Small town Quitman, Georgia is home to one of the most attractive old courthouses I think I’ve ever seen. According to Wikipedia, the Brooks County Courthouse boasts Renaissance Revival and Romanesque Revival architectural styles. The brick building was constructed before the Civil War but in 1892 it was restored and it’s now on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside your eyes will be drawn to a three-tiered fountain and two prominent arches but be sure to take the front staircase up to the courtroom. The space features gloriously high ceilings, large windows and charming woodwork. The wooden courtroom benches have a beautiful timeworn patina and are fastened to the plank floors by wrought iron brackets. Purses and cell phones are prohibited from the courthouse, so unfortunately I couldn’t get any photos of the interior when I was there last week. To me it reminded me of the inside of the courthouse used in the 2010 film True Grit. I could totally picture people tying up their horses outside and racing up the stairs to the courtroom. Quitman may be a sleepy town but it has a striking courthouse that looks like it’s straight out of a movie. It’s a real charmer.
