I stopped by Win Fa one day after work. I drive past this grocery story a couple times a week and I wanted to see how it stood up to Lee’s and Asia Food Market in Henrietta. Not even close. This place is like the ALDIs of Asian markets — lots of open boxes on the floor, freezer-burned frozen items, expired expiration dates, and empty shelves. The parking lot is small, behind the building, and on the busy intersection of Smith and Lake Ave. I had to gun my Mini to get out of the parking lot. There was a fresh meat section in which two of the three coolers were empty, and the fish department only had about three varieties of fish. The people working there seemed ornery and one of the workers seemed annoyed that I was«just looking.» Missing from the shelves were the fun fish snacks, the unfamiliar sweets in colorful wrappers, the head-on fresh poultry, and the just-killed seafood. Instead, Win Fa stocks its shelves with strange Asian toiletries(Chinese baby powder anyone?), cheap knives, $ 10 woks, plastic bowls, and bootleg dvds. Maybe if I was in the market for these things, I would appreciate this store more; however, I was hoping to find shockingly fresh, cheap produce, the novelty treats, live turtles, and the $ 30,000 vases. The only redeeming quality about this place is the extensive selection of fresh Asian herbs. There’s lemongrass, several varieties of basil, Chinese yellow chives, and even perilla. The scallions also looked good, as did the bitter melon. All in all, this place isn’t really worth the drive. I think I’ll stick to Asia Market.
