First time ever here. Tried some of everything. Really really loved the chicken pot pie. Fried chicken was juicy and delicious. So sad that they are closing. I think with a better location this place could really have been something special.

I am a fan, but their business model is suffering. The food is delicious, but for the price, the portions are not great. Frequent traffic is a problem because most folks don’t want to drop $ 8 for a small BBQ, greens and a little slaw. Drop the prices a bit, keep the portions small and watch the traffic increase. It’s not the food that’s holding them back, it’s the perception of value. I truly hope they can make it! Nice folks.

Way better chicken than KFC or any of those fast food places. The side dishes are definitely home made and the biscuits are made from scratch. Definitely a welcome addition to the community.

I always catch them when they are mobile. DELICIOUS fried chicken! I think they put rosemary in the breading… and various other spices. It is awesome. Great mac n cheese, homemade biscuits, and I could eat their collards all day. Looking forward to seeing you guys out again this spring!

Dixie Chicken is a welcome addition to the forest hill neighborhood. The chicken(i prefer thigh) was moist and tender. The breading was crispy and just right. I thought the prices were a little high, and some of the sides were a little lackluster. the limeade was the best though. If i could change anything about this place– it would be have a couple tables for eating, and clean up the condiment bar a little better and make sure it is stocked– a few times i have gone they have been out of basics like straws. I think they’ll get there though– and i look forward to going back some more!

My husband and I wanted desperately to love this place. We try to support local businesses as much as possible but unfortunately, this place didn’t live up to our expectations. We came on a Wed. afternoon and the place was pretty dead. I guess we missed the lunch rush. We decided to order the drumstick and thigh combo with mac and cheese, sweet potato soufle and something else. I can’t remember. Anyways, we were expecting hot, crispy, juicy fried chicken and instead we got a semi-warm dried piece of chicken. Maybe the guy didn’t want to turn on the fryer since it was just the two of us… or maybe he felt that we’d be fine with mediocre chicken. Either way it was a huge let down. The most cooking I saw the owner do was to pop everything in the microwave. I’m talking the chicken… the sides… the biscuit… EVERYTHING. I thought maybe this was some secret way to prepare good chicken… but who was I kidding. This was a joke. Honestly, if someone comes in and spends $ 20 for two combo meals you would at least expect some effort. But to microwave a $ 10 combo in front of me… please…I’m pretty sure I could’ve taken it home to do that myself. Granted the flavor of the chicken was ok. The flavor didn’t penetrate into the meat. The sweet potato soufle was great. My husband liked the biscuit and the mac and cheese was heavy and cheesy… just like the Southerners like it. But as for whether it was worth the cost… I doubt it. You’d probably have better bang for your buck and better quality at Popeyes.

Classic Southern cooking to take out. Freshly fried chicken, BBQ, delicious sides. I like the Fried Chicken Combo — 2 pcs dark chicken cooked to perfection by Todd, cole slaw, the best mac & cheese ever, and a flaky heavenly biscuit that cries out for honey. The deviled eggs are very tasty with just enough sweet pickle.(I said it was Classic.) If you need comfort food, try the chicken and dumplings. They serve locally roasted coffee from The Lamplighter and make fresh-squeezed lime & lemon ades. I am now a regular and always get some extra mac and cheese. The lemon pound cake is perfection. The menu says«Featuring Southern Home Cooking Like Your Grandmas Used to Make!» Neither of mine were Southern and I doubt they would have been such good cooks.

Was really excited to try Dixie Chicken due to reviews and I was just plainly satisfied. The main issue is that it is made to order and that can take a while and it is purely carry out with a small parking lot(had to leave someone in the car to wait for a spot). The chicken was moist and flavored well. Good choice of sides. Workers were very friendly and appreciative. I guess just come with expectations in check, order ahead if you know what you want.

Ok, reading the blogs and writes up’s from Style and other mags had my mouth watering. Boy I was so dissapointed. We are in the south and some people don’t know what southern food suppose to taste like or look like! First of all the location is a mess, it’s limited due to sharing with a laundromat and beauty shop. The inside is nothing spectacular, open, dull, and cold looking. The lady that took my order was nice, she spoke as soon as I open the door, the men cooking just look and could care less. I hate going into establishment’s when the owners are rude it says volumes but I went on with my order, otherwise I would have said some chosen words and walked out. I notice the chicken frying but I didn’t smell anything, just a greasy smell, good fried chicken will wake the dead if it’s cooked right with seasoning, this chicken had NONE! I knew then something wasn’t going to taste right, lol. It was crunchy but it had no flavor, I couldn’t understand that. These folks can’t be from the south. The greens were tough and chewy had little flavor with specks of cookin meat here and there. Now I can make a mean mac’n cheese as the saying goes, make you wanna smack yo momma, well their mac’n cheese momma will smack you for making a concoction like that, dry, tasteless and overcook. When you can’t make a simple mac’n cheese time to shut it down for real. My grandson even turned his nose up at it! We devil eggs all the time at my house, where they got these baby eggs from only they can tell you [so small can pop’em in your mouth], no flavor what so ever, kinda sour tasting, no relish, just was missing something, Hellman’s maybe?.. My mom tried the pork belly sandwich, I was praying that it was good I twisted her arm to try this place, well so much for my arm, lol. she said it was the nastiest thing she ever ate. OMG, she took one bite and she was thru. We had the ‘homemade limeade’ offered while we wait, that was some sour stuff, my face was in a knot, lol. It was free what did I expect. So folks don’t stop going to Kentucky fried or Popeyes, or Lee’s, this place is not worth the money or the time trying to find a parking space. It’s over price an getting to much hype for nothing. I need to fix them one of my fried chicken dinners with all the fixings plus dessert [pecan pie, apple pie, sweet potato pie coconut cake and blackberry cobbler] and sweet tea for all yall sweet tea sippin country bumpkin’s, now that’s a SOUTHERNER for ya. Finger licking good… puleeez.

Hot Damn! This is some good chicken. Before this, Lee’s was my go-to spot for chicken, but Dixie is where it’s at. I think what I love most is that it tastes like someone’s family recipe that hasn’t been compromised for commercial success. I think I’ve heard that you can tell great fried chicken by how the breast is cooked, because it has the potential to dry out so quickly, and the breast was by far my favorite piece from Dixie. I know it’s cliché: but really, it’s finger lickin’ good.

I try to wait until I’ve been to a place a few times before writing a review so I can get a good menu sampling, but it’s not necessary with Dixie Chicken. They do chicken and they do chicken extremely well! Thank you fellow Unilocalers for putting these other reviews up or I might not have found them. If I’m ever on death row(No plans to be, but just saying) and get a last meal, this makes my top 3 list. My first visit was solo and I got a chicken combo with a breast. I’ve never seen such a large chicken breast and was filled up after one piece! I had cole slaw and hoppin’ John(a first for this California guy.) the chicken is tender and juicy like I’ve never had before at any restaurant or at home. It’s also made fresh to order, which just adds extra points. My second trip was yesterday and I brought my visiting parents. We knew we didn’t want to cook on this 103 degree day so this decision came easy. We got a couple of 10-piece orders to feed us and the two nieces, and ordered sides of coleslaw and cucumber salad, and a few soft shell crabs. These guys are so friendly and hospitable! Even though they were working and sweating their asses off during this late morning rush, they took time to chat while we were waiting for our chicken. They even gave us a sample of the cole slaw and a couple of extra cups for iced limeade to cool us off while we waited. Definitely appreciated! With food this good and such friendliness I’d love to eat here everyday if I could. It’s the best fried chicken I’ve had… period. We all got filled up and have several leftover pieces to fight over today. If you like fried chicken and genuine southern hospitality, Dixie Chicken deserves your business. Unilocal says I’m a «regular» now and that just makes me smile because it’s happily true.

Fried chicken, BBQ chicken sandwich, green beans, & biscuits were great! Avoid mac & cheese, cole slaw, & mashed potatoes. Lee’s Chicken has some competition now in Richmond!

We ordered 100 pieces of chicken for a party. The chicken was absolutely scrumptious. We ordered both the baked and the fried. Although there are many places to buy good fried chicken in RVA, the baked chicken was the star. It tasted like good barbecued chicken and had a delicous smokey flavor through out. I have gone there since for family dinners. We also tried the maccaroni and cheese. It was cut into brick sized pieces and very filling, but not as flavorful as the mac & cheese I make at home. The plaza where it is located looks dumpy and was full of litter, but do not by deterred by the appearance. GREATCHICKEN is what it’s all about. Yum!

The best fried chicken I have had in. .. ever? I normally don’t eat the skin, because it weirds me out a bit, but this was just too delicious. The chicken was juicy and flavorful, and I don’t know what they bread it with, but it’s pretty amazing stuff. We had potato salad, collard greens and mac & cheese as sides. All great. Biscuits were good. Two bites into our meal, we were talking about when we could go back. My husband picked it up for take-out, and I’m looking forward to going in person myself sometime very soon.

After 3 trips in the past 10 days to Dixie Chicken I continue to be more and more impressed. The fried chicken is delicious and extremely juicy. The side dishes taste like my great grandmother made them. I just finished the pork belly sandwich and it was one of the best things I have tasted in a long time. This is high quality food for a very low price. It is obvious that Todd takes the time to make each dish as flavorful and well seasoned as it can be. You need to eat this food right now!
