Sushi is good and the staff is friendly. The sushi bar with boats is nice for small groups of 2 – 4 people, otherwise I would get a table. Chefs behind the bar are quick to make any roll, or prepare sashimi to order, if you do not see what you would like on the boats. Unfortunately, prices have gone up since the last time I was in, but I would still go back.

We had a great dinner. Love the boat conveyor belt. Very sweet staff, great prices and delicious food.

They’ve got a rotating sushi bar that is kinda cool. Atmosphere is nice. WAY too over priced for average tasting sushi. $ 6 for a roll of pieces. $ 1 per tiny roll just seems ridiculous. Wont be visiting again.

Today, Oct 29th2015 went for luncheon and ordered a Tiger sushi, teriaki chicken and udomi. The tiger sushi had only rice, sea weed wrap with some minced chicken meat and some sauce. It was not the tiger sushi. My friend ordered teriyaki chicken which was suppose to come with salad and soup and she got teriyaki chicken with steam rice on the side and no soup or salad as it was suggested. The udomi soup was disgraceful to us –substandard. It had sliced cucumber, soaked tempura(looked liked a vomit) with no shrimp or one tiny mushroom and diced onion. Tasted and looked disgusting. We asked the waiter about the shrimp and the greens and she said this is how it comes. Bet two people we paid $ 40 and not only the food, the service was horrible. This place needs to google to see how to make a tiger sushi, udomi and service food as menu suggest. Horrible…disgraceful to japanese restaurants

Great sushi boats, in my experience the sushi is definitely fresher at lunch. But if i’m sitting at the bar its pretty easy to get the sushi man’s attention and request they put out a fresh roll. My favorite is the Anderson roll! Sadly the fish isn’t the greatest quality and i’ve seen it cut way too thin for my taste. Still, for Redding, i’m happy and if I’m craving sushi, this is where I come for my fix.

For Redding this is #3 sushi place. It’s great because if your not trying to spend much money you can get little portions from the boats. Yes of course you have to use your best judgement if your going to get something from boats, because there not always going to be fresh(your an idiot if you can’t figure that out on your own). But I love seeing the boats because it’s an awesome part of Asian culture. Their bigger portions are obviously made fresh and I love the fact that I can get a little bit of everything and not pay an arm and a leg. There have been times where the waiters were a little more busy than I liked, but I went today and my water was always kept full.

Cute place for a date as it is visually appealing with all the little boats but eating raw fish that has been sitting on a conveyer belt for an unknown amount of time makes me uncomfortable. The sushi itself is not bad but not the best in redding.

We sat at the sushi bar, which was nice and roomy. Service is definitely lacking! Sushi, and other items, come out on little floating boats, cute. It’s difficult to guise what is star, as nothing is labeled. You have to do your best guess in what you’re choosing. Not a huge variety of items floating by. There is a pianist, who played for the entire time, about 2 hours, we were there. She was awesome!

The sushi was very good, as always, but the last couple of times I’ve been here the service has been terrible. I’m very disappointed as I come here quite often and I brought a girlfriend who had never been today, embarrassed by my choice. Today was probably the worst service I’ve ever had from here. Lunch from start to finish was over an hr. We waited over 10 minutes to order, had to ask for utensils and wasabi, and I had to flag my waiter down to order a couple extra small rolls as he wasn’t coming and checking on us. After finishing our lunch, we again waited 10 – 15 minutes to get our check and I pretty much had to flag him down again to ask for it. I don’t know when or if I’ll come back, maybe for takeout, but get your act together yama, your sushi is yummy!

I’ve been here several times and the sushi is fresh and the sushi chefs are fantastic! I’m only speaking to the sushi you order, I’ve never had the ready-made stuff on the boats. Best Sushi in Redding!!!

there is something wrong with the energy in this place. I can’t quite figure it out. Maybe its something with the front desk staff? Some of the sushi on boats was ok and some rather stale. its not a good concept. I noticed too that the menu book had prices quite different from SOME of the colored plate code pricing. I get the idea that a table seating will cost more than a stool by the boat’/water. I decided the right way to do this is to come there, sit at the circling boats near a sushi chef inside the circle and just watch him place things, or even ask him for something. Maybe that will get me the meal I want.

Sushi floating on boats isn’t going to be the freshest(yes it does sit out a bit) but it is a fun concept and one I have enjoyed with my kids for a quick lunch since it opened about 10 years ago. The place has been going downhill since. First they stopped serving free edamame. Then they hiked the prices and decreased the quality. Recently more fried food and pink cake and less fancy sushi was showing up on the boats. You had to ask for ginger and wasabi. Yesterday, however, was the point of no return. Riding on the stern of one of the slow moving sushi boats was an anxious little sailor. My kid pointed and said,“Land ho! Stow away roach on board, matey!“ I couldn’t eat another bite and immediately found the manager. She asked if anyone else had seen the roach. I was aware the group of business men next to us had, and told her they had left immediately. She told me all restaurants have roaches; the entire strip mall was full of them. The exterminator had sprayed the night prior so all the roaches were all disturbed and active. This was normal. She then handed me a $ 23 bill! I told her most of the food was left uneaten as we did not want to eat food crawling with roaches. I refused to pay. Still trying to figure out how that roach got on the boat. Do they swim?

Although I may have a bias because I used to work here– it should also mean something that I still dine here after being ‘behind the scenes’ or ‘in the trenches?..’-insert metaphor. To start off we got hot tea, edamame, and the soft shell crab appetizer. I never had the soft shell crab before and it turned out to be really tasty! I would definitely order it again. I usually prefer the simple flavors of sashimi, futomaki or single fish rolls to the speciality rolls with many flavors and sauces. If you want a review of those rolls I wouldn’t be a good person to ask. No matter what sushi restaurant I’m at, my go to dish is the negihama roll(which is raw hamachi with green onion) and tekka maki(raw tuna roll). I like these rolls because the flavor of the fish is not hidden by other ingredients. The other people I was with ordered chicken teriyaki, sukiyaki, beef udon soup, and salmon kama(grilled salmon collar= delicious). My rolls were satisfying and I had no complaints. Since I order the same thing at every sushi restaurant I go to I noticed I got a little more fish in my roll than at a couple of the other local sushi joints. Service was excellent and I liked the changes in decoration they’ve made. The menu is quite large and full of pictures. If you are a first time diner and have specific dietary needs(vegetarian or not wanting to eat fish) don’t be afraid to ask a waiter for suggestions. After being away for a while and seeing the menu with fresh eyes I could see how it could be a little daunting for a newcomer. Also, the sushi chefs can create a custom roll for you if there’s something you want that isn’t on the menu.

I’m giving this restaurant one star above the lowest because the waiter was friendly and there’s also not many sushi places in Redding. I’ve eaten here three times. Quality of fish = Very low. I am lucky to be currently living in Hawaii where the sushi restaurants are everywhere and the fish is usually very fresh. I could barely eat the fish here. The ahi sashimi(tuna) tasted old and fishy. Some had a bad odor and the texture was slimy. All of those are signals that the fish is too old and shouldn’t be served. I love sushi and eat it 2 – 3 times a week at home, but this is unfortunately not edible for people who are used to fresh, good quality fish. If you are just passing through, and are used to good, fresh sushi, then you will want to take a pass on this place. The prices aren’t that great either. I realize that even having a sushi place in Redding is a gift, but unless you’re into fried tempura sushi and teriyaki chicken, I recommend going to one of the many excellent Thai and Mexican restaurants in Redding.

This used to be our go to sushi place until we tried Kobe Seafood & Steakhouse(fresh fish and big portions). Comparing the two this place is mediocre. I agree with other reviewers about the sushi sitting out for awhile and getting stale/soggy. They make their small plated sushi ahead of time and cover them with clear wrap and put them on the boats as people eat them. They are a bit pricey for 4 pieces of sushi too. Haven’t been to this place for awhile and probably never will.

Update on other review. It looks like they either read the Unilocal reviews or I caught them on a bad day the first time. I said that I had to give them less stars because they didn’t pick up my plates when they brought my check. This time they were right on top of it. Food was great service was really fresh, as it was the first time. 5 stars. thumbs up. can’t wait to go back. Taking my sister from out of town this week

Seared albacore sushi is our favorite here. Delicious. We’ve been coming to Yama for years. I’ve tried other sushi places in Redding, but we keep coming back here, as they’re consistently good. The food is tasty and the atmosphere has something for everyone. Sit at the bar and grab plates from the«sushi boats» or order fresh. Sit at the quiet tables, and you can still grab stuff from the bar if you want. Win-win. They’ve *always* been nice to my kids, giving hugs and smiles and bringing them sodas occasionally. They aren’t eating sushi yet, but love the teriyaki chicken and the fried shrimp from the«boats,» in addition to the edamame and sesame-seed balls dessert. The beef sukiyaki is the best I’ve had, if you’re looking for non-sushi fare. Overall, the best sushi in Redding.

What A rip off place, The olé Bait and Switch is alive and operating here in Redding. First, they have little boats floating around, you pick them and as the product ages, they cover with glass covers, sits for along time and gets old, not made to order fresh sushi waiting for someone to lift off boat. That did not appeal to me… I asked for made to order and was handed Menu by my wait person who was white and spoke English well. MENUS had no prices, however she said prices followed colored plated form that was posted on glass over hang. I ordered two plates at 3.50 each for little snack, plates came back different from chef and I asked waitress and then Chinese lady/Manager who said they were new(MENU)and wrong, told me that these were the correct plates, I showed her again pictures of my desired order, again she said menus wrong… I told her I wanted plates for price on board,(Red ones), and in my MENU, not the 5.95 plate food served on. I asked if owner was in, He agreed to take my payment I agreed to order but asked me to never come in again. I did nothing wrong, asked waitress for help, and this is the con game they run at the Yama Sushi. Stay away, you will be ripped off while not realizing it. I wont go there again, 2 visits, both horrible

I have gone back twice since I last reviewed and both times have been great. It appears either they fixed the issue, or it just happened to be two«off» days when I went. Either way, I’m back to enjoying the sushi that I know and love at Yama. I did take away one star for the service, though. Ordered a soda from the hostess on one of those visits, and never received it. Doh!
