This is always been a go to spot for my family. My husband’s family went there for years. Once his grandpa passed away we made it a tradition for every Saturday and Christmas breakfast since they were open. Great portions and even better prices. Even homemade fried pickles on special request. The family is so great with their customers and sweet Starr is the best server in the world. I saw they were shut down until January.

The moment we pulled into the gravel parking lot, we questioned whether or not we should get out. But clearly being a mom and pop shop, and wanting to support local businesses, we walked in considering the fact that Unilocal had never strayed us wrong. We walked in and were greeted by this small Asian women who quickly took our orders and headed back to presumably make our food. As we waited for our orange chicken, we took in the tacky décor, and strange posters, apparent to us that there was no set theme in place, as the items ranged from a poster of an art museum to several oriental fans donning the walls. Our hearts sank when we heard the sound of microwave buttons being pressed, and it only confirmed any hesitation in our concern. Not ten minutes later, in the blistering heat from sitting so close to the kitchen, she came out with our food, and safe to say, we were disappointed with its presentation. Human instinct seems to reign supreme. As soon as we tried the chicken, we were thoroughly weirded out, and it was clear that it was, in fact the chicken that had been in the microwave. It was as if she cooked them American style, close to dipping some chicken strips in sweet and sour sauce. The potatoes and rice weren’t terrible, but slightly bland, and the rolls were the best part of the meal even through their slightly burnt tops. Safe to say, we won’t be going back. It’s not easy to be so hard on a small business that is clearly not doing well, but life is just too short to spend eating bad food.

Great breakfast. Great service. I loved the location. Roadside Mom and Pop with a gravel driveway. Really cute knick knacks on the tables and in a display case. This roadside eatery was clean from top to bottom. The seating is simple but comfortable. The menu was straight and to the point. Pick your meat, style of eggs, type of bread, pancakes or toast, grits/oatmeal/hash browns, and what would you like to drink. They had combos of all kinds to soothe everyone from the hungry man to the picky eater. The cook came out to see if we enjoyed our meal and seemed to listen to our responses. He asked questions, yup he cares about his customers. Cool! He offered us a few samples of potential menu selections for our next visit. Waffles are my next meal addition at The Cookie Monster Café. Their Cook can really cook. He seasons the food just right. You will enjoy yourself. Everything is hot and fresh. The waitress/cashier is a lot of fun. Very sweet. Great place to eat when visiting Richmond. I will be back. The restroom was spotless(a note for the ladies — Smiles)!
