My son and I tried this place for the first time on a Friday night. We ordered the ‘bottlecaps’ which are sliced and fried pieces of red and green jalapeño peppers. Definitely recommended! My son had the frog legs and I had the fried shrimp. The flavor for both was outstanding, although the shrimp were a tad small. The cole slaw was much better than expected and included two sliced pickles — sorry, I just have such low expectations for restaurant cole slaw now. What struck me as original about Happy Trails: 1. They have an indoor smoking section. I don’t remember the last time I saw one of those. Sadly, the outdoor dining is also smoking. 2. The owner, and most of the staff, knew everyone in the place — and knew that we were there for our first time. They didn’t treat us differently, and I was surprised to see everyone get the same level of friendly, personal service. Why I’m not giving them 5-stars — they’re only open a few days per week. Otherwise, this is the the, ‘must eat’ spot on Highway 431 from Auburn to Oxford!
