly done(as in not too mushy, which happens all too often). Her homefries were good, but needed salt. We split a side of bacon, as I enjoy meat with breakfast, and it was perfectly cooked. All in all, I know I’m going to be going back to the Black Bean Café frequently. It’s just too damn delicious to pass up. And while it may not have a huge menu, what they do serve is all quality, which is what’s most important. Chances are, if you go there, you’ll find something you like. P. S. If there was one thing that was bad about the size of the place, it was that you couldn’t avoid listening to the kids who were left to run amok by their inattentive parents. Seriously guys, you can be comfortable in a place, but be respectful of the other patrons. Even if the staff doesn’t mind, that doesn’t mean you should let your kids run around unchecked.
