A great park for easy hikes, picnics and just enjoying the outdoors. Picnic tables could use replacing but otherwise the park is clean and we’ll maintained. I’ve been coming here nearly my whole life and really loved exploring the caves as a kid. They also do at least one historical encampment here a year. The only downside is that route 58 splits the park in half.

Great park– low impact, mostly paved one big incline up a grassy hill with great views other than that it’s mostly flat. Plenty of frogs and tadpoles in the warmer months. Beautiful in fall and the winter. Dog friendly(except for the museum)

Putnam Park is one of my favorite parks in the area. The history and the scenery just do it for me. It’s especially gorgeous during the Autumn months. The main trail is paved and easy for anyone to walk. There are also a ton of historical landmarks within the park grounds. Along with being the oldest state park in the Connecticut, Putnam Park is also designated as the first State Archaeological Preserve. It was the site of the winter encampment of the troops under General Israel Putnam(for whom the park is named). There are regular Revolutionary War reenactments hosted by The Friends and Neighbors of Putnam Park. Putnam Park is a nice quiet place on the Bethel/Redding line. I am very grateful to those who pushed to reopen it.

I love Putnam Park. I used to come here all the time when I worked up the road. I would come during my lunch break and just relax in my car, sit underneath the trees, or go for a walk around the park, through the woods. Its paved though, super easy to walk. And the lake and animals in the warmer weather are really quite lovely. Oh, eco toilets too!
