So I arrived in Richmond starving and decided I wanted a burger so I asked Siri where I could get one. Current was the first restaurant on the list because it was closest to The Omni where I was staying so I decided to give it a try. It was not busy at all so there were plenty of places to sit. I asked where the crowd was and I was told I was early. I was good with that so I order and was not disappointed. I had a house salad and Current Burger. The salad was fresh and was much bigger than I expected. The burger was fantastic and the temperature was exactly how I ordered it. The only problem is you need a bib to eat the Current Burger but if you can get past the messiness it is well worth it. I was there on a Wednesday night and starting at 8:00 they had live local comics on the stage performing. Some were funnier than others but we were dealing with amateurs! I’d definitely recommend Current. Shane was the bartender and very personable. Looking for a place that is clean with a local feel, this is the place to go!

Came here on a Groupon deal and was quite impressed! I’d actually been here before, when it was part of Toad’s Place; I just didn’t realize it until I walked up. I love the layout of this place with the stepdown from the door and various seating options. It’s right on the canal too, but this was a 100 degree day so I chose inside. When we got there, we were greeted with a friendly, «Hello!» and given our choice of seats. It wasn’t crowded but there were a few other diners there. It looked liked a live band was setting up on the stage but we finished before they started. Drinks? I’m always a fan of a place that has Legends Brown Ale on draft so I ordered one. They seem to have a deep selection in their bar, including bourbons. I wish the server would have talked about the bourbons and their selection; I’m trying to expand my knowledge of drinkin’ options. I had read great things about their burgers so went straight to that part of the menu. They have a good selection of burgers and many other sandwiches, as well as appetizers. Following a previous review and a good looking description, I ordered the Current burger and onion rings. Wow, great choice! This is a well-cooked, good quality burger with great flavors, surrounded by one of the best buns I’ve had. It was big enough to hold the burger to the last bite without falling apart, but still a tender and tasty bread… high marks! The onion rings were also great, with a light batter and a good crunch. My friend had a standard burger and sweet potato fries… all reports were positive. This place has so much going for it, in my opinion, but it needs some encouragement to overcome its location. It shares the building with Off the Hookah but otherwise it’s at the end of a quiet street. Maybe it gets busier here on weekend nights? dunno. Overall, I enjoyed this and will be back when I am in the bottom and want a great burger!

Decent burgers and beer selection, and good fries. We went for a late lunch and there were very few people. The burgers took a LONG time to get there. There is a new-ish parking lot right on the other side of the canal, a two minute walk away. I went because I had a Groupon coupon; I probably won’t go again unless I have a particularly compelling reason.

This was the worst place ever, even though the service was exceptional. Our server was great! She was quite young, but very attentive and one of the friendliest people I met. However, I just felt so uncomfortable when the manager came over, he was very uneasy. He ruined the ambiance of the whole place! The food was just okay. I would not recommend this place, though because it is just too disorganized.

We stopped at an odd time(3pm) and there were only 2 other people there. Which was a shame because the food was very good. The Current burger was great, and the fries & onion rings are awesome. Good selection of local beers on draft. The location is neat, with great views of the canal. There is no local parking, but there is a public parking garage 1 block up on the same street. An easy walk. The only reason I didn’t go 5 stars on the rating is because the table we sat at, and the one next to it hadn’t. Den cleaned and were all sticky. But the waitress quickly grabbed a towel and cleaned them both. She was awesome and very attentitive while we were there. I would go back again… I just hope business picks up for them.

This restaurant is really a bar with mediocre bar food. I’m confused by a their slogan highlighting Bourbon, Beer and Burgers — the menu doesn’t even list the Bourbons or the Beer. This is in a nice location to sit outside next to the canal, but I wouldn’t recommend the trip. BTW, there is only valet parking for $ 5

In Summary: It’s a good place to grab a burger and fries outside by the canal. I was wandering along the canal when I got hungry and stumbled upon this place. There wasn’t much signage for it. All I saw was a 8.5×11 printout that said ‘Current: Bourbon & Burgers’ taped to the door. When I walked inside(about 1:30pm on a Wednesday) the place was empty except for two people sitting at the bar. The bartender was very friendly and he seated me outside and got my drink immediately. It was very peaceful sitting outside next to the canal, probably due to the lack of other patrons. The friendly bartender was very attentive and frequently checked on my lonely self sitting outside. I ordered the signature Richmond Bourbon Burger which had had grilled onions with a glaze made in house from Jim Beam Red Stag(black cherry flavored) Bourbon. I had my doubts about a cherry-flavored burger, but it was delicious! The meat was cooked just right, the bread was soft, and the glazed onions were piled high. The battered fries were crispy and close to perfection. I didn’t test their bourbon selection or try any drinks from the bar so I can’t comment on that aspect. PROS: –The burger and fries are delicious –The bartender on duty was very friendly and attentive –The location by the canal is great CONS: –The lack of other customers was a little strange, though that could have just been due to the time of day
