Academy Sports

My family’s favorite store. Each row and all items stocked well. Prices are comparable to other sporting stores. Each area has a clearance rack that has great discounts. We have bought several rifles, fishing poles, shoes, tennis rackets, and all types of clothes and Gamecock items.

A little over a week ago, the Upper Palmetto YMCA, at the request of Academy Sports & Outdoors, chose 30 of its most deserving kids to participate in a $ 100 back-​to-​school shopping spree at Academy’s Rock Hill, SC store. With Y and store staff accompanying the kids, they had an unbelievable time buying backpacks, lunch boxes, shoes, clothes, etc.
Exactly one week after the shopping spree, one of the 30 kids had a devastating experience. A young boy’s house burned to the ground and everything was lost!
This unfortunate experience was brought to the attention of Y staff who then approached Academy Sports about the possibility of, at the very least, replacing the items lost in the fire (from the shopping spree) as a small way to lift the spirits of the boy who was so deeply affected.
The YMCA staff would like to thank Academy Sports & Outdoors and all if its staff (especially the Department of Promotions and Marketing and those from the Rock Hill store), for going above and beyond by providing another shopping experience for the young boy and his guardian, this time, FAR exceeding the original gift amount.

I LOVE THIS STORE. Their products on clearance have great prices and their brands are quality. The staff is pretty busy, but attentive.

My girlfriend and I went to look for a treadmill. We found one at the academy store. We walked in and looked at it and tons of people walked by us and no one asked if we could be helped.
We left and went to Sams club just out of curiosity to see if they had any type of workout equipment. We didn’t find any so walked back over to academy and just went to the guy in the red shirt standing at they little kiosk at the front. We told him that we needed assistance with the treadmill and we had questions. Instead of helping he looked super confused and pointed at a tall older man named Bryan. So we walk to him. And my girlfriend told him what we were looking at. He rolled his eyes and held his hands up towards the guy in the red shirt and if that guy pawned us off on him. He said he was helping someone else and he would be back. So we waited 10 mins on the guy to come back (Bryan). He finally came over and we began to tell him what we are looking for, what we were interested in and he had no info to offer us and seemed too confused about the equipment we wanted. So he said he would go check the back. He came back and told us they were out of stock and he had no idea when one would be in. He then told us what days the truck came in, but couldn’t tell us if they would get any in. He said just call. We were willing to spend money on this or a better product but the customer service was horrible and it seemed like we were a nuisance to him for asking him to do his job and help us. My gf is a manager in an athletic store and I work in retail as well. And it just upsets us that some people just don’t seem to care about selling their employers product, especially to people who are willing to spend money!!! We then traveled to Dicks and where they didn’t have what we were looking for they had the best customer service and we got asked five times in 4 minutes if we needed assistance so that was awesome. We eventually found a decent one at Walmart and the folks there were so helpful. So academy. Not cool!

Academy is the type of place I can come to browse or buy… or both. There is a huge selection of all sorts of sporting goods, clothes, grills, shoes… etc.
Compared to the other sporting goods stores, Academy brings their A-​game. I bought my kids a basketball goal for $ 100 less than Dicks Sporting Goods for the same basic setup. In fact, I think the one I purchased was of better quality.
There’s not much to dislike about Academy. They could step up their game with higher end products… like some decent kayaks… but hey… you can’t have everything.
*Try to make a game out of getting past the greeter at the front doors. My son and I have found this to be pretty fun.

Yes, definitely a fan! Was so tired of going to Dicks, which is way overpriced. Academy Sports is A LOT bigger and has such a better lay out and selection. I got the most awesome kayak there for a price compared to Walmart! They also have some girly weights I’m going to get for the house. I’m looking very forward to some colder outdoor weather sports, too! Very happy with the overall atmosphere!

Well worth the short ride from Charlotte ! If your tired of paying the inflated prices at Dicks and REI take a fifteen minute ride south, while your here take advantage of the .30 cent per gallon discount on average on gas also!
