This business was featured in the local news a few months back. Their mammography machines use low radiation doses. That FACT got my attention, as I have concerns about getting mammograms(especially annually), due to the radiation exposure. My appointment was at 2:00 and I arrived about 1:30 to fill out the paperwork. They actually then called me in earlier than I was scheduled. I had the mammogram done, and they told me they were going to also do an ultrasound. Apparently, my breasts are«dense»; I’m unsure if that’s complimentary. The doctor called me in to review the images.(I have no interest in anything medical, especially when it pertains to my body, so I wasn’t too thrilled about this step.) We then reviewed the new images, and my prior mammogram images(I tried to averted my eyes.), which I had retrieved from another facility. The new images were markedly more detailed. The mammogram I received here used 1⁄3 the radiation as my prior mammogram.(Apparently, the radiation exposure is noted on the actual image.) I received a favorable review, my breasts are in good shape, literally and medically. PLUS: *** Immediate results *** You don’t need to wait for your primary care physician to receive, review, then contact you. PLUS: No call backs. You have a mammogram, and if necessary, an ultrasound. They know where you stand before you leave, and tell you. PLUS: They claim these newer machines are more comfortable. I didn’t notice the difference, but I can tolerate a minute or two of discomfort or even pain. Mammograms aren’t painful, but yes, somewhat uncomfortable due to the contortion of your body.

This is one of only two mammography centers in RVA that I’d recommend to a family member. The doctor who founded the practice, Dirck Briedlinger, has retired. Good news is that the MD who’s taken over, Dr. Michael Bigg, is easily as outstanding as Dr. Briedlinger was. Pluses: time from in the door to out the door are pretty stellar. If your appointment is at 2pm, and you arrive on time, you’ll be outta there(barring issues revealed in the imaging) in under 45 minutes, often under 30 minutes. The staff are all friendly, the office is set up for comfort while waiting, and they’ve got a coffee machine in the«waiting to see the doctor» lurkage area. BIGPLUS: you view the films with the doctor. None of this«we’ll send you a letter» b/s. For those of use who’ve had breast cancer, that’s a MUST. Everyone should get that same level of interaction, knowledge, and reassurance. Highly recommended.
