The places is small and a little smokey, but the food is really good! Steak and Al Pastor tacos were amazing.

I love a great hole-in-the-hall authentic Mexican place… I went here having high expectations given the positive reviews. You’ll certainly experience a hole-in-the-wall establishment, unfortunately the food was terribly underwhelming, over-cooked and mushy. We ordered a variety: burritos, tacos, quesadillas. Nothing wowed us to the point of prompting a second visit. I’m sorry. I *really wanted* to like this place.

This place is a destination worthy of crossing the river for. I’ve never been to Mexico, I love taco bell, and I hated La Milpa when I went many years ago. What I do have going for me is I love tacos. I could literally eat them everyday. I was a little afraid that Tacos Mexico would actually be TOO authentic for me based on the rave reviews. However, after checking out a taqueria near my house that was good and not great I decided to make the trek to Jefferson Davis to scratch my taco itch. Ive always disliked soft corn tortillas(yep, I get crispy taco supremes at the bell, don’t hate me) but wanted to try them because of all of the reviews… but what if I hated them? What if they ruined the tacos for me?!? ahhhh… decisions, decisions. Once I got there I decided on 2 flour tacos and 2 corn. I had to try the lengua because I am culinarily adventurous and wanted to try the best version. I also had barbacoa, al pastor, and steak if I remember properly. Every taco was great, I especially enjoyed the lengua. It reminded me of the great fatty bits on a steak(the meat and the fat, not just the fat). What I loved is that after my food was cooked they asked me how I wanted it dressed. They had various cheeses(shredded and crumbled), sour cream, onions, and I think cilantro, lettuce, and tomatoes. I didn’t even feel judged when I asked for sour cream. I loaded up with salsa at the side bar which had jalapenos, limes, radishes, and various salsas. THETACOSWERETHEBOMB! Simple(to me) but very good. Even the corn tortillas were great. The rice and beans were ok… nothing to write home about. All in all the best thing I can say about this place is… I want a taco… now.

The carne asada tacos are the best Mexican food I have eaten in the Richmond area. If you live in town, I assure you the drive out to this place is worth the trip. This is more of a takeout place than a restaurant. You can eat there, but it’s pretty basic. Super delicious!

Amazing food. Feels like I’m eating home cooked Mexican food. My favorite dishes here are the torta and the tacos. Just a word of caution, be ready to have your clothes smell of Mexican food after you’ve been here. But, trust me, this food is worth it!

The tacos are amazing. Sketchy area, sure. But don’t be quick to judge because the Tacos are easily twice as expensive if they’re in Richmond.

These tacos are too legit! I have tried a number of the authentic Mexican spots in town, and this is definitely up there with the very best. The meat tasted so fresh and flavorful. The corn tortilla is the only way to go for me. The service was quick, the ladies were helpful and friendly. They speak some English too because I saw them talking to another customer. Best of all, they keep things very clean. They make the food right in front of you in the blink of an eye too. As for the location, it’s a bit unexpected, not far from the old Kmart on JD, and not exactly fancy at all, nor is the building exterior, but the food is top notch. The inside is pretty simple, 5 or 6 chairs at a bar and about three tables, one of which is larger for 4 or 5 people. I came at 7, and they close at 8, so the tripa(tripe) and barbacoa(type of marinated beef) were out. I got the huarache, which is like a gigantic, elongated sope. It’s a large, thicker, handmade portion of corn masa fried and topped with refried beans, meat, and the works, tomato, cilantro, lettuce, crema. That thing was the bomb! So flavorful! I got the chorizo, and it hit the spot. My husband got the combo with one taco de lengua(beef tongue, the best!) and an al pastor(pork). He said they were both wonderful. He’s all about his tacos de lengua, and this one was on point! To drink I had me some atol, since the horchata was sold out. Atol is like a creamy, hot drink made from milk, corn starch, fresh corn, sugar, and spices. I had never tried atol before, but my Guatemalan friend(shout out to Claudia J., 305!) told me how delicious it was and how long it takes to make at home, so I gave it a shot. SO delish! It was thick, creamy, and peppered with sweet, golden, juicy corn kernels. Sounds weird, but try it! It’s so comforting on a cold day with it’s rich consistency and cinnamon-and-anis-spiced tastiness! $ 3 bucks, and well worth it. It reminded me of Dominican Maizena con leche. Too good! The prices were very affordable, even compared to the other legit Mexican spots. I can’t wait to go back, nor can my husband! This one is definitely a must try! Update: I tried the beef tongue tacos at the end of the week, and they were, hands down, the best beef tongue tacos I’ve had! The chunks were crispy and caramelized on the edges and super tender and juicy, mmm mmm mm! I even made a beef tongue convert of my mom!

Just moved here from Texas and didn’t figure to find decent Mexican restaurants in this area. I was wrong this place is the truth had the tacos de asada, I don’t think I’ve had anything better. You want real legit Mexican food look no further.

Yes, the outside is skeptical and a bit run down, but don’t be fooled. If your wanting some great, fresh, authentic Mexican food, search no more!!! Ordered the #2, under $ 10. Mixed it up with chicken and steak. ONPOINT!!! Going back tomorrow before I fly back to NY. Thanks Unilocalers, led me right again!

I always make sure to hit this spot when I’m back in town. Best tacos around by a mile. It’s a divey place, you go for the food. It’s cheap, delicious, and consistent. Great place for a quick, high-caliber bite at a low price. I love the lengua tacos and their torta, so look out for those if you stop by, but I’ve never had anything bad here, despite touring most of the(admittedly small) menu by this point.

I don’t give out 5 stars easily. But this place earns it! Outside Mexico, these are the best tacos you’ll have. They make their own corn tortillas here and they are so good! Just get the tacos on corn tortillas and wash it down with a made in Mexico Coke. Practice your Spanish for a big smile.

The best tacos I’ve had on the east coast by far. This is a hole in the wall place, but the food is simply delicious. I remember returning from El Paso in May, and didn’t want to eat Mexican food in NC because nothing tasted the same. Thanks to Unilocal,I found this right around the corner form my hotel in Richmond. Whenever I go back to Richmond, I will be stopping by Taco Mexico.

When a True Foodsman craves Mexican food, he doesn’t want some half-assed tacos at Chili’s or Chi-chi’s made by a couple of gringos. He wants the real deal. He wants the true taste of Mexico. He wants the servers to have no idea what he is even saying, so he has to point to his choice on the menu. He wants to wonder if the water is safe, and if he might get kidnapped and held for ransom. He wants to forget where he is, and think he’s in Mexico, because the food is that real. He wants the food to come fresh out the Pueblos. Tacos Mexico gets an easy 5 stars. Although you wont meet any Cartel members here, you will have some of the best damned three tacos of your life for the low price of 8.50. Want to spice it up? Head over to the fixin’s bar and have yourself a fiesta. Want to pass out from a food coma right after you finish? Enjoy your siesta. In addition, Tacos Mexico gets bonus points for having one of the most straight-forward names I’ve ever heard. There’s really no guesswork here amigos. A Bobby Bomen’s 5-Star review goes out to Tacos Mexico for staying authentic in a world full of phony f*ckboys.

I’ve lived right down the street from here my whole life. I remember when it was a what a burger. When this taco place opened a few years ago I didn’t think much of it, because I remember how nasty the what a burger was and I just judged the book by its cover. I was reading multiple reviews on it on Unilocal today and decided to stop there for lunch with my lady. I ordered two pastor tacos and 2 asada tacos and a glass bottle of Sprite. Came up to $ 11 and some change. They prepared the food real quick which was pretty cool. Took them to go and sat at the picnic tables outside and ate. The first bite was magical. The meat was seasoned perfectly. Cooked perfectly. The tortillas were crispy but soft and fluffy at the same time. The pico de gallo was fresh and flavorful. Just completely took me off guard by how good it was. So good. Being the fat kid I am, I went back in and ordered two more tacos. They were equally good. The place doesn’t look like much, but I assure you, as a resident fat kid and food lover of all sorts, it is the bomb diggity. I don’t write reviews. I have ADHD and I can’t pay attention enough to do it but this designated a review from me. I even told m’lady as I was chowing down«This is getting a Unilocal review. Dear God.» 5 stars, definitely. Probably going back tomorrow. Maybe twice. I love tacos.

Small authentic shop about 15 minutes from downtown. The food is not super fresh; I had a feeling some ingredients were sitting around but the meat was really well seasoned and my tacos tasted great. I had the al pastor and barbacoa. My dinner companions both had enchilada platters and ate their plates clean. There are 2 tables and window seating. One complaint is that at the time there did not seem to be any free water(no fountain drinks) so I got a bottled drink as did pretty much everyone there and it felt wrong to just throw all those bottles away. I wish there was recycling and ended up bringing my bottle home.
