Cemetery number one The Winthrop Street Cemetery is also called Cemetery Number One, probably because it is the oldest graveyard in Provincetown. It was founded in 1723, very close to the site where the very first meeting hall was established. The three acre graveyard sure looks old with lots of very simple gravestones scattered over a couple of small sandy hills. Many are worn away to almost nothing and others have fallen or are learning over at strange angles. What is really unique about this ancient graveyard is the fact that it doesn’t look like a cemetery. Large trees and numerous bushes have grown up between the memorials and you actually have to look to find many of them gravestones. A very cool and very, very historic graveyard. No attempt has been many to clean up and remove the trees or plants and I suspect this is how the cemetery looked when it was in use in centuries past.
