The food at this place is going downhill considerably in the last several years the people at the register have rude bad attitudes not recommended for a good time.

The Philly Steak Sandwich was great! There was really only one thing that was peculiar about this place, we did had to seat ourselves and we didn’t have a waitress/waiter. It was very awkward how we had to wait for a table to be cleaned and then jump on it! What was even crazier was how we had to do all this in the midst of a crowd that had absolutely no clue who was first or last. Do take out, maybe.

Where do I start. I had the turkey sub add slaw. The sub was well under 10 bucks and bigger than my forearm. It came warm with melty provolone and a toasted bun. I could barely finish half. It also came with a Delish dill pickle — topping off the perfect ny deli style. My dad and I also shared a piece of NY cheesecake which was also huge and so so good. If you’re looking for fancy décor or brand new furnishings. This isn’t the spot for you. If you want delicious, straight forward food with friendly servers then definitely go here — often. You and your wallet won’t regret it!

We’ve been eating here for years. So very delicious. Subs are huge. Leftovers are even more delicious the next day, if that’s even possible.

One of Roanoke’s best restaurants; dine in and especially carry out. Not the greatest service last time we went, but that’s not why I love this place. Sandwiches piled with meat and cheese for a great price. Very cost effective. Classic New York delicatessen style restaurant.

I’ve been eating from The New Yorker since I was but a wee lad. Over the years in my many visits, I have seen the food quality(and service) wax and wane and so I stopped by recently to see what the current state was. Not much has changed here in décor. Like a time capsule of the 1970’s! But getting past the limited ambiance, The New Yorker is still a good Roanoke standard in deli eats. My waitress was mildly polite without seeming rushed and I ordered my usual Kosher Klub sandwich minus the dressing. About 7 minutes later, my meal arrived complete with somewhat stale potato chips and the obligatory dill pickle spear. As I munched into the sandwich, a few things came to note. One, over the years the meat portion has significantly diminished as has the general preparation of the sandwich. The meat was sloppily placed and although it still retains the exceptional taste and quality of prime deli meat, I couldn’t help but think how much better the sandwich would have been with just a few more moments of preparation and a bit more of the ingredients. The hot peppers were crudely heaped in the middle and the sandwich was just a bit of a haphazard mess. Gone are the days you could make two meals of the sandwich, replaced by a decent filling meal, nonetheless satisfying. The pickle spear was crisp, but sadly, served not cold but at room-temperature. The New Yorker is still a good value, but one can’t help but lament the days gone by of the higher quantity and quality old establishment. Just a few tweaks and this place could easily return to its old standards. But until that day, one might do just as well to buy the deli cuts by the pound at the in-store deli counter and take them home to prepare a truly worthy sandwich.

I’ve been eating subs there for 30+ years, there used to be 3 slices of sub bread cause of all the meat, slowly that and the meat disappeared. They barely put 2 slices of onions and the slaw is awful now. A half used to fill me up, I just ate a whole one and I’m still hungry. What a shame, they lost a very long time loyal patron, I’ll never go back.

I’m a jersey girl recently transplanted in Roanoke and so happy to find this place!!! The rare roast beef is amazing. I ate half and I’m stuffed to the gills. It could easily be shared between two people. The service was great. Our waitress was nice and even brought over a pitcher of soda for us. The only downside was the cheesecake was mediocre at best. It tasted like a no bake cheesecake. Definitely not authentic NY style cheesecake. I’d recommend skipping the desert and just getting the delicious sandwiches. We will definitely be eating here again soon.

Fantastic value with great deli food! But, the fact that they don’t take credit/debit cards lends itself to and heir of illegitimacy. They could easily raise the price of the food to cover the cost and it would still be an amazing value.

I always get a torpedo(smaller version of the submarine) or the italian. Ask for it «burnt» to get your meat nicely grilled or else it’s just warmed through. The subs are usually good but occasionally not cooked enough for my liking. If nothing else, get the cheesecake! It is to die for!

Two stars because the folks behind the counter were nice. Terribly disappointed with my sandwich here. Ordered an Italian hoagie. The american cheese is the processed yellow cheese with a plastic consistency. I asked for the sandwich with mayo and mustard. I was given mustard packets on the side. I didn’t see or taste any mayo. I also asked for oil and vinegar on the hoagie. I was given a packet of ken’s balsamic vinegar salad dressing on the side. Granted I did ask for them to toss it into the oven for a few seconds so maybe that’s why they left it dry. Either way it wasn’t that appealing and I chose to dispose of the hoagie and eat somewhere else. Cash only is whatever, but it’s 2015.

What can I say. The New Yorker is a Roanoke Classic. The sandwiches are simply outstanding. My favorite is the Submarine with Slaw. It is huge so if you order it you had better bring your appetite. Lunch time is always busy but if they turn table pretty quick so any wait time is short. One important thing you should know before visiting is this is a cash only establishment. For me, a meal at The New Yorker is only about one thing on the menu — the torpedo sub sandwich. I’ll be honest, the description on the menu of the torpedo is nothing special. Actually, it doesn’t even sound good. It’s a sandwich with bologna, salami, sharp cheese, slaw, onions, and peppers. I substitute the onions and peppers for tomato. When I described this sandwich to my wife, she said it sounded gross. I get it. It’s definitely not gross. It’s piled high with meat and cheese that is then toasted in the oven. Toasting the sandwich gives the meat and cheese this wonderful crust, almost like bark on a smoked piece of pork or beef ribs. The cheese bubbles up all around the meat and the flavors cook together. Then, it’s topped with a generous amount of sweet coleslaw. Add a couple slices of fresh tomato and you’re all set. Eating a torpedo is quite an undertaking. It requires both hands and your full attention. It’s one of those sandwiches that you can’t put down after you take your first bite because it’ll fall apart as soon as you try to pick it up again. It’s not an issue because it’s tough to put down once you take the first bite anyway. This massive sandwich is about $ 5.50. Believe it or not, the torpedo is actually the smaller version of a sandwich called the submarine. Torpedo: Submarine. Get it? I once ordered a submarine thinking I could eat the whole thing. Three days later… I still hadn’t finished it. A torpedo is plenty to eat. I have friends who order different things from The New Yorker, but it’s never been interesting enough to me to sway from my normal order. Order the torpedo! Full speed ahead!

The sub’s here are always awesome, never a let down. I prefer the Italian sub, a lot of people like the submarine sub which has bologna, not my favorite meat for a good sub. The bread, lettuce & tomatoes are always fresh. Plus they actually have hot mustard & hot peppers, two of my favorites.

First off, make sure you bring cash! I had what they called a torpedo here and I was not impressed. The first time they brought the sandwich out, it was burnt to heck and the waitress even said she questioned herself whether or not to bring it out. The second round the bread was soggy from where they did not toast the sub enough from all the grease. I didn’t even bother to finish my meal and went elsewhere to I cannot say a lot about the rest of their menu. Our waitress was a bit of a smart alec as well which did not help the overall experience at all. Will not be coming back here ever again.

This is a Day Before Thanksgiving tradition for my husband and I, and every single year we always say the same thing — we need to do this again. We always get the sub with slaw, no onion. One can feed both of us very well, but we get two and eat the other half for breakfast the next morning. They keep well and 30 seconds in the microwave is just perfect. We also get 2 slices of blueberry cheesecake. It’s REAL New York Cheesecake, with the sour cream topping you can’t find anywhere else in Roanoke. Don’t get anything else on the menu. Seriously, trust me. This sub is perfection. The cheesecake is too. Someone below mentioned they only take cash. Their review was back in March so I’m not sure if they didn’t take cards then, but they do now.

The subs are huge!!! Being a New Yorker, I thought it was cute how they named this deli… But, as I told my fellow dining mates… All New York delis make their sammies different… so the size and preparation is quite misleading. That being said, their sandwiches are delicious. I enjoyed every last bite of my Rare Roast beef sandwich with a side of slaw and pickle. It was a perfect ending to the day after hiking and seeing the Roanoke Star.
