Morris Burner Hotel

The Morris Burner Hotel is a little slice of what Burning Man is and has to offer. It’s a place to go and mix/​mingle with like minded people. They have drum circles on Monday nights, Tuesday Talks, with educational and informative topics. They have pot lucks, DJ’s, bands, art cars, art pieces. I’ve never stayed the night here, but I have looked at quite a few of the rooms. They’re all decorated differently, and give off an amazing vibe.
The bar has recently been updated with a sort of Steam Punk feel to it. It’s absolutely beautiful. If you ever want to get an idea of what Burning Man is like, or what/​who Burners are, pop on down to the Morris. You’ll be welcomed with open arms by everyone that’s there. You’ll probably get a warming hug as you walk in.)’(

Awesome vibe here. They also really make sure you are safe. You will always find someone willing to call you a cab or otherwise find you a safe ride home. Walk you up to your room if you need. A great place to party and a great organization that really cares about the community. It’s burning man in Reno year round.

I have never been treated worse then I have here. Motel 6 has more credit then this place. Unbelievably rude for a place that «loves everyone» I’ve never felt more unacceptaded. I didn’t even come to stay here which is the worst part, I came to watch some friends dj and because I’m not super into burning man the minute I walked in I was labeled a «non member» and was treated like crap. An embarrassing place to represent reno.

My husband and I were in Reno last fall and some friends told us they were also in town and they’d be at a party later in the evening at this hotel. We weren’t far so we walked a few blocks and found ourselves ringing the door bell, trying to find a way in. The neighborhood is horrible and we probably would have stayed at the party later but we didn’t want to walk back to the casinos in the dark. Be aware of your surroundings if youre walking by!
Once inside the hotel, we were offered a tour of some of the rooms. Very unique! Several were occupied and we couldn’t look at these, but the ones we saw were really fun with great paintings and decorations.
A narrow stairway leads you to a large yard in the back. Lots of large scale art, a few chairs, and a stage. It started to rain as we left — wonder if people piled inside the small lobby or braved it outdoors. It was a cool place to check out before working our way safely back to our own hotel.

The best part of the burner take over of this decrepit building is that for now it is saved. But like putting gaudy make up on a corpse, I’m not sure that’s a good thing.
Imagine turning a cool old car into a hippie van and adding a pink sparkle interior. In an effort to be hip and ironic, they’ve succeeded only at being juvenile, uncomfortable, trite and anti-​hipster.
This is a self aggrandizing masturbatory fling at counter culture that doesn’t really fall flat. It never really begins. At least it’s close to Louis’ Basque Corner.

This place is super fun, so much that it seems I’m here all the time. The Morris Burner Hotel is in a historic building right near downtown Reno. It’s not in the best part of town, but it’s part of an effort being made to make 4^th St fun and interesting again. It’s only a block away from the bus station and only a couple blocks from the main casinos. It is a hotel created by Burners, so it has a very Burning Man vibe and they encourage everyone to practice radical inclusion, self-​expression, civic responsibility and the other principles of Burning Man.
You don’t have to be a Burner to stay here or attend their many events though. In the last few months I’ve attended several poetry readings, parties, a folk festival, and an art show here, plus stayed in one of the fun rooms.
Each of the rooms is being decorated by a different artist in a different theme, so far there are:
The Goddess Room (my fave)
The Southwest Room
The Forest Lord Room
The Sparkle Pony Room (glitter and girly and fun)
The Rock and Roll Room
The Alice in Wonderland Room (a black&white spiral across the room makes for a powerful impact)
This is not a plug-​and-​play hotel, so much as it is an experience in and of itself. It has a very hostel feel, people are coming to stay there from all over the world, most rooms share the main bathrooms, and there are often communal dinners. It has a comfortable feel like you are at a fabulous someone’s home. The people you meet here will be those you become friends with and it will leave you feeling like you are part of a larger family.
