At my last job, my company hosted a weekend volunteer event for employees and their families(e.g., the kiddos) at the Red Wolf Sanctuary in Rising Sun, IN. It’s not a bad drive from Cincinnati(1 hour) — however, your GPS will likely go wack and take you up someone’s personal driveway, since the sanctuary is obviously in a heavily wooded area, off the beaten path. Temperatures were hot as hell and muggy the day that we went, and depending on schedule/tour events, you will probably want to plan accordingly for food/water arrangements(the company had already planned a lunch of Subway and brought a cooler of bottled waters, since there are no vending machines or nearby places to purchase food). There is thankfully a [human] dwelling with AC, clean restrooms, etc.(and caged wolf puppies, if you are so lucky to get to see them!). We parked, had a short-ish tour of the rescued bears(CUTE but definitely not wanting to get cuddled), with«Paul», our tour guide, and unpaid volunteer for 40+ years at the sanctuary. The sanctuary was also staffed with a fantastic group of young people, volunteers and employees alike, who were polite, informative and modulated but enthusiastic about their roles. Our group took a short hike up the trail to where we built the frame for a fox den(and also got to take a peek at the foxes in the neighboring den!). We took a break for lunch, got to ooh and ahhh over the cute gray wolf puppies and foxes(adorable), and learned about the type of donations and tours that the staff promotes(certain brands of dog food; raw, uncured meats; etc.). Tour prices are as follows: Adult — $ 20; Teenage — $ 10; Groups of 25 or greater $ 7; Child — $ 5(these fees are very reasonable for the amount of time that the staff spends on the tours, and since RWS is a nonprofit that runs on private donations). No tour minimum, as long as there is adequate notice to make sure that a staff member is available(they will do a tour for 1 person). I highly recommend RWS, it’s a good experience for the family and individual, and a great cause!
