We moved away from our Portuguese family, and we are certainly missing all of our favorite treats. Finding this bakery was a delight. Family owned and operated. Fresh bread welcomes you in the second you step inside. It’s well priced, convenient location for parking. Somehow we always leave with way more than we intended, but half of it doesn’t even make it home! We can’t wait until our next visit :)

I buy bread from Silver Star as often as I can! My personal favorite sweet that they offer is the pecan tart – my roommate and I love them. Not exactly relevant to the taste, but their website could use some real information, as it is currently an image with no buttons :)

Everyone talks about the the obvious stuff in the display, but there are some HIDDENGEMS at Silver Star that are so WORTH the drive and experience. #1 — seem obvious, but their Portuguese Rolls. They don’t have them on display — they are in the back, but ask the lady for a ½ a dozen rolls, she disappears in the back and comes back with some of the best portuguese rolls. Bring them home and use them for cold cut sandwiches that would have never tasted so good without these rolls! #2 — Saturdays they have Fresh Goat Cheese delivered in the fridge to the left of the counter. Ask for help if needed. Get one AND the Portuguese Rolls — Bring them home, Slice open a roll, slice ¼ inch slices of the fresh cheese and layer it in your roll… The buttery cheesey fresh goat cheese in that roll is amazing! #3 — Saturday Fresh Donuts — the powdered Jelly Donuts and Chocolate ones are my favorite! I guess it’s not a hidden gem, but they seem to be super fresh on Saturday!

My husband and I have been going to this bakery for years now. The family who owns it is very nice and they have the best prices and pastries! Our favorites are the wine biscuits and the sweet bread — which cannot be beaten in Providence. They also recently started selling very reasonably priced gourmet cheese. This is a neighborhood staple and a must visit.

After searching on Unilocal,I picked up six pastries for a dinner party last night. The brownie was decent. The carrot cake was dry & flavorless. The tiramisu was awful. It was dried out, pasty, and old. Very disappointed because I selected mostly tiramisu & asked the clerk when it was made and was told the day before.

5 stars solely for the milk custard tarts. They’re perfect. Delicate taste and springy texture, not overly dense and not spongy either. It just doesn’t get better. Not the egg custard tarts but the milk custard — no pastry crust. The apple bun too was good, crusty with sugar on top and tart with real apples inside. Confused by some of the reviews that complain the pastries are overly sweet — hi, this is a Portuguese bakery…

Weekend donuts are amazing! This bakery has donuts, but only on the weekends. Normally you have to wait in a line that snakes around the whole(small) store. The donuts are worth the wait. Make sure you get there early. I arrived before 7:30am and there were only 3 of the sprinkled donuts left. They also have plain chocolate frosted, glazed, and granulated sugar.

This is, hands down, probably the best or waaaaay up there on the list of Portuguese bakeries in RI and surrounding MA. The owner is sweet, thoughtful, accommodating, and honest. The prices are reasonable and well worth the products. They more recently have started taking credit cards, so now I can really make some damage! Some of my faves: the sweetbread — by far, the best in the area… you can’t go wrong(tip: go on either Wednesday, Friday, or Sunday for out of the oven freshness); the cinnamon twist — the best I’ve ever had, seriously… these folks know their way around a flaky pastry; the Portuguese pastries(queijadas) like nata, feijao, and leit… amazing; oh, and the empanadas and calzones… MUAH! The bread, of course, is just wonderful, so filling it with savory goodies only makes it better. Ya gotta try it!

Great small Portuguese bakery. Apple turn overs came in fresh out of the oven. My mouth is watering just writing this review. Oh my god!!! Really helpful and kind staff! Definitely coming here again!!!

As soon as I walked in for the first time, I got so excited, because there was so much to choose from! My favorites were the egg tarts they sell. And everything is so inexpensive. I got about 5 pastries for like $ 7. I will definitely be coming back! I had came at the perfect time because it was empty. As I was leaving, all these people starting coming in! Better to go in the morning.

Silver Star Bakery is one of those friendly little neighborhood bakeries that I happened to stumble upon as I was traversing Ives to get to Tallulah’s. I always see people walking out with a big box of something and so I was curious to find out what was going on over there. I walked in to find an oldish little store with a big display of all things sweet and delicious. You have your cookies, pastries, buns, breads and cakes galore. They have eclairs in all sizes, tiramisu, german chocolate cake… the list keeps going. Not terribly expensive. I’d have to say that the tiramisu was my favorite. Eclairs were meh. Plenty of street parking. They only take Mastercard and Visa!

Well hello sweet thing, you’re so warm and soft and I just want to take a bite out of you, what’s that you say? You have friends that are equally delicious and you all want to come home with me? Yeah, I don’t think my run on The Boulevard made up for the damage I did to their case of utter delectable delights and scrumptiousness(that’s s word right?). I am a closet lover of sweet things but they have to be that right amount of sweet… this place is spot-on. I wish I could speak the the exact things I ate but I don’t know how much I can help I can be as I don’t know the names of what I ate: Thing made of white beans and custard tart oh and bread that was sweet. Go there experience it and I promise you won’t be disappointed. Eat well Providence

I can’t fathom how this place is so cheap! Some of the best egg tarts I’ve had for $ 1.50 each? Dangerous! Although they are on the sweet side, the pastry is so flaky, and the caramelized spots on top help balance out the treacly custard. The sweet bread is unbeatable as well for about $ 5 for a loaf that will be bigger than your head! And don’t get me started on the cream horns… Just use your judgment; there are some things in the pastry case that are probably better left behind. For example, the lemon squares look pretty artificial, and I had a traditional Portuguese bean tart that was very… well… bean-y. But overall, Silver Star has a huge selection of fresh, tasty sweets for super low prices. They also have a cute selection of tea and other non-perishable goods on the side of the shop. I can’t wait to come back on a Sunday morning and try their doughnuts!

My husband and I love this place. We live very close by and every time I’m PMSing I send my husband out for one of their magical brownies, but it’s not just the brownies, their napoleon’s, sweet bread, and german chocolate cake are to die for. No other bakery in Providence compares. Heavenly.

I love this little piece of pastry heaven on the East Side! I walked in to a aroma so sweet and a case full of tasty treats. I got a mini pecan pie, a mini milk tart, a lemon square the size of a piece of pie, and some chocolate chip cookies. Overall everything was fresh, flavorful and moist. I was a happy girl!

There’s nothing like a original home-made Portuguese sweet bread after a good(and expensive taco next door). There’s certainly a lot of sweet goodies available, but I’d recommend coming early, as a visit around noon meant that half of their specialty breads have already been sold out. The sweet bread was delicious, not like the generic stuff over the counter at Shaws, Sams, or Stop n Shop, but moist, soft, with a subtle sweetness that you know has been tampered with lots of butter, eggs and oil. The surprise was actually the tiramisu, which was light, cool, and actually very complex in texture and taste; one of the best I’ve had, even in fancy restaurants. I wasn’t a big fan of the fried, glazed, bread-flower thingie, but my brother loved it.

For the price, you really can’t go wrong. I got four baked items – Portuguese sweet bread, a Malassada, a custard tart, and an éclair – for under $ 5. I’m used to paying $ 5PER pastry at Mike’s in the North End of Boston. Of all the baked goods, my favorite had to be the tart. It was sweet but not cloyingly so, and cradled in the most beautiful, buttery-flaky crust. The Malassada was basically a giant, chewy sugar donut, but it was strangely addictive. I’d love to try it fresh out of the oven. A small loaf of sweet bread(not to be confused with cooked thymus gland) would make for an excellent sandwich, but I was happy eating it on its own. The éclair was the only«meh» item of the bunch, so I think I’ll stick with the Portuguese items from now on. The bakery was absolutely dead when I rolled in around 1pm on a Sunday, but the friendly woman at the front desk said the line for bread in the morning goes out the door. A little hard to believe, but the bread is absolutely worth it!
