Great little local grocery store. Excellent deals on produce, butcher and Deli meats. You are somewhat better off doing some of your shopping elsewhere, as some of their brand name merchandise can be a little pricey. But if you shop the off brands like Centrella you will find lots of bargains. I love Colleen and Mary, the two ladies usually working the registers, they’re very friendly and easy going. The owners and a few others can seem a little grumpy at times, but they are good people who do a lot for the local food pantry and throw Halloween parties for the kids every year.

Vans is a great small town general type store. It’s got a little bit if everything, no frills kinda place. Love this little store. Also Jewel is 10 mins down road if they don’t have what your looking for. For those who say prices high… BTW some prices are higher because Mom and Pop shops can’t complete with Big chain stores that buy product in higher qtys. Called MKTG101 folks!!!

I live in Richmond, unfortunately, and I am sometimes forced to shop here just out of sheer convenience. I have never seen so many miserable geriatric women gathered in one area in my life. Who can blame them though? I would be miserable too if I had to work for the owner of this dump. Jewel in Spring Grove is not too far for the advantage of avoiding this place. 99% of the goods on sale here are grossly overpriced, and by grossly I’m talking $ 12.00 for a block of Velveeta cheese, just as an example. Take a look around, you’ll see what I mean. Getting back to the owner,(I guess his name is Tom) holy cow is he a mean looking disgruntled ugly person. I am a 38 year old man and haven’t been followed around a store like that since I was 10. I guess he thinks everyone is out to steal his overpriced cheese or something. If I had to give you one reason not to shop here it is defintely the people. Tom is billed as a pillar of the community but all I can see is a slumlord grocery store operator. And all the women are just mean mean mean nasty nasty and ugly. If terrible customer service doesn’t bother you though, consider the unsanitary conditions. If you have any question about how well this place is upkept just look at the ceiling when you walk in. I imagine if such a visible area of this store is left in that condition the not so visible areas are even worse. Just do yourself and your family a favor and don’t shop here. It just fails at everything, really. The money you will save on cheese alone will cover your gas to get to Jewel. Don’t support unfriendly, unethical slimy business owners. Would give zero stars if I could.

Love this place. Prices a little high but worth not spending your life in a checkout lane at Jewel or Walmart.

Great selection of deli meat and friendly service. It’s nice to see a family business that places the customer first still thriving. The store has a great selection of products and the prices are very reasonable. I will definitely be back!

Not a huge produce section, but great prices. Deli is nice, small, but has all the standard items. nice selection of meat. Nice local market.

I have recently started going into van’s and have been very pleasantly surprised by the quality of produce and meat. prices and quality of both are better than Jewel in spring grove, where i find the produce to be hit or miss. usually run in for meat and produce weekly for the last six months and have not had any issues.

The ‘big guy’ is Tom the owner. A surly individual if there ever was one. I only shop at Van’s for milk, and that is only if there is a dire need as I don’t want to give him any of my money if I can help it. I can’t say how I know, but I do have inside knowledge that the deli area is filthy-disgusting. The Health Dept comes in and he does the bare minimum to meet the immediate requirements and then once he passes, he slides back into filth. I know that the employees are asked to remove expiration dates from shelf goods with rubbing alcohol. I was running in for milk the other day and thought I would buy some avocadoes and brussel sprouts for us as well. The sprouts were bad-pink inside after cooking-and my former farmer hubby says they are rotten then. Avocadoes were spoiled within a day. Whenever I buy something other than a routinely cycled item [like milk] it is gross. Just don’t go there. Jewel isn’t that far, and there is that little grocery store in Genoa City too. Van’s is a super dump. Smells like poop, and the owner is a meanie. Oh! And in the winter he won’t pay to sprinkle salt on the parking lot so it’s a death ice rink. Lovely.
