Exuma is a gem among jewelry stores in New England. Owned by a professional jeweler and craftsman, Gunter Hanelt, Exuma has been in business for more than four decades(a lifetime in the constantly changing business landscape of Provincetown), and is my go-to source for all things glitter and gold. Gunter designs much of his own jewelry, particularly rings, and also carries a wide selection of estate jewelry. Over the past 25 years, and long before gold soared to $ 1,800 an ounce, I have purchased several rings from Exuma. All have withstood the passing years and sit proudly upon my fingers still in great condition. Gunter knows his customers on a first-name basis among the sea of visitors to busy Provincetown, and is always happy to polish and inspect his rings when I visit. The store is open year-round, and price negotiating is best harnessed during the off-season. In the market for quality jewelry made by a true craftsman? Have a special stone or pairing of gems you’d like to wear? Gunter will custom design whatever your heart desires! Exuma shines as that rare-breed jeweler when mass-produced-jewelry-chain-jewelry leaves you feeling, well… tarnished.

Now that the holiday’s have passed, I can divulge the gift I got for my Mom. An 18″ graduated triple-tone set of pink pearls! They are beautiful and the staff at Exuma gave me lots of great advice about their care to keep them looking amazing for years. I was very happy, because my Mom said they will be a new heirloom piece and she can’t wait to make family history with these pearls!

I bought the wife’s engagement ring here: a white gold band with a diamond inset. The reason why I chose Exuma instead of the million other jewelry stores in P-town was that a. the design of the ring was so distinctive, almost art deco-esque, and b. the owner was very nice and VERY helpful… he did everything possible to help me choose and didn’t try to upsell me into anything I didn’t want. They also gave me this cool ring cleaner liquid that made me sorta high when I smelled it. The only thing is, the design itself turned out to be flawed. The diamond fell out and needed to be reset and rebuilt. I don’t blame that on Exuma, exactly… I was the one who chose poorly.
