West Thompson Lake is a nearly 2000 acre recreational area, built and maintained by the Army Corp of Engineers, surrounding the entire West Thompson Lake. It is NOT just camping. Camping, Hiking, fishing, Ice Fishing and even hunting each in their season are available at this recreational area. They even have a Disc Golf course. We visited in the middle of an ice storm January 18, 2015, and there were 20 cars there either Ice Fishing or mountain bike riding. #ThisIsNewEngland reviewed the area: This place rocks. #LiveLife and go for it.

West Thompson Lake has just about everything you could want in a car-camping venue. First and foremost, the bathrooms are super clean! They’re centrally located to sites too, so you can walk to them in the middle of the night with relative ease. There is also a nice shower stall available in each bathroom, and no quarters are needed to get it going. I took a few cold(to cool off since it was hot as hell in August) showers in there and never had to wait in line. There are 22 reasonably sized, flat campsites, so it’s not overwhelmingly large. About half of the sites have power and water(for RVs) but all of them are very close to running water. By which I mean it’s shared between 2 – 3 sites so you’ll have to walk about 50 feet tops. Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table. As with all campgrounds that I’ve ever been to, you can’t bring firewood in, you have to buy it at the site. It’s $ 3 a bundle here, a total bargain. And the sites are $ 15/night for tent camping. Not bad at all for a well-kept campground. My only advice is to avoid site 18 since it is very small and people use it as a cut-through to the bathroom. It also borders the playground. The campground was fairly quiet, but it’s not like you hiked in and have a ton of privacy. There is the occasional car exiting the campground, radio, group of kids playing throughout the day. But during quiet hours everyone is expected to zip it. It wasn’t overly buggy at night, but you definitely need to spray down to avoid getting eaten alive. We saw a few cool frogs hopping around in the woods, and you’ll hear them at night too. But come on, frogs are awesome. You unfortunately cannot swim in the lake, so you’ll have to go elsewhere to swim. There is no kayak rental on site here, but they do have a boat launch if you bring your own vessel. I really wish they had rentals though, since there’s nowhere near by to rent them. I was hoping the staff could help us out by telling us where we could find kayaks, but they sent us to a place 30 minutes away which was closed due to a fire they had 6 months ago. Other than that, they were extremely nice and very hospitable. If they added a kayak rental facility, this would definitely be a 5-star place.
