Weis Grocery and Gas Been here a few times for groceries. It’s ok but they used to carry two items that I’d make a special trip on my way home; however, they don’t carry them anymore. The Weis card I scanned into Iphone app, key ring, doesn’t seem to work here. The conveyor belt on the self-check-out line is annoying compared to other self-checkouts I’ve been to. The gas station: Hey Weis, if you’re not going to have pumps operational at all hours, then turn off all your lights in/around that area! Don’t have people thinking that they can use their debit/credit cards at your pumps even, sheesh!!! I circled 4 pumps at close to 4:20 this morning and what did I see? This pump is closed. I wasted time just pulling into the parking lot, not to mention hoping I’d be able to get gas here.

As stores go this is a big jump up from the local Food Lions. I’d say it’s on par with Martins but the ultimate store is Wegmans in Frederick MD. We need to get a Wegmans near us to showcase what a true grocery store can be, not some average run of the mill operation. I do like to pick up prescriptions here and Kevin, the Pharmacist is very squared away, polite and helpful. He makes it worth shopping at Weis!

It is amazing to me that with all the build up in the Jefferson County area, we still lack some pretty basic amenities that most areas this large enjoy. We have no movie theater, very little in the way of other entertainment, and we lack a really good grocery store. First off — this Weis is MILES ahead of the one in Martinsburg… but that isn’t saying much. This store is brand new, twice the size, and in a much busier area than the decades old run down Weis in Martinsburg. However, it still has quite a few problems. Much like Martins and Food Lion, Weis has been struggling to try and compete with both the el cheapo garbage grocers known as WalMart, and with high end, well run grocery stores, like Wegmans. As a result, much like Martins and Food Lion, they are trying to do 100 different things and end up not doing a lot of them terribly well. Whenever you shop here(or at any store), check the expiration dates — ONEVERYTHING. As the stores have ballooned in size and cut back on labor costs by mostly only hiring part timers so they don’t hvae to pay benefits, the quality of the maintainence of the stores has gone downhill. Products are not rotated properly when they are stocked, so it is not uncommon to find out of date products on the shelf, and I am talking about even in the dry grocery section… not just perishables. It is pretty sad when a jar of minced garlic(which is good for a couple of years from the pack date) is on the shelf with an expiration date more than a year past. Sadly, this is common at both other stores in the area: martins and Food Lion as well. Produce has become a bit of a problem too. A lot of it is just not as fresh and good as it should be. Green peppers that are wrinkled and drying up, and onions that are starting to turn to mush make regular appearances here. Meat is an issue as well. To cut costs, chains like this have gone to more and more prepackaged meat, which is a big red flag to me. I refuse to purchase this prepackaged stuff, because it is this prepackaged stuff that is recalled regularly due to suspected contamination from bacteria because of the way it is processed. Since it is churned out in factory like settings, if ONE piece of meat has bacteria in it when it goes through their assembly line, then that one piece of meat potentially contaminates every single piece of meat that has gone through that line. That is just a bad way of doing business — both financially and from a health standpoint. All in all, it isn’t that Weis is a bad store — it is fine. the problem is that the majority of grocery store chains are all like this: prepackaged meat, underpaid workers with no benefits who don’t really care that much about their jobs, produce that is subpar, and expired products on the shelf. Sadly, in this area, unless you feel like driving to Wegmans in Frederick, you are left with few other options.

This is a newer Weis market located in the shooping complex in Ranson. I was really impressed with this store. As others have said, it is night and day in comparison the one located in Martinsburg. The store has a decent deli section, salad and soup bar, sandwiches, and bakery. A great selection of vegetables. The seafood and meat section were pretty nice and the prices were ok. Now for the beer section. I was impressed with the selection, domestics and imports. Also, they have a section where you can make your own six pack. Nice. Store was very clean and I will be back.

This Weiss market has twice the«footprint» of the store in Martinsburg. I actually found a «dog bed» here that works fine for us and we plan to purchase another. The price was right too. Yeah, I know that is not their specialty, but the point is they have a lot of «convenience» items the Martinsburg store doesn’t have. Everything also seems«fresh» and«clean» so it comes up to par with Martins.
