Talk about a lot of pottery! This place is amazing, every nook and cranny of this Cameron Village store is filled with pottery made right here in the state of North Carolina. It’s steeped in good olé NC history. It comes from Seagrove an area in Randolph County that has been making pottery since the late 1700s when Colonial potters began making earthenware goods like jugs and crock pots. Each piece of Seagrove pottery is a piece of NC’s history, past, present and future.

The Seagrove pottery store looks — at first glance — to be just another copy of the standard crafty-style housewares store. But, there is much more going on here than one might think. Everything in the Seagrove store is handmade by North Carolina artisans in the Seagrove area. From blown glass bottles to handspun ceramic cereal bowls, each and every item in here is an expression of the talent and expertise of some of the finest craftspeople in the country. Amazingly, the prices are about the same as what you might find in one of those stupid faux-crafty places where everything’s from a factory in China. It’s not only household goods and utilitarian stuff, though. There are lots of nice gift items, art pieces, and random decorative stuff too.

These days, with our state’s furniture industry getting clobbered by cheap stuff from China, it’s nice to know that there are still some local crafts we can rely on. I love Seagrove pottery. Love the styles, the patterns, and the frequently cool, green and blue-ish color palette. When you can’t make the road trip, stop by this gallery in Raleigh’s Cameron Village shopping center for a good selection of functional and decorative pottery by Seagrove artisans.
