let’s be clear. the food &ONLY the food got the 4 stars here. was visiting from Cleveland OH for the lilac festival in Rochester Ny & the sandwiches here came highly recommended. cannot complain a bit about the food. the roast beef was to die for. also got a 9″ club which also did not disappoint. it was not crowded at all but the service we got was HORRIBLE. we were made to feel totally unwelcome & almost like we were bothering the gal that helped us. I wanted so badly to make a comment but figured best to not anger further the person handling our food. she is one person that should not be working w/the public since quite honestly she SUCKS at it. we were gonna eat in but did not want to be in her presence any further so we opted instead to take the sandwiches back to our hotel to enjoy

3rd time I’ve come here as I live in Colorado and have family here. I love this place, nothing like it in my state! This particular time the sandwich was great but the service was sub par to say the least. Lucky timing for us because our sandwiches were the last roast beef for the night with around an hour and a half left to business close. Watched 2 people walk out after us. No wheat bread, settled for white. My sister in law asked for toasted buttered, which the response by the woman was«the bread is pretty hot, are you sure you want it toasted?» Next the woman making the sandwich placed onions on the sandwich seconds after my sister in law said no onions. To make amends she picked off«as many» onions as she could. Thirty minutes till close now and they seem to be out of most basic ingredients. Come here for the great delicious sandwiches, not for the great customer service. Hopefully if I can come back in another year some things will change. 3 stars because the sandwiches are that good!

Every time I am in town I have to go at least once. Its all about the bread fresh, it is soft with a lovely almost bagel like crust with out being too chewy, perfect for a sub. I would say it is the best bread that I have every had for a sandwich. They have day old bread for a $ 1 a bag. The deli meats are good quality and prices are reasonable. This is what a sub shop should be simple, fresh, good quality and no gimmicks.

Best subs in town and I’ve tried a lot of them during 20 years of lunches here. They have the best roast beef and the freshest bread. You have to order Bernie’s favorite: smoked turkey to go with your roast beef. They put your meat on a wonderful bed of shaved lettuce and wafer thin tomatoes and onions(if you want — and I do). One day when I invited a friend to try out this flavor fest(with a skeptical eye) he admitted he was surprised it was so good. He said«Apparently they slathered this sub with ‘yummy’ all over». I think that sums it up. Service is good and usually quick, though lunch can have lines(even with 6 people working the counter). The only reason the rating is 4 instead of 5 is their rendition of the 50s classic drive-up style doesn’t work for me and it’s a bit run down now. The parking lot has pot holes, etc. Feel free to take your food to go. :-) P. S. Lots of military and cops go there for some reason. I think that’s a good sign — they have tried lots of sub places too and know the best.

Tough call! I really like their bread especially since it was buttered and toasted. They have this cool toaster that is outfitted with a roll that butters up the bread before it is placed into the toaster. Nice! The quality was fine, their service was very good, their prices are reasonable. What’s tough for me is to compare Amiel’s with Dibella’s and Pelligrino’s. I have been going to Dibella’s for years — since it was one small shop. And even though something’s changed as they grew into a chain, I still like Dibella’s. I like the variety of food at Pelligrino’s. They are very innovative. So, while Amiel’s is not bad, I still prefer the other two better. That’s probably more of a personal preference. Enjoy Amiel’s buttered up bread!

We’ve stopped here a few times to grab a couple subs and they are pretty good. The staff is reasonably friendly and the prices ate decent.

Unfortunately this place keeps getting sued by patrons that slip on their way in and out of the restaurant, or the bathrooms. It’s obvious that these lawsuit-happy locals are not really hurt. They are simply making«Amiel» out of minor injuries. So sad. What to get: Roast Beef on a sub with everything, toasted buttered, including peppers, dressing, etc. What else: Dan Akroyd’s worn underwear. If it were called Apiel’s then it would lobby for Death Row inmates to be «let off» and it would help them«get off» in all kinds of ways. At the very least it would extend their lives by 10 years using a series of apiels to delay the execution. By the way I am very opposed to the death penalty, for the record. I feel that nobody has the right to take anybody’s life. This place has some of the better sandwiches in Rochester. As long as you eat it right when you get it, the Roast Beef sandwich will rock your world. It’s what Arby’s always wanted to be, until it realized it was a national chain and simply couldn’t be. If it were dirt cheap, then it could be renamed Adiel’s for all the great diels you can get. Oh wait, it is dirt cheap. So many it should be. But let’s tell you more about this sandwich. The Roast Beef on the sandwich is good, the bread is excellent, toasted buttered improves it, and it’s all the bits and bobs that they put on your sandwich(lettuce tomato onions dressing oil peppers cheese mustard) that really makes it work. It’s an explosion of flavours in your mouth, kind of like what used to happen when I’d pleasure my ex boyfriend down south. If it were Ahiel’s, then it would be a bad guy on McMahon’s wrestling show. I wonder which one is the bad guy these days. Speaking of which(sarcasm), I want to mention The Rock in this review. I wonder how I can work him in there(I’m usually very good at working things in there, if you know what I mean). The service is excellent and fast, much like a girl I know in Rochester, and the prices are rock bottom even moreso than Dwayne Johnson’s protein powder(sarcasm). Get on down here and give it a try if you haven’t. Don’t expect culinary genius, just expect a very delicious juicy sandwich that will make you wonder why you ever entered an Arby’s. Unless you have never entered Arby’s in which case I congratulate you, friend. And if it were Afiel’s then every employee would cop afiel of every customer as they walk through the door looking for Adiels, leading to even more lawsuits, molestation and harrassment and making Amiels out of the harmless molestation, meaning the employees would be Ahiels, and that in turn would lead to imprisonment, which would lead to Apiels, which would tie everything together perfectly, except for The Rock. Hmm. Has The Rock ever molested anyone?

I love Amiels. Absolutely love them. Fresh made bread, then they butter it and toast it to perfection without burning it. They use only the best quality ingredients and their sweet peppers are to die for. They may not have a huge selection of extras like olives and banana peppers… Etc. but Amiels has been doing it the same way with the same great ingredients forever and Its perfect the way it is. I for one would be disappointed if they ever changed. Whenever I come home to Rochester, Amiels is my first stop! P. s. I tried to buy a jar of the sweet peppers and they said no. Amiel, if you’re reading this — let’s negotiate!

Hands down by far the best Sub place on the planet! We are very excited to share this AMAZING Sub place with everyone that loves delicious subs but also wants high quality meat in their Sub! The Sub people are determined to please you and are very friendly! Hats off to the owner and the staff! The sub rolls are always fresh out of the ovens and still warm! Other sub places may be slightly less expensive, but their contents are horrible in taste and quality compared to AMIELS! For example: Arby’s, Subway, and Debellas all are places that we would NEVER go again!

Love the old fashioned diner vibe! I’ve driven by this place so many times growing up but went there for the first time tonight with my parents after it was recommended to us. Three sizes for subs: small, large and jumbo(which is cut into 4 pieces). They always offer butter and toasting the bread. Combos come with ½ a large sub(which was quite filling for me), soup and a drink. Not the best sub I’ve ever had in my life but it was good. Also the staff was very nice. Overall, the best things for me were: Atmosphere and staff. As for the actual product: Subs were good but short of great. However, I should note that I did not try their signature roast beef because my mom is a are vegetarian… and that could have made all the difference. I did enjoy their American-Swiss cheese blend though.

These are the best subs in Rochester in my own personal opinion. Their meat is also very fresh which makes for a great experience as well. You can get the bread buttered and/or toasted(which I always do — but light butter) and that is something unique to them(I believe). I have never had a bad sub here and never had anything that didn’t taste incredibly fresh. Seating can be a bit tricky depending on the day and the line can be incredibly long depending on the time you are in there as well, but even with a long line I have never felt that I was waiting an inordinate amount of time.

I find it very hard not to stop at Amiel’s for REAL roast beef. I’ve had their original Beef-A-Miel, which is simply beef on a roll, but of amazing quality. The sub is a little more diverse in that it begs for condiments such as lettuce, tomato, onion. In both cases, the buttered & toasted roll and the salt and pepper seasoning add a lot. Now for some history. I believe I first had a similar sandwich at Mike’s subs in Schenectady in the late 60s. It was called a Neba and tasted just as good. I don’t know if the two chains were related, but the Neba was reincarnated by the Mr. Subb chain. Amiels has perfected it for the Rochester area. I think there is some family connection! Oh, yes, there are many other subs at Amiel’s, but the beef is the best. Counter staff is well-organized in that the person you order from has full responsibility to make your order(not a production line like Subway). You are not held up by someone ahead of you with a big order. Plenty of help for the lunch hour rush. And friendly.

This place is like Dibella’s meets Johnny Rockets. The layout is similar to Dibella’s(where you order a base sub and add condiments, followed by paying at a counter encased with cookies and chips) but the vibe is 60’s/70’s diner, complete with tiled walls and fluorescent signs. The bread on my hot chicken sub was amazing. It was soft and warm, perfectly cradling the hot chicken and melty cheese. The cookie was good, as well, but not quite on par with Dibella’s offerings. I would definitely go back next time I’m in the area!

Extremely solid food! Great roast beef, and very friendly service. I always passed by this sub joint but never had a chance to stop by. I’ve heard good things about this place for a while now so I decided to stop in one morning with a friend for some lunch. The moment I walked in, I was greeted by a charming retro-diner décor, and I am a huge fan of how it looks. Neon lights everywhere, it’s like I walked into a 50s diner! I stepped up to the ordering counter, and proceeded to order two sandwiches, a small-sized sub of their signature roast beef with their special sauce(a sort-of Italian dressing) and a small-sized gyro sub with tzatziki sauce. I was a bit discouraged to see that the gyro strips came out of a box from Chicago, but that’s okay. All of it was very delicious, and I definitely like it better than any of the other local sub joints(move over DiBella’s!). My one complaint may be that they are a bit stingy with the meat(I’m used to piled-high sandwiches from NYC). The prices were okay, and I’ll definitely come back for lunch.

This place really surprised me — in a good way! I’d always driven right by Amiel’s, not really knowing if I wanted to take a chance on it, until last week. I was missing out! The place itself is a little kitschy and old-fashioned, built in the style of an old-school diner/shake shop. But the roast beef sandwiches are great! We got the Beef-Amiel with American cheese sauce — tender beef, creamy cheese, round roll. My only complaint is that the beef was under-salted. It needed some sort of kick to bring the real flavors out. Maybe I’m just used to a Kimmelweck roll! We also got a small cold cut sub, which was similar in portion size to Dibella’s and, honestly, just as good. The mustard was awesome. The place was quiet but not empty and the service was very prompt. I’d definitely go back to Amiel’s again!

It’s been a while since I visited Amiels; I’m glad I checked them out again. Meals in the past there had been fair to middling, and so it has not been on my short list of places to visit. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped in for a convenient meal. I noticed a few changes to the better. Like Subway & DiBella’s, Amiels bakes their rolls on site now. I took the bait and ordered a medium roast beef sub. Wow! I can safely say that I liked the roast beef more than DiBella’s Red Osier sub. Prices were reasonable, and the atmosphere was pleasant. Free refills on a fixed price soda cup(in store) and good food. With DiBella’s now down the road, Amiels should have the sub market cornered!
