I was passing thru Refrugio and stumbled across some of the best BBQ ever. Walked in early before the noon crowd showed up we were treated to a home like environment. The gal that waited on us was definitely a home town like gal full of energy and friendly. I ordered the Tejas Loaded Baked Potato, OMG! I should have cut it in half but it was so good I eat the whole thing, LOL so if your hungry and tired of Mexican food or not, don’t pass this place up, you’ll be pleased.

I was in the mood for some Texas BBQ. Just had to try this place out. It’s definitely a must have if you’re passing through Refugio. Even if you’re not make sure to take a detour. Nice sized sandwiches. I had the chopped brisket. Delish! Got my meat rubbed right and that’s always a good thing.

MMMMmmm this place is amazing! I visited recently for lunch and had the chili with corn bread and my boyfriend had the brisket sandwich. Everything was delicious! The young lady that waited on us was very attentive and sweet. The owner also visited with us at our table and was very friendly. Can’t wait to go back soon.

Waiting out a rain delay that kept our friends from landing their plane in Refugio, we stopped at Tejas BBQ, on Alamo St. across from HEB. Intrigued by the chicken fried bacon on the specialty menu, we decided to split an order between us. As much as I admired the concept, it missed completely. The fried coating was fine. But the bacon inside was tough and chewy and everything was extremely greasy. It was not good. So with more than a little trepidation, we each ordered a chopped sandwich. We needn’t have worried. Meat was tender and delicious, but with enough char that it actually had a little crunch. Came with very fresh crisp onions and was delightfully lightly sauced. And the bread was terrific. A light, airy potato roll with just a touch of sweetness(honey, I’m guessing). Sandwiches were a big hit. A side of beans was on the north side of passable. Not fantastic, but not Bill Miller, either. Potato salad did not stand out in any way. Didn’t try any of the other BBQ, or the catfish/hushpuppy special, but Tejas is certainly worth the stop for the sandwiches alone.

Bbq was really bad, oversmoked from a dirty fire. The beans tasted like ranch style beans strait from the can and potato salad tasted like plain grocery store potato salad. Overpriced for the quantity of food received, I got 4 very small ribs on the rib plate, my wife got 3 small slices of beef on the sliced beef plate. Our total bill was 27.86 for 2 people ! The peach cobbler was good and the staff were nice and friendly. I would pass.

Stopped in to give the sliced brisket sandwich a try to compare to my favorite place in Houston(Virgie’s). Great flavors, love the rub with a bit of spice, and the bun is really delicious. I never get sauce… the only way to judge the smoke flavor of a brisket is by itself. If you are driving through Refugio… it is a must stop.

Another who has driven past a hundred times – finally decided to stop. It’s across 77 from the H-E-B, in a converted gas station. You can order takeout from outside, or order & eat inside the old garage area. I had the brisket, which can only be described as brisket snowflakes – it melts on your tongue(well, not quite, but you know what I mean!). No sauce was needed. While intensely smoked, the smoke did not completely take over the flavors of the meat & rub, which is quite an accomplishment. There’s a fine line between over-smoked & smoked to perfection. This leans heavily to the latter. Give it a try!

Have driven by over the past 3 years and finally stopped in. My «gold standards» are brisket and ribs. Both were smoked extremely well and were very moist and succulent – I put this up against anything in Lockhart. I only used the sauce to mellow the salt content, which is my only complaint. The beans were good as well. The staff is extremely accommodating. If you’re thirsty, you’ve come to the right place as the drink size would fill a camel. I am looking forward to going back for something different.

Always wanted to try this place because the smoke out of the pits blows across US77 when you drive through town. I scored it an 84 out of 100. Reserve Grand Champion Texas Barbecue. The sauce and sausage is the only reason this place does not score in the high 90’s. The brisket and ribs are 5 star. Brisket: Excellent. The most tender brisket I have ever put in my mouth. I did not know brisket could be this tender. It was prime rib tender and very moist. Full mesquite smoke flavor. No sauce needed at all. It stayed moist to the last bite and never dried out. Outstanding. The brisket alone is worth the drive to Refugio. The rub was a little salty only because it was noticeable. Ribs: Excellent. The ribs had full mesquite smoke flavor. Soft bark, clean bite with little tearing, and clean bone. They were just barely on the tough side of tender. No sauce was needed. I bet these ribs could push the total score over 90, I am sure that I just caught this pit master at the wrong hour. Sausage: Fair. Fine grind, average flavor, average after taste, good smoke. Way too much grease. It may be Opas from Fredericksburg. Sauce: Fair. Fortunately sauce is not needed for this awesome pit barbecue because this sauce was just ok. It was average in flavor and did not enhance the flavor of meats. It was also served cold out of the fridge. Disappointing. Texas Monthly needs to make a trip to Refugio. This is definitely top 50 quality.
