A fabulous resource. Highly recommended. During our travels, we sometimes skip the tourist centers at our destinations. Why? Because much can be learned via the Internet prior to arrival. We don’t want anything to interfere with our time on location for good photographic shots. Having said that, this tourist center is worth a visit before you go anywhere else in the Roanoke area. It’s located in the old, industrial era train station in downtown Roanoke a few blocks from the city market. If you’re there at 0800, 1200, 1230, and 1500, you’ll hear the old steam engine whistle blow demarking the beginning, middle, and end of the railroad workers day. The O. Winston Link(paid entrance) and a free museum are co-located. The staff are friendly and helpful and a great resource to identify places to go and things to do – many that are not obvious.
