This place deserves a review from me as I realize I’ve eaten here a lot and have almost always had a good experience. It’s cheap and the food is almost always excellent. Really, everything on the menu is out of the park. Get the chimichanga with fajita if you are not sure or the stuffed avocado. The American food is just as good as the Mexican food. The four stars is because one or two times out of the many times I’ve eaten here the food was not up to par. I specifically noticed that the owner was not there, nor was his usual cook. Seriously, the owner is there almost EVERY time I eat there and he or his main cook prepares the food, so it is with a bit of hesitation that I knock him a star on that… poor guy has to have a break sometimes. Also there is a part time waitperson that is not very attentive compared to the rest of the group that are usually very good. If you are going between Lockhart and Bastrop and want some great food, or just looking for some good Tex Mex or chicken fried steak, then this hole in the wall, that’s really what it is, will surprise you with good food and friendly staff.

The first time I came here, was with a Co-worker. He frequents the place, and we decided to go here for lunch. I ordered the Menudo. It was full of flavor, and not too chunky(I like bite the tripe bite sized). I was surprised at the quality of the food, just from judging the outside. It looks like a hole in the wall place, that has been around since forever. The service was great. The wait staff was very attentive, and friendly. I have not had a chance to go back yet, but My Co-worker brought me some breakfast tacos from here this morning. I ordered chorizo, potato, and cheese(my favorite). They were delicious! The tacos are a good size, and were not greasy(as chorizo tends to be). This may be my new«go-to» for breakfast tacos.

I have been a customer of this restaurant for several years. The food is good but almost every time I go to the counter to pay for my meal the ticket that the cashier rings up is 20% higher then our meals, including the tip I already added in and left on the table. I try to explain the overcharge and ask for a explanation then the cashier suddenly can’t speak any English! She tells another person whom I guess is the boss in Spanish that I am questioning my bill then neither can speak any English. They know I will give up frustrated and leave paying the overcharge! This has happened so many times that I am not going back, it’s a shame because the food is good. I just hate being played!

Can’t believe it took us this long to try this place. We drive by it all the time and thanks to Unilocal.Their food is delicious and served hot which is what I like. I also love their salsa. Service is good. Only one waitress does everything. I am glad that from now on I do not have to go far for Mexican food.

Love this place, it is just a simple Mexican food place in the country. The food has always been great, the prices are very good. Most important, the enchiladas and the migas are fantastic!

We have been eating at El Borrego de Oro for several years. It is a great place for TexMex food and a very friendly atmosphere. It is family owned and operated and owners and staff tend to remember regulars by name. The only downside is the number of flys in the restaurant even though there is always an effort to keep them at a minimum. The beef fajitas for two has been among our favorites on the menu. The Carne Guisada is also excellent. All of the breakfast items are great.

Simply great food. We had pancakes, huevos rancheros, omelets, and scrambled eggs. Everything was delicious and fresh. The homemade salsa makes a perfect topping. I also enjoyed meeting the owners, who are super friendly and hard working. We’ll be returning the next time we visit our family in Texas.

Good food, but you have to be willing to forgo such conviniences as as cleanliness… but dont get me wrong… the food isnt bad at all. They’ve got a really good tortilla soup, great for a cold day or when you’re in the mood for it. They also have a good burger. Double or single meat is good but the cream of the crop is the mega burger, a double meat concoction with bacon, swiss, shrooms, and plenty of brown paper bag soaking grease. Worth every penny and point of cholesterol IMO. Also, I enjoy the carne guisada which is of the darker reddish variety which in my opinion is how it ought to be. It’s definantly worth a try if you’re in the area but not something I’ll go out of my way to have.

I eat here regularly. This is a family owned, family run place. They remember me and always have my drink order ready when I walk it. Their burgers, tacos, quesadillas, and nachos are all awesome. Rarely busy, never a wait, try this place it you’re in the area. You won’t be disappointed.

My husband and I had been to this restaurant once before I became a Unilocaler, and we decided to visit it again on Memorial Day(we called to make sure the place would be open). My mother decided to come too. We all ordered iced teas to drink, and had to wait awhile before we were able to also order some queso compuesto. This arrived with a very generous amount of ground beef mixed in … too much, in my mom’s opinion. Around this time a loud group of young people showed up. Looked like teenagers to me, but who knows, maybe they were of age. All I know is that they didn’t get carded as they ordered a mostly-liquid lunch, and I still get carded at 28. When the queso arrived we ordered our food: my husband got the lunch special of carne guisada, I ordered a chicken burrito(the menu said it came with rice and salad, so I asked to add a side of beans, but the waitress said it came with beans too), and my mom ordered a combo plate with two beef enchiladas, a beef taco, and a tamale. The waitress asked my husband what kind of tortillas he wanted, and he said he wanted corn. I knew that my mother and I would want tortillas too, so I asked for 4 flour tortillas. My mom asked for some chopped onion on the side for her meal. Our food came out extremely quickly — seemed like less than 5 minutes after we ordered. My mom’s chopped onions were on her enchiladas rather than on the side, so she scraped some of them off and put them on her rice and beans, since that’s what she’d wanted them for. My husband’s 2 tortillas came, but not the other ones I’d requested, so I again asked for 4 flour tortillas for my mother and I. The waitress said they were coming. I looked at my burrito and it had cheese and verde sauce, and I thought the menu had said it had sour cream as well, so I asked the waitress if it was supposed to have sour cream. She said she didn’t know. I said, «Well, then can I have some sour cream?» A few minutes later she came and put the sour cream and tortillas on the table, then went to tend to the loud group. Well, the tortillas were corn, not flour. At that point, mom and I decided to just eat them rather than ask for more stuff. Good thing they came, because at that point my burrito was still too hot to eat. So I made myself a rice/bean/queso taco and ate that while I waited for the burrito to cool off. My mom wasn’t eating her food either, because there were some flies buzzing around in the restaurant and she said she«just can’t eat when there are flies around inside» or something. She and my husband swatted at the flies for a few minutes until they left us alone(the restaurant had the door open when we arrived, so maybe that’s where the flies came from). When we finally ate our food, it was good. My beans had plenty of smoky flavor from lard, needed a bit of salt, but that’s okay. The chicken in my burrito was tender and well-seasoned. The verde sauce was spicy but the sour cream helped. I tried my mom’s tamale and enchiladas and they were good, and my husband liked his carne guisada. We had a hard time getting the waitress(there were two waitresses and 3 tables occupied total) to come back over to refill our teas, but were finally successful. My mom paid for her meal and it was slightly over $ 10. The total for the rest(2 teas, queso, chicken burrito, carne guisada special, and the arroz con leche popsicle my husband got out of the freezer) was around $ 27. We weren’t charged for the extra tortillas, so I let it slide that we were charged for sour cream. I’m sure we’ll visit this restaurant again eventually, after rotating through the closer Bastrop Mexican restaurants a few times. I just hope that we receive better service.

I realized my only reviews have been for places I had gripes with, so I decided to review my neighborhood restaurant, to which I can give 5 stars. I had misgivings about this place the first time – it’s out in the middle of nowhere, so they wouldn’t really have to be any good to bring in desperate lost or local hungry customers. I was very pleasantly surprised, and all the many times I’ve been back I’ve never had a bad experience. Their food is very good, if a tiny bit on the salty side(which I like). If I could recommend only one item, it would be the beef fajitas, which are wonderful(if you’re on a budget, order the very generous beef fajita tacos, which contain as much meat as the fajita plate for a lot less, although you’ll have to order guacamole on the side if you want it). The service has also always been good too – friendly, low-key, all-around very nice. The only warning I could possibly give is that you may need to ask for a plastic bag with to-go orders, since they often just put it in a thin paper bag.
