I have a 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo, a black belt in Kempo karate, and black belt in Mai Thai Kickboxing. I have competed in the 1988 Junior Olympics in TaeKwonDo for 12 – 14 yr olds. I placed 1st in sparring and 2nd in form in regional championships to qualify for state championships. I placed 1st in both sparring and form at the State Championships in Illinois to qualify for Jr. Olympics in Rochester, Minnesota. I signed my son up with ATA, because I wanted him to learn basics that I could expand for him if he wanted to join the international fighting community and to get an objective point of view for him. In the review though, I’d like to start with you will find what you are looking for. I have seen kids and instructors at ATA that break mold of the bad press that is circling the Internet about ATA. I have also seen students who fit the criteria that is published negatively about ATA. I believe kids are awkward as they grow up and that is definitely evident in the classes. There are kids who have great talent and there are kids who are passed through the ranks by virtue of time put in. I think Schafers ATA is a top performing school and one that is a good fit if you want your child to learn TKD in the ATA format. I have choose to remove our son from the school, but I have nothing bad to say about the school. I would like our son to fight a wider range of individuals through open tournaments and have more advanced training. So, it is a matter of what you are looking for.
