YUM! If you want a unique twist to Mexican desserts this is your place. I’ve had the pepperjack/guava empanada, guava cheesecake, diablo cookies, dulce de leche cup, and both her orange and coffee flan. All are excellent and out of this world delicious– I just wish she was there every week. The owner is amazingly sweet and works full time and bakes these tasty treats in her spare time. Not sure how she does it but I’m thankful she does.

Four words: Spicy Chocolate Diablo Cookies Seriously, that’s all you need to know. But you want more? Ok, fine. Have you ever had Mexican hot chocolate? If so, this is that amazingly delicious beverage, but in cookie form. It’s sweet, it’s slightly spicy, and it’s full of flavor. I purchased a two-pack today from Little House Green Grocery, fully planning on eating one today and saving the other for tomorrow. Yea, that plan didn’t last… I could hardly wait an hour between the two treats. Never have I had such an incredible mix of textures in a cookie! It’s a sandwich style, with creamy frosting in between two light, but crispy, chocolate cookies. But if you’re looking for a frosting overload, you won’t find that here. Somehow the mastermind behind the cookies manages to create the perfectly proportioned balance between cookie and filling so that neither are overpowering but you aren’t left wanting more of one, either. Perfection. I’m so excited that my neighborhood market is stocking theses goodies! But if you can’t make it over to Bellevue, you can check them out at SOTJ, too.

Hispania Bakery is a new vendor tent at the South of the James River farmer’s market, run by a very sweet lady who you can tell has put a lot of care into each of her products. Always willing to try something new, my boyfriend and I were delighted at the sight of her«Spicy Chocolate» cookie sandwiches. Just our luck, she also had samples of them to try before committing! We were not disappointed. In between two decadent dark chocolate cookies was an even more incredible chocolate ganache, both with the perfect amount of spice! I’m not sure if it was cayenne, or maybe another Hispanic spice that helped bring out that«spice» flavor, but it was very balanced and it brought out the flavors from the chocolate even more. We also decided to try her guava cheesecake. The package came with four mini cheesecakes which were each topped with her homemade guava topping. These were good, but I wasn’t as excited about them as I was about the cookie sandwiches. They were also very filling! Just one tiny cheesecake(see photo) made me so full that I didn’t want to eat for the rest of the day! Which is a very strange and rare phenomenon, if you ask me! Full tummy aside, Hispania Bakery will definitely be on my list of regulars at the South of the James!
