Elmwood Inn

Tried to give this place a second run but I am afraid that its gonna have to be a no. Both times that we have gone there service has been truly poor. When our meals arrived mine was cold and lacking in salad dressing even though the waitress did bring more when I flagged her down. Then we saw no one, drinks ran out about halfway through the meal and even though we were passed by multiple wait staff we stayed dry. After getting the wait staff attention and asking for drinks we were through with our meal before they could arrive. The real finisher was that my credit card was hit twice for the full amount of the meal. I have called the restaurant to ask what the deal was and without hesitation I was told that it would be cleared in a couple of hours. I did not give an amount other than stating that I was just there for lunch so apparently they knew something had happened and choose not to tell me. Not going back to this place and will have to monitor my credit card to verify that the double charge is cleared up.

I must say, I like the atmosphere of this place! Our server was ok. I was grateful that she suggested we get a pitch of beer after three of the four people in our party ordered the same type of beer-​she def saved is a few bucks there! We ordered the buffalo calamari as an appetizer and I was pretty happy with it! It has great flavor! My rueben with the homemade chips was a bit disappointing. The corned beef was very, very fatty and kind of tough. I had much higher expectations of the Reuben!

Came here last night with my brother, the place was completely dead due to weather. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and the soft pretzels. I wasn’t a fan of the grilled cheese, the blue cheese made it taste a tad bit salty, but the soft pretzels were awesome! They were soft and warm and came with 2 dipping sauces.

Friendly staff, quiet place to catch up with friends over beer/​drinks/​food. **one free drink with U of R ID Badge**. I ordered the World Series Burger and Fish Fry. It was OK. Fish fry had no taste. Good enough to fill you up. You can play lotto and quick pick at the bar. The plus side to this bar is that, you won’t see people with their pants down at their ankles here.

I must update my review to 4 stars. I’m a fan of the Elmwood. I used to hate it – too divey, too neighborhoody, crappy food, bad service. Well, dammit, either I’m growing tender in my older years, or this place got better.
I’ve been here a few times in the past year for lunch with work colleagues. The salads are GOOD. Very large in portion with fresh vegetables, well-​seasoned and generous chicken, and dressing on the side served correctly every time. Sandwiches aren’t bad… reuben is pretty good… and the beer selection rocks. The variety is excellent and it’s cheap. I even went here for dinner a few weeks ago, and I have to conclude that the Elmwood now far outshines the Distillery. It’s not even a contest.
If you’re looking around for a decent pub meal, friendly atmosphere, good beer selection at a decent price — the Elmwood succeeds.

Food can be hit our miss… I ordered simple french onion soup and it was luke warm felt they microwave the soup and then slapped a piece of cheese on it and then put it back in the microwave, they didn’t it under the broiler or salamander. Good deals and strong drinks

Wanted to update since I’ve been back many many times and eaten here quite a bit also. Elmwood Inn serves decent «pub» like food. The burger and nachos are particular highlights, and I’ve heard from others that the wings are really satisfying.
The bartending staff is always very warm and welcoming. Sometimes the servers seem a little overwhelmed which can make your service a little slow, but just sit back, watch some TV, enjoy your beer, and enjoy the company.
It’s a great place to hang out with some friends for beers on weeknights or weekends.

Came here with a big group ~10 people. Seated promptly even though our reservation we showed up an hour before our reservation. Staff was very friendly and service was quite well. Food wise, prices looked reasonable. A little on the high side for any kind of seafood.
Can’t speak for other people in our group, but the turkey bacon club was quite nicely done. Turkey was moist and bacon was crispy with just the right amount of sauce. Hard to mess up, but nicely done.
A friend had the Italian soup and it looked pretty disgusting like it was storebought with the classic rounded sausages.
Not a fan of the homemade chips. Some pieces done just right and some overfried. Also very greasy; one piece was like eating a piece of fried butter.
Had the carrot cake for desert, it was okay. Frosting a bit too sweet and cake more on the heavy side.
Overall, food — 3 stars, service — 4

Went there for lunch Thursday, first time there but I heard some good reviews so I was eager to eat. Ordered a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, and that was probably the best part of my meal. that and the bartenders service was great.
Ordered the flank steak dinner for 18.99. I ordered the flank medium it came out medium well covered in bbq sauce with sautéed peppers. It comes with 2 sides I chose the cream of broccoli as one of them and it was good. The other side was mashed potatoes which were clearly over microwaved, you know when you have a hard brownish crust around the side of the potatoes. So I just ate the inner part of the mashed potatoes and my overly cooked steak which was not bad but for that cut of steak you don’t really want it that done.
Overall I would have to say for one of the higher priced entrées on the menu they need to do better…

Went here for dinner. I’m giving it 3 stars because I ordered the crab bisque and the crab was not real crab, but the gummy — cheap fake crab. If it’s a special on the menu, it better be special. It was not.
The service was great, but it wasn’t that busy for an evening dinner, and the crowd is slightly older. Not a bad thing, but I felt a little out of place. I won’t go out of my way to eat here, but since it’s close to my office, I feel like it’s still a decent option.

The food is not great and the beer is expensive. The people are always friendly and I like the atmosphere.

Atmosphere — a little dark and divey, although nice to have a fire in the fireplace. Fish fry with beer batter very tasty, as was the burger, I am told by my husband. I probably wouldn’t go out of my way to return, but if I were in the neighborhood, I’d go back

I accompanied a couple colleagues to the Elmwood Inn for lunch. They frequent this spot. If you did not know a restaurant was inside you would likely pass right by it.
I liked this spot. I like the televisions, the service, the quaintness and the patrons.
The service was on the spot and the menu contained a variety of offerings.
I had a Turkey sand which on Rye. It may be one of the best sandwiches I’ve had in a long time.
I’ll certainly be returning for more.

I have enjoyed this place quite a bit in the past. Recently I have found insects in the food, been very unimpressed by quality of meals, and my girlfriend got very sick from the food. The rewards program is very enticing but ends up not being worth it unless your focusing on drinking. Even drinking is not great here as I get a very Towny bar feel from the people at the bar. Gave it multiple chances but I can’t do it anymore, it’s been nice elmwood.

Sometimes, you really just want a burger. And I did.
At the same time, I had some serious criteria overall. I didn’t want a joint that was like a «good time sports bar!» (i.e. MacGregor’s or The Distillery); I wanted some place more pubby (like Donnelly’s or the Tap) and I wanted a bar or pub that had a decent beer selection.
And here’s where I can say Unilocal!was a factor in my choice. I’d completely forgotten about the Elmwood Inn.
My wife and I hit the place up this past Saturday night, and it wasn’t terribly busy (we went around 5:30−6pm). We sat in the bar area, since we’re just cool like that, and started off with a couple of beers. Unfortunately, the keg was flat or the line was off, as both of them (Smithwick’s) arrived flat. The upside? This was the only low point of our experience there.
We shared one of the combo app platters — which was nothing ground-​breaking, but satisfied our craving for fried food — and then I opted for the World Series burger while the Mrs. had the steak salad. The steak salad was huge, definitely an «entrée portion,» and my burger was exactly what I wanted. It was cooked correctly, loaded with bacon and A1, and hit the spot. Plus, there were more than enough draft beers to keep me happy — and to help me get more badges on my Untappd app, since I am a complete nerd when it comes to that. The whole time we were there, music was provided by 96.5 WCMF (not a live dj, they just had the radio on) and it was mellow.
Now, the question’s going to pop up – why not the Distillery? As other reviewers have mentioned, it’s down the street on Mt. Hope… as is the Bunga Burger Bar. To be honest, we wanted less noise and less television. It’s one of the features of the Tap & Mallet that we like — no tv altogether — although I’m cool with a couple. I’m not anti-​sports bar, I just knew that for a quieter evening of good food and beers, I’m happier with a place like the Elmwood, and I would go back.
This is not to say it wouldn’t be busier/​louder on other nights or at other times, especially so in the bar (I’d guess), but I have a hunch it’d be acceptable by anyone’s standards.

Visited in September of 2013. Food is not very good. The sevice was terrible. We were asked to leave because they needed the table. The manager was unhelpful and insincere and when I emailed the owner I got no response.

Classic U of R joint– a good place to grab a drink and some basic bar food. The service is very good and atmosphere is not bad. Nothing really stands out at Elmwood Inn though. Distillery is right down the block and prefer that for wings, beer and atmosphere. If Elmwood Inn was in a different location maybe I’d think different?

I just had a fabulous evening here tonight, bellied up to the bar with my husband and some friends. The atmosphere is very laid back… it wasn’t too loud by any means but there was a good crowd for a Monday night… and we were able to carry on a conversation without screaming. Yes, I am old and don’t feel like fighting over the crowd to talk.
I was happy to see some of my favorite draft beers… and a great menu… I had a Sam Adams Cherry Wheat and a Smithwicks… with a Beet Salad– as I am in love with beets and this salad did not disappoint… and a plate of Fried Zuchini Chips to share. My husband got the Turkey Rueben and we both were really happy with our meals.
Great evening and we will surely head back!

I’ve only been here once… but when I went… it was MAGICAL. When I say magical, I don’t mean all good magic. Now that I think of it, magical isn’t the best word– interesting is a better fit.
What interested me you may ask?
–A guy getting the largest portion of macaroni salad I’ve ever seen.
–A bartender named Harrison who didn’t respond to his name being called
–Mysterious red envelopes given out to guest in February to open in April for a deal
–THE $ 3.75 WELL DRINKS
–the $ 3.50 BEERS (nice draft selection too)
The list goes on and on…
I’m not foolish enough to think the food here is magical. Nope. But I bet it’s fine. This is a great place to grab a beer and a convo with some random people (who may or may not be eating mac salad)

Love this place. Very good beer selection and always has specials. Good, mixed crowd of students, hospital employees and other locals. Food is ok, which is the reason I only gave 4 stars, but otherwise, think this place is great!
