Looking for a decently priced, fast serviced, dinner spot in Carytown? Look no further. Sushi for dinner is typically a not-so-worth it meal due to the high price and the small dishes, but ordering the Sushi Roll Deluxe definitely filled two hungry foodies(and then some) at an irresistible price of $ 29. For $ 29, we essentially shared 7 rolls. WHOA. The Sushi Roll Deluxe consists of 6 chef’s choice rolls(usually the most popular standard rolls) and a choice of either Eel Dragon Roll or another specialty roll whose name escapes me. The order came with 2 piping hot bowls of miso soup. First time I had miso soup served that… hot? In a good way, LOL. Chef’s choice for us was spicy salmon, philly roll, California, tuna avocado, salmon avocado, and tuna. Being a Monday night, it only made sense to share an entire bottle of plum wine, right? So we did. Kikkoman Plum Wine. Cheap, sweet, and to the point. $ 20 of sweet 11.5% ABV deliciousness to kick off a long week ahead.

Absolutely LOVE this place. Best sushi In town! My server Katrina was very pleasant… And everyone loves her because she prepped a bunch of straws. She should work in a factory. Greatest dining experience ever! I will definitely be «rolling» back there again!

I dined at Carytown while on a business trip in Richmond. I really wanted sushi and was already on Cary St so it was convenient and I passed it on my walk back to my car. This was a Monday night and I sat at the sushi bar. THEGOOD… –was greeted promptly –waitress was courteous –water was refilled without asking –although a small portion, the seaweed salad was good –Robinson Roll was very good and I’d definitely get again THEBAD… –sashimi was served at room temp. I prefer it cold. –salmon sashimi had a little fat on it that I had to remove –Naruto Roll was OK, but fell apart(wouldn’t order again) Overall, Carytown was ok. I’ve had much better sushi, but I’ve also had a lot worse. I’d return if I was nearby and wanted a quick sushi fix… but if I lived here I am sure I’d find other restaurants that had better execution with even more variety.

Super fresh, great atmosphere and super friendly wait staff. The green tea is the best I have had outside Asia. I recommend the Hamachi and the Dragon roll.

Moving from California to RVA, finding legit, fresh sushi has been an absolute struggle! However, I’ve been hearing about Carytown sushi so I gave it a whirl with couple of my friends. Well, let’s just say Carytown sushi delivered! I personally like the simple, traditional sushi vs the«Americanized» sushi rolls and I appreciated how they had just that. I could tell that the fish pieces were fresh and the sushi rice was also just right. Their sweet potato roll was also on point and I bet all others rolls are delicious too. I also appreciated how they had other traditional Japanese dishes as well. Great people. Great environment. Great place!

best sushi I’ve had in so many years. ideal. the ramen is great too! good service, atmosphere, beautiful presentation. worth every penny. they even had some of the less common Japanese food that I’m always disappointed you can’t find in the states!

Though it’s located towards the seedier end of Carytown, this restaurant has a lot of heart. Not only is the sushi fresh and made to order, but they have daily lunch specials that are quite a bargain as well. As far as the sushi itself goes, it’s your typical nigiri, sashimi and tempura, but they also have a few specialty rolls that are quite good as well. I’d recommend this for a leisurely lunch, a light dinner or a weekend meal. There are probably better, more«Japanese» places to eat, but for the price and convenience of it, you can’t beat Carytown Sushi. B

This place is a pretty simple sushi restaurant. Now it’s not sticky rice or anything fancy, they just have good sushi. It’s convenient for me since I work in carytown and I can walk here, and if I’m craving a small light lunch, carytown sushi gets the job done. Like others had said their presentation isn’t fancy like other sushi places I have been to but to me that doesn’t matter since it’s gonna be in my stomach in 2 seconds. The sushi I have had from them is their spicy tuna, Philly roll and their sleeping beauty. All were very yummy and something I would get again, especially the spicy tuna, so good! My boyfriend always gets the same thing which is their volcano roll. It’s deep fried and that’s all I have to say, cause it’s very good. The staff has always been friendly and yes getting your food can be slow as well, but hey order a ginger salad or something before you get your sushi.

I was just not feeling it. The tempura tasted too hard and not fresh /cooked too long. The waitress was not that attentive. Service was slow. Prices were up there and the quality was meh. Overall I would not come here again.

I got food poisoning here on 2 separate occasions from tempura shrimp which usually means the batter is re-used/bad. Avoid.

I absolutely love this place. To death. I come here so often it’s borderline embarrassing, but with good reason. The rolls are cheap(3.50 for an Avocado roll) and relatively quick. The waitstaff is attentive, helpful, and always checking up to make sure you’re comfortable in the haze of happiness eating sushi puts you in. They completely respect my veganism, and answer any question I might have about specific rolls(A waitress even comp’d my entire meal when egg was accidentally put in my roll!) The avocado rolls are A+, and the Oshinko(pickled radish) are crunchy and savory. Prior to my veganism I adored the Robinson Roll. Happy hour happens from 5 – 7 tues/wed. 50% off select rolls? You bet I’m going to be there happily stuffing my face

First time here after a recommendation from a family member. Very happy with my meal and will definitely come back. Only downside, in my opinion, is the size of the restaurant, which is comparable to the other restaurants in this area.

So I agree with most of the previous reviews regarding service. When I arrived for lunch there was only one other group there and they were already eating. Even though the restaurant was fairly empty, the service still seemed slow. Definitely not the place to go on an hour lunch break. Not only was I not a fan of the service, I was not a fan of the food. I ordered the three rolls of sushi lunch combo and the taste and especially the presentation was lacking. Even the way the sauce was applied to one of my rolls seemed lazy compared to what I typically see. I probably won’t be back.

So good! The Carytown Roll is my favorite and the tempura chicken on the appetizer menu was delicious. Small place with very good service.

Decent sushi for the price. I got the spring rolls which had a good quantity of five but the filling was lacking. I would have preferred less sorting rolls like four and put more filling in them. For the main course I had the 14 piece sushi sampler, Sushi Deluxe including the spicy tuna roll. The roll was probably the best part. The sushi was average, with the fish actually being room temperature. I’m used to cold cuts of fish. The rice wasn’t that sticky and kind of fell apart when picking up with chopsticks. Dinner standard fish, salmon, tuna, mackerel, and others. Two of the fourteen pieces included a tofu or egg cake thing, and then the game crab stick. Overall unimpressed. Service was friendly but a little slow. It was a Wednesday night and not a full house.

Small, intimate, extensive selection and LOT of veggie options. The asparagus roll was steamed, bland, and underwhelming but the tempura veggie and sweet potato rolls were fantastic. Connect four game at the table is a stroke of brilliance. Nice time-passer while waiting for food and a good distraction from the slow(but very friendly) service.

You know that episode of King of the Hill where the sushi restaurant opens and dude makes a tuna roll using canned tuna? That’s what this is like. Sharing a half opened can of tuna in the alley with some homeless guy and his dog just might be a better idea.

Ordered the Carytown Roll; it was really tasty but wasn’t executed in the highest possible quality. The pieces of the roll were so insanely large that it broke in to sad little pieces when picking it up with chopsticks, and way too messy to use your hands to eat(did you know that’s the proper way to eat sushi? Apparently. I promise). My friend complained that his rolls were pretty small, and I must agree they were, but I guess it just depends on what you get because like I said, mine was ginormous. The prices are a bit steep for what you get. There was only one waitress and her attention was spotty. Took forever for her to bring us our check, refill drinks, etc, because she was telling her life story to a customer, who, in turn, was also telling the waitress her life story. Hellooo, please pay attention to me too, I am needy. I’d be willing to give it another shot, though.
